Written by the company

Birch & Light is a parenting platform for families raising emotionally intense and neurodivergent children, including children with ADHD, anxiety, and demand avoidance. It was created by author Tara Alison on one conviction: there is a beautiful child underneath the behavior, and when a parent can see what is driving a hard moment, the whole household gets calmer. Stories, songs, and shared activities. 32 original stories to read together, each paired with songs, coloring pages, reflection pages, conversation cards, and a parent guide. Nothing is a program a child has to comply with. The Birch & Light Method, the story work at the heart of the platform, is a Mom's Choice Awards Gold recipient. LightMap. A progressive web app for parents. Log a hard moment and LightMap reads it alongside everything else you have logged to show what may be underneath and what to try next. Insights, school-ready IEP and 504 reports, and customized support help parents speak up with teachers, doctors, and therapists. Foundations. An 8-module video course for parents on understanding behavior, steadying yourself first, co-regulation, and working with schools and providers. Workbooks and articles. Practical workbooks for children ages 6 to 12 and teens ages 13 to 17, plus a library of parent articles on meltdowns, school, sleep, sensory needs, and the medical causes that can sit behind behavior, such as PANS/PANDAS and type 1 diabetes. Parents can also book a free 15 minute LightMap Analysis with Tara at birchandlight.com.

LightMap logging explained what was happening

It showed me what comes before. In the moment, all you see is the explosion. Logging a hard moment takes about a minute: what happened, where, who was there, what came after, what helped. I logged twice a day for seven days, a hard moment, a bright spot or a context note, and the Insights tab started telling me what may be underneath and what to try next. Some of it I didn’t already know. It keeps sharpening the longer you log, because the same moment shows up across days, and so does whatever happened in front of it.

Title: It changed how I respond.

I’m more patient now, and I see my children as people doing their best. One story reminded me to keep my own temper in check. I even stopped a habit I didn’t know was making meltdowns worse, and the next one didn’t spiral.

Changed how I see meltdowns

Birch & Light helped me realize I used to read a meltdown as a verdict. Defiance. Manipulation. A limit I didn’t hold hard enough, or something I did wrong at 4:15. It felt personal because it kept happening at the same doors: leaving, screens off, the first bite of dinner. Now I read it as information. A meltdown is a nervous system that ran out of room, and the behavior is the last thing that happens, not the first.

It’s not defiance

I used to read my child’s meltdowns as defiance. These stories showed me a child trying to calm an overwhelming world, or grieving the end of a good day. It changed how I see what’s behind the behavior.

Title: Logging shows the pattern

LightMap lets me log my child’s behaviors and follow the patterns. I used it for two weeks and caught things I was doing without realizing it. Seeing the triggers is what finally gave me strategies to try.

A beautiful

A beautiful, heartfelt story.
These stories are heartfelt, compassionate and sweet, and they stayed with me after I finished. They put big feelings into words my child can follow. The songs, podcast and parent guide make each one feel like more than a book.

It hit home emotionally

I got a little choked up reading these. Some of it felt therapeutic, and some of it felt like my own life. My child even stopped everything to listen to a song and smiled.

Amazing Insights

Amazing tool that gives me insights that I didn't think were possible. It doesn't just help me understand my child, it helps me understand the root causes and how I can appropriately respond and deal with it myself. We use it in a daily basis and it's been immensely helpful.
