A failing company. In the past Black and Lizars were the gold standard. Over the last 10 years or so their service has declined. The good opticians have mostly left leaving a skeletal service. Appo... See more

More chance of being abducted by aliens…

More chance of being abducted by aliens than getting an appt at Fenwick Road,Giffnock branch in Glasgow - repeatedly get told that their new appointments are not yet open -very strange!! I phoned every day for 2 weeks - they can’t make appt for me, an existing customer Customer service appalling- unable to make an appointment no way to run a business - well B&L guess what …there are plenty other opticians to choose from and I will be sure to tell my friends and if you treat customers like this then pretty soon you will not be in business anymore

No one answers the phone

No one answers the phone. Held on for five minutes listening to the usual “your call is important to us” tosh. Finally told “sorry we cannot answer just now”. I wished to cancel replacement lenses. Easier to just pay £165. Will never go back after being a customer for 20 years.

Blacks and Lizars Gordon Street

Blacks and Lizars Gordon Street, Glasgow. Had an emergency repair with my glasses and the ladies in store sorted and fixed them with no hassle at all. Excellent service from two lovely ladies.

Horrific

I cannot stress enough how degrading a workplace Black & Lizars has become. At one point a family run business with a clear message: to provide the best healthcare possible. Now? A sad excuse of the empire of eyecare it once amassed. The company lacks any form of real structure and management, with the owner of the company being delusional and unrealistic in his aims for the business. There is no money to be put into the business in terms of marketing and little investment in the staff in terms of progression. The HR manager especially runs on zero empathy for the staff and is so clearly in the wrong profession. I, along with many others, was made redundant within the last 2 years as a desperate attempt at limiting company costs. Just this year this company, after selling half of its business, was still not able to afford its own staff - a worrying prospect. I suggest staying clear of this company if you don't want to spend your every day wondering if it'll be your last. They are unwilling to learn and unwilling to invest (in anything). You will see from the state of their social media campaigns just how behind the times they are, yet they promote themselves as being ahead of the times with the machinery they can offer. This is one of their only ploys to grab new custom and gain optometry staff, but please ensure that once you gained employment here, the end result will likely be you hating job you once loved.

Completely wrong prescription

Ignored me when I said I was able to see better without my glasses than with them. Went to a private optometrist and was issued a completely different prescription which is much better.

Excellent clinical service

Excellent clinical service. Suggest shopping elsewhere for frames and lenses. You can pay £120 on top of the frame price for the basic varifocals that specsavers, Asda and others do for free.

Trotters Edinburgh 1st Class

I contacted Trotters Edinburgh, who are part of Black and Lizars Group, to ask for my optical info prior to eye surgery in 2003! Yes, 15 years ago! They went out of their way to find a paper record and get me the info I need for my current surgeon.
Couldn't have asked for a better service - very courteous and helpful. Responded within minutes.
Thank you Neil.
Greatly appreciated.

I wisnae Scottish enough

Arrived on time for my appointment. Receptionist was on phone and didn't even acknowledge that she'd seen me come in. Staff were floating about but took their time to approach me. I waited a while to be seen but the optician was lovely which helped! When it came to choosing glasses i specified the colour of frame i wanted and why. The assistant had the audacity to then question my nationality as i didn't fit his ideal of what being Scottish looked or sounded like :(

Hidden charges if you dont sign direct debit

For some reason, this company (Paisley, New St Branch) are desperate to sign people up for a monthly direct debit for contact lenses.

I tried a month ago to get lenses from this company but due to a different set of issues with their direct debit policy I waited. I returned today to buy the £65, 3 month supply of lenses that I was already fitted for.

At the checkout the girl explained the benefits of joining their Direct Debit Scheme, she quoted me the price of my lenses, £64.99, the same as they were a month ago. I decided not to go with this Direct Debit scheme as there are no real advantages for me as I was buying my lenses.

Suddenly the cost of my lenses jumped £25.00 to from £64.99 to £89.99.

This is a scam and these robbers should be avoided. Beware!!!
