Beware.
Beware.
Quite the worst company to deal with I have ever known. hey have arbitrarily decided to change their email system from the a system I have used for around 30 years meaning that I can no longer use my current email app. I have spoken to them and all they have to say is "tough, find someone local to you and pay them to transfer everything for you".
They change their customers email and refuse to taker ANY responsibility for the ensuing chaos.
Dreadful, quite dreadful, avoid Claranet at all costs.
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY
These people have to be the worst customer service in the IT world. As a company they left us without broadband for several days whilst blaming BT. BT were the ones (on this occasion) to provide us good service by finding the cause and highlighting the remedy. Claranet have dragged their feet. The response to our subequent complaints have been non-existant. If anyone would like details of our experience of this awful company please let me know. I am the managing partner at T Cards Direct.
Inept service provider
Inept service provider. Sales line - cuts out after a couple of rings. Tech line- monkeys read from a script. No actual knowledge to be found there. Payment team - can't even find the invoices, let alone advise on what's on the bill!
Email system a shambles and recently blocked by all gmail account recipients as the security is so low, it shows as high risk. But of course it's up the the customer to work out how to get around the issue. Good bye and good riddance.
I have also been with Clara for a long…
I have also been with Clara for a long time and I am also thinking of going elsewhere, our small company also had Clara as a broadband supplier which we have changed to another provider. They also kept taking the monthly payment out, when I managed to get through to the support they asked me if I had contacted the discontinue account Dept. which I hadn’t as I was told by the new provider it would be automatic which it was from the provider point of view but not the Clara accounts, so anyone who switches bear that in mind that you have to inform the right dept.
I am also disappointed as I’ve also found the support very good. I think Clara have done their homework and found that about £10 a month is about average with most hosts so are banking on why switch for a couple of quid.
Avoid
Once again Claranet swallows yet another hosting firm (Union Solutions) because they have none of their own growth and have customers leaving right, left and center.
Appallingly slow and terrible comms. Shadow of the company they recently merged with. Avoid.

Very poor service and response to questions. I have given two 0 recommendations that have not been responded to. They are not understanding the challenges of dealing with people with dementia. Responses are automated without any thought to the individual.
Claranet are a rip-off
We have been with Claranet since July 2003. We had an email last week telling us that out bill was going up from £36 to £120. This is outrageous. Clearly, they know they will lose some custom, but I would imagine the majority won't feel comfortable swapping to another supplier so they will end up with a raft of unhappy customers and a load of extra money. But, as is always the case, their bosses will pick up bonuses for the short term profit increases and by the time the whole thing falls apart, the bosses will have taken their bonuses and be off. Mostly, I feel sorry for the support people who have always been excellent.
They still take my money after I move out
I move out from clara.net since April 2020, but they still keep taking my money from my cardit card in June 2020. I try to call them more than 10 times and nobody pick the phone. I also e-mail them many times, but no reply.
Our small company have also been with…
Our small company have also been with Claranet for over 20 years.
I agree that the recent price hike, from our basic package to Silver, was rather huge for no more value.
My 2 main issues with Claranet however is firstly: they have not yet upgraded to the current PHP version on our shared server; hence my Wordpress cannot upgrade and is stuck on an older insecure version, and half the plugins I use are not available for the outdated PHP version either - and crash our whole site when trying to update. When I called I was told that they had planned to upgrade the PHP in 2-3 months, but due to COVID it will be more like 6 months from now.
Secondly, it is not possible to get an SSL Certificate and hence https installation on a shared server, even on the new rather expensive package - no time scale for implementing this.
This is just not good enough - looks like a deliberate policy to get rid of smaller customers, so we are now looking elsewhere.
Utterly arbitrary and massive price…
Arbitrary and massive price increases for the same service and very hard to get anyone to talk to about it. No reward for loyalty and I suspect they hope most people won't notice and will be stung with a massive bill. Poor and I hope they get what they deserve
Terrible customer loyalty
I agree with all the 1 star reviewers terrible money grabbing conduct by this company. I also phoned support but it's either take it or leave it. So its a case of after 20 years **** you .Wish I could give no stars
Been with Claranet since before 2009
Been with Claranet since before 2009. Just been notified with 30 days notice that cost of renewing my package has jumped from £36/year to £120/year. Phoned support but it's either pay or leave.
Another long term customer of Clara…
Another long term customer of Clara (the best part of 20 years) and facing a price hike from £36 to £120 for nothing I require so I have no choice but to move my domain.
Absolutely appalling, they clearly no longer want home users and plan to scam the ones they have. This comes with 4 weeks notice and an email that is vague on everything except the price and that they will "transfer" you to the account level "they think" best. Trust them NOT!
But if this is the way they treat long term, loyal customers business users should beware!
Absolutely disgusting
I agree with many of the reviewers. I tried to change the ‘package’ from the one Claranet decided I should have (silver) to bronze but I was only allowed the option of gold. As a result my annual subscription has risen from 139.75 for 2019 to £300 +VAT for 2020 and there is nothing I can do about it. I think this is an absolute scam and this will be the last time I shall subscribe with these people.
Like the rest
Like the rest; I have 3 domains with Claranet, been with them for nearly 20 years, from £36 to £120 a year :(
I can’t see any justification for this, I'm now changing to another provider, bad move to make this much of an increase,
Big bonus for the CEO & then going bust maybe ?
560% price hike in renewal £££
560% increase on last years prices £££. An email with 30 days notice informing of the absurd price hikes! Surprise, surprise... Claranet Soho want 30 days notice to leave in their T&C’s.
Modern day ‘shake down’ of loyal customers. Been with Claranet Soho hosting for 18 years and would recommend the company and the customer services to everybody. What shambolic fall from grace, quite simply shocking. Don’t bother with customer service, it’s non existent. Who’s ground breaking business strategy is this?
If you’re in the same boat as me with a little business and website and need to rid yourself of the dreadful Claranet, jump ship as soon as you can. I found a solution with Host Presto if it helps anyone, not affiliated with them but it may help someone if you’re in this mess left by Claranet. For less than a fiver a month, I am sorted & up and running within hours.
I have just spoken to Service Support…
I have just spoken to Service Support regarding the renewal of my account as I thought they had made a mistake sending me an invoice for £122.00 as my renewal last year was £33.00 but no.
This is appalling behaviour. I have been with Claranet for over 15 years and this is how they treat their loyal customers.
Unjustifiable and Unexplained Price…
Unjustifiable and Unexplained Price Increase
I have been with ClaraNet since 2003 happily paying them a slowly increasing charge for the lite package. So the email saying we are introducing a Bronze package and a reshaping didn't alarm me. It should have. My annual price went up from £36 to £136, even though the email said £120 on renewal day. Oh yes they forgot the new £14 a year domain renewal charge. To be fair they did swap me to a monthly package on request so that I can switch but omitted to say there was an additional charge for monthly. And then of course to add insult to injury there has been another outage all day today, 19 September. Having said all of the above I am not sure what the current market rates are so it may just be very poor communications on their part.
Absolutely appalling behaviour
Absolutely appalling behaviour. Had been a loyal customer for two decades (staring with Dircon, then Netscaliber then the current Claranet Soho). Recently got emails saying your account was due and that they would reassign to new bronze, silver or gold levels which they felt most appropriate. Nowhere did they put the ALARMING and totally unjustified price increases in the email - still you could be charged. If you wanted to find out you could go dig them out on their website - or you could call their customer service which used to be so good - but they now get the level of personnel able to swallow what must be at least close to criminal behaviours. Unless you like to be abused I would now stay away from this group. I've walked and so glad that I got my freedom in seemingly the nick of time.
That experience not confirmed
That experience not confirmed. I was told quite firmly this morning that it's a new decision to withdraw the Basic web-hosting package, and your only options are the 400% cost 'upgrade' or to pull out.
I suspect the marketing pointyhead who decided on this will be seeing a fair bit of flack soon
