I recently ordered three pieces of decking from Cut Price Timber to replace damaged boards. The staff were polite, responsive, helpful, and able to deliver quickly. When I sent photos of my existing decking via Facebook — including sizes and measurements — and specifically asked about the thickness and profile, I was assured it was the same, so I placed the order.

When the boards arrived (after the driver had left), it was clear they were not the same profile. This was especially frustrating, as I had provided detailed pictures and asked directly. If I had simply been told they were only “similar” rather than identical, I could have made an informed choice before ordering.

The situation was made worse by the returns policy. I had already paid for delivery, but to send them back I would also have had to pay for collection. If I then ordered replacement boards, that would mean paying for delivery yet again — three charges in total just to try and get the correct product. Either way, I was going to be out of pocket, so I had no choice but to make do with what I received.

It’s a real shame, because the service and communication were otherwise excellent, but the inaccurate advice and inflexible returns policy left me disappointed. Being upfront about product differences and offering a fairer approach to refunds and deliveries would make a big difference for all customers.

Literally wouldn't go anywhere else for wood. I know the timber quality is great, and nobody here will try to sell me anything I don't need. The advice is always good and the service is very friendly. They impress me every time I go there.

I was then contacted by Alan from Cut Price Timber to make sure everything was o.k. and to arrange delivery of goods.

Brilliant service, I took a photo of a garden BBQ hut I want to build and Cameron discussed my goals and helped me process it up and offered so many different wood options. Took his time to explain why he recommended each piece. Totally recommend

Excellent service from start to finish.
I bought roofing felt, timber and clout nails, and was surprised at the low cost, I had shopped around. All the staff were very friendly and helpful, and a special mention to Kieran who also sourced roofing felt adhesive at several stores, finding the cheapest and even checking the stock levels!
I wouldn't hesitate recommending Cut Price Timber, so good having it in Tranent where I live.
