CPAP Victoria uses spyware in its Resmed machine
CPAP Victoria sold me a Resmed CPAP machine in March 2026. I was not told that the machine has inbuilt spyware that allows CPAP Victoria to monitor your use of the machine, and the parameters that occur, including use of the machine, pressures and level of air seal. I discovered this when I called the store with a problem, and the salesperson told me what she saw on my machine via the spyware. This conduct is a serious breach of privacy, which occurred without my knowledge or consent.
In response to CPAP Victoria's reply to my review:
1. Spyware is spying software, which is software on a device that sends personal, private information to another party without the knowledge or consent of the person who owns the device. This is what the ResMed machine has.
2. I did not allege that the machine reported anything other than the use of the machine, the parameters that occur, including use of the machine, pressures and level of air seal. I did not allege that conversations, location data or any other information was sent to CPAP Victoria. The information taken by CPAP Victoria was my private health information, and it was taken without my knowledge or consent.
3. I was not told at any time during the purchase process that the spyware was on the machine. It is not a case of not being told 'clearly'. Further, there is no reference to the spyware in any documentation with which I was provided, or on CPAP Victoria or ResMed's websites.
4. While I was told, subsequent to my discovery of the existence of the spyware, that the spyware had been disabled by CPAP Victoria, I assume that CPAP Victoria can enable the spyware at any time. That is, the use of the spyware remains in CPAP Victoria's, and not my, control.
5. If I had known of the existence of the spyware, I would not have bought the ResMed CPAP machine.
6. The use of this spyware without my knowledge or consent is a clear breach of the Australian Privacy Principles.

Compatible ResMed devices have a secure remote therapy management feature that allows authorised healthcare providers to access therapy data, such as usage hours, mask seal and therapy pressures to help support your treatment and troubleshoot any issues if assistance is required. This feature does not provide access to personal conversations, location information or any other content outside of your CPAP therapy data. We have switched this feature off on your device.
