Don't be fooled by the polished website…BAD RENTAL
Don't be fooled by the polished website — booked one car, given an unsafe old one
I rented from MYTHOS Car Rentals (creterentcar.com) for a Heraklion Airport pickup in July 2026 and paid €357 for 7 days. I reserved a Seat Ibiza; what was waiting for me was a first-generation Hyundai i30, roughly 15+ years old and heavily worn — it creaked constantly and felt genuinely unsafe to drive. When I pointed out it wasn't the car I booked, the agent brushed it off with a con-like "this one's better, take it or leave it" attitude. Tired after travelling, I gave in — my mistake, and the reason I'm writing this.
Two more red flags. The car was handed over with an empty fuel tank — a classic scheme, because it's nearly impossible to return a car truly empty without risking running dry, so you end up handing back free fuel. A fair company gives you the car with a reasonable amount and asks for the same back. And the slick, professional website is simply not what shows up when they meet you.
My advice to every traveller: you hold the power at that handover. Push back, insist on the car and condition you're comfortable with, and if it's not right, decline and walk — there are dozens of rental firms in Crete. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE GOOD-LOOKING SITE. I would not book here again.
