Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 130 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Reviewers frequently complained about receiving persistent demands and notices regarding account balances that they believed had already been settled or belonged to other accounts. Many people also struggled to reach customer support teams, often encountering extremely rude communication, automated dead ends, and entirely unhelpful responses when attempting to resolve their complex disputes. Some reviewers were happy with the assistance they received from certain staff members during their interactions. Customers noted that specific representatives were understanding, polite, and genuinely helpful when organizing straightforward payment plans for those facing financial difficulties.

Six years of pursuing an irresponsibly granted debt — then a FOS determination proved it

Following a FOS determination (upheld, resolved and closed in my favour), BW Legal's handling of the mandatory credit file removal was nothing short of appalling:

Their complaints team told me in a live chat that FOS had not provided an outcome, when the case had been closed for 11 days.

Their own portal, limited to 200 characters which is likely BW Illegal in itself, simultaneously showed the account on a 20-day administrative hold until 31 March, directly contradicting this position.

They sent debt advice links three times after being explicitly asked not to — to someone who had just won a regulatory complaint about irresponsible lending. The irony was, as I told them, rocket-grade off the scale.

They cited irrelevant case law as a smokescreen. They refused to engage with a single substantive technical point raised. They claimed 4-8 weeks was required for credit file removal, a position demolished when I explained AUD mechanisms and direct furnisher portals to their complaints team. The out-of-cycle deletion was eventually submitted the same day I escalated to the director.

An absolute shower of utter incompetence. But I won. You didn't.

BW Legal — worse liars than politicians.

Disgrace of a company

Disgrace of a company! Chasing and threatening for payment for a parking fine from CPMS (also scammers) back in July in my own apartment building! I have since moved abroad and informed BW legal of this via email, no acknowledgment just more threats and now a court case but sent to my old uk address. Now I’m having to spend hours on the phone to try get the court to send me the court case letter via email! £100 “fine” now escalated to £245 I refuse to pay. Defending myself till I’m blue in the face. Reporting this awful company.

dont trust them, they are trying to add a second collection fee when it is already covered in the original collection fee. they don't mention this until you start paying and then say that because you are paying you can not dispute. disgusting tactics and i would dispute it

Patronising and unhelpful

Terrible customer service - rude, patronising and must have a word limit they need to reach each day which would explain why they constantly talk over you.

The service is very poor

The service is very poor. I pay £100 a month, and sometimes even almost £200. This isn't enough for them, and they demand payment of the entire amount immediately, harassing me. I've filed a complaint, and if they continue, I will contact the Energy Ombudsman and Ofgem, as this is against the law.

Incompetent cowboys.

Had two threatening letters forwarded to me today from bwlegal, stating we owed over £1000 to British Gas for outstanding balance from 2 years ago!! The truth of the matter is actually my solicitor confirmed to me last year that British gas owed me around £600. This was eventually paid by British Gas after numerous requests. So to receive these letters now is quite frankly both utterly incompetent and in my opinion harassment. I wouldn't suggest anyone employs this firm as clearly the detail or facts are not important to them....which when you are dealing with legal matters is fairly fundamental I would say. Avoid at all costs and call them out publicly.

Not interested in the truth, just want your money

I have two communications with this company about a parking fine. They are generally not interested in listening to your point and resolving any issue. Just want your money. Their client should remove their business unless they are coining it in.

Liars and dishonest,

Had to report this company to police and engage a solicitor to deal with these crooks.
They are constantly hassling me for debt in someone else's name and a property 120 miles from where I live.
Missattribution it's called, trying to obtain money by fraudulent action.
I taking them to court for damages and stress caused

Flabbergasted.....

Flabbergasted.....

Context: I am being chased for a debt in error (by the way, shock horror BW Legal.... errors happen!!)

IMO You simply should not chase someone for a debt if you don't have all the correct and comprehensive contextual information, you should go back to the originator of the debt FIRST and build a solid case before you send any letters trying to 'trick' people into payment with a 20% discount. I say trick because I'm sure many vulnerable people do pay without a fight out of fear.

The level of shear stubbornness (bordering on aggression) I encountered via their call center was just shocking. The call handlers was sticking to a very narrow set of reasons why I was liable and didn't listen to any logic outside of that narrow framing.

The electricity company who send the debt to BW legal has since admitted the bill was a system error and has cancelled the bill, so we are not dealing with any grey areas in this review.

I feel sorry for anybody having to deal with this company, who frankly need to learn a little bit of humbleness and humanity. They are no doubt dealing with a lot of 1) vulnerable people , 2) errors, 3)frustrated people with frayed tempers....

BW Legal, you should think about how you operate and your processes carefully. I have added my case reference number to this review.

Would rather have given zero stars…

Would rather have given zero stars because this company does not even deserve one star. These roaches are bottom feeders that try to scare and intimidate people into paying debts they are not liable for. Fight them all the way. This company even lost a court case against Trustpilot. If dealing with them in relation to a private parking company then speak to their former employee Jackons Yamba of Contestor Legal, whom they have also recently lost a big legal against after he sued them for harassment.

Best way to deal with them is write muptiple complaints to the FCA SRA etc asking that they are investigated for unprofessional malpractice.
Report to the police if harassment.
Keep reporting them if you think the response is not enough.

Shame on you BW Legal

I hope reviews have a zero rating option then I could have used it for this company.
Absolute trash! I cant iagine they can operate like this, harrassing people over debts that never existed! Shame on you British Gas! I apparemtly still owe Britisg Gas from my previous tenancy though I fully paid all the energy bills before I left. and how did they know my new address to send all the harrassing demand letters
I did sent a letter to BW today and enclosed an email from BG that states that I do not owe them money! If ever I still receive any letter again from BW im going to take this up with the police.
