I hired a car at Wroclaw Aiport at easter 2026.

I forgot my credit card and a debit card would not be accepted. I had to pay 900PLN for an insurance policy which then made my debit card fine somehow. I had to sign all the documents at the office before seeing the car.
The fuel tank was not full, which was noted by Carfree representative. He stated that he would put a note on the system and to take the photo of the fuel gage (which I did) and to returnm the car with roughly the same amount of fuel later.
When I drove to the airport, I had to use the wind screen wipers - there was no wiper fluid (the documents I had signed stated it was full, same as fuel).
I informed the representative of this when returning the car, and showed him the photo of the fuel gage. This was all acknowledged, we inspected the car together and there were no further questions, I asked if that was all, and it was confirmed.

A few weeks later, I get contacted by my bank as CarFree are trying to take money from my acocunt and this is flagged as scam! A day or so later I get an invoice to pay for breaking the car hire agreement by not retuning the car with a full fuel tank. I emailed CarFree explaining the circumstances. There has been no response, but a few days later I got an email from a debt collecting agency. The case is still open, I had no response from CarFree. I did not break any agreement and yet I am chased and threatened by a debt collecting agency.

Important warning for foreign customers: this company did not accept my credit card because it did not show my full first name and surname on the card (only initial + surname). Because of this, I was forced to purchase their full insurance package, which significantly increased the final price.

Overall, the service and customer experience were average. Communication and the car return process felt somewhat unprofessional at times. On the positive side, the car itself was new, clean, and worked perfectly during the trip.

They required an "embossed" creditcard for the deposit, and said that this was non-negotiable. It didn't matter that I had a passport in the same name, other cards etc. They then coerced me into paying for the full insurance, which cost more than the car rental itself and I was allowed to pay with the beforementioned, unembossed credit card!? As if a full insurance on the car can act as legal ID authentication. An absolute scam. The employee behind the counter was completely rigid and had 0 authority. I requested to speak with his supervisor, but that wasn't possible either. An all together horrendous experience. If you want to rent a car in Krakow airport, steer clear of this company.

A car rental that was supposed to cost me around $300 ended up costing more than $1500 (!!!). I was charged around 5000 PLN even though the car was returned without any damage at all. In addition, I was told in advance that returning the car to a different city would cost 299 PLN, but in reality I was charged much more. Also, the “full insurance” I paid for through Discover Cars turned out not to actually be full coverage with the rental company. It honestly feels like they try to squeeze as much money as possible from customers in every possible way. Very disappointing service and complete lack of transparency — I strongly recommend being careful and staying away from this company.

Poor customer service, not sure why I submit a detailed form online just to be asked the exact same details in person, refusing a card that was completely fine to book with, saying the same card would be fine "if I come back 3 hours later" (no explanation as to why 3 hours would suddenly make my payment card ok?).

One person working the desk while the other 3 chit chat among themselves with a queue of people waiting to be served.

Avoid.

The car was an excellent Hybrid and both pickup and and drop off were very straightforward and eaay. A good price too!

In Szczecin/Poland when Carfree agent authorizing my caution for Toyota C-HR, he charged my Canadian MasterCard for 5000 zł, and a few days after car was returned he charged my MasterCard again for the second driver without my consent. When you are dealing with such rental company, remember you should always take "caution" to avoid scams, overcharges, and unauthorized recurring payments...!

This was my 5th time with those guys, ranging between 2 and 5 weeks of rental periods, 3 different classes of vehicles and different weather seasons. All of the cars were practically brand new, clean and comfortable (from small crossover to a 7 seater)
Easy pick up, no delays...just easy and strss free.
Always offered help with pairing your devices to the car, explained all the functions, fullest possible lvl of insurances available, no limits to crossing borders (except to the east now because of the war in Ukraine) Always on good tires (depending on the season) ....

My experience with CarFree in Kraków was disappointing and stressful. Despite already having full insurance coverage through Ryanair (provided by AXA), we were forced to purchase additional insurance from the rental company. The reason given was that the credit card did not display my full name, which felt like an unreasonable and unnecessary requirement.

What made the situation even more frustrating was the inconsistency: although my credit card was considered unacceptable for validating the AXA insurance, the same card was accepted without any issue when paying for CarFree’s own insurance. This contradiction gave the impression that the requirement was selectively enforced.

This resulted in unexpected extra costs and raised concerns about transparency and fairness.

Looking more broadly, CarFree generally has strong overall ratings (around 4.5–4.6/5 on platforms like Trustpilot), with many customers praising the staff, clean vehicles, and smooth rental process. However, there is a clear pattern in negative reviews that matches our experience. Several customers report:

* Being required to buy additional insurance, even when they already had third-party coverage
* Issues with credit card requirements (e.g., name format, non-embossed cards)
* Unexpected extra charges or conditions not clearly explained upfront

Conclusion:
While CarFree can provide good service and well-maintained cars, their policies regarding insurance and payment conditions can be rigid and, at times, inconsistently applied. Customers should carefully review all terms in advance and be aware that additional charges may arise—even when they already have valid insurance.

Very good and friendly service. After booking your car, someone calls to confirm all the details, and you can ask any questions you may have. The main reason I chose this company was that they do not require any deposit and offer flexible insurance packages. I also really like the option to return the car to any branch, which makes the whole experience even more convenient.

Terrible experience. $1200 deposit not returned and later hit with a $400 damage charge with no clear evidence or proper inspection report. Felt completely unfair and not transparent at all. Disputing through my bank.
