Dark Matter Audio Labs was born from the desire of 2 guys who came together with one common goal. That goal is to produce the best custom fit IEM the world has ever seen. Tal Kocen has 25 years in the live sound industry touring as an audio engineer with both national and international artists that span the globe. He also brings to the table a decade of experience building and managing multiple other companies that have developed everything from custom leather earpads for the world’s best headphones to leading product development from start to finish for no less than 18 different IEM models and hearing protection devices. Tal knows this business inside and out. Dave Friesema is a lifelong hi-fi enthusiast and guitar player. He has 20 years R&D experience in the audio industry and has spent the majority of those years designing custom and universal IEMs, hearing protection, as well as other products centered around hearing better.As Technical Director for the Etymotic and Westone Audio brands, Dave worked on all phases of product design. From concept, to prototype, to production tooling and overall project planning, he has extensive experience in all aspects of earphone design. Additionally, he is one of the founders of Function F(X) and continues to design and build guitar pedals for touring musicians all over the world.

Dave of Dark Matter Audio Labs has been very helpful, responsive to e-mails & questions and informative at every step of the process from which ciems to go with based on use case to getting the right kind of ear impressions for comfortably snug fit. Rachelle has also been thoroughly accommodating with thoughtful care regarding my recent ciem refit service.
For an entry level set from its ciem line-up, my DM2H ciems (paired in rotation with Astell & Kern SR35 and Sony NW-ZX707) are very well built with a natural kind of tonality, all-around solid performance and overall a pleasant sounding set with enough details and sense of space, well-tuned lows to highs, just enough tonal weight and stage, fairly large presence in note size and smooth-spacious imaging of rendered subjects and instruments.
