Information provided by various external sources

Dillenger began in 2007 when the founders of a small Aussie-based engineering firm were looking to build a custom bike frame made from an intricate arrangement of stainless steel rods. This seemly ‘run-of-the-mill’ hobby project led to the intriguing thought – ‘should we motorize this thing?’ Being engineers, the temptation to motorize anything was just too much to bear. This prototype vintage space frame chassis electric bike proved to be a bit of a hit and the company was asked to produce a few models locally for existing clients. One thing led to another and before long, this engineering firm was obsessed with everything electric bike related. Later in 2007, Dillenger Pty Ltd was registered as a company in Queensland, Australia. The following years led to steady, conservative growth, selling limited models locally in Queensland, Australia. Sales often took a back seat to the development of new, better-engineered models. This strategy limited Dillenger’s growth early on, but also meant that production models developed quickly and became the most reliable in a market of otherwise notoriously unreliable products. New technology in batteries, brushless motors and intelligent motor controllers led to huge improvements in the quality and reliability of electric bikes from 2008 to 2010. Even more recently, the reduction in the cost of basic electric bike components has led to the explosion the e-bike market around the world. With the reduction in cost and increase in the size of the market, there has been a flood of startups importing cheap knock-offs. Already, many businesses seem to come and go, leaving customers in a lurch with no after sales support. Dillenger marks the 7th year of production with the sale of the 10,000th unit since 2007. Dillenger’s market in the last 3 years has exploded. Products are now sold online 24/7, all around the world.

slow poor customer support/ delivered wrong item

Don’t use this company if you need customer service or after sales support. I ordered a replacement controller after my bike Dillinger kit developed a fault. I checked the with Dillinger support to ensure the correct one before ordering. I had to wait almost 2 weeks after lots of time wasted emailing just to try and establish what had happened to the order , eventually the item was finally dispatched without giving me a tracking number. When it arrived to discover they had sent the wrong one, I informed them immediately but as yet no response and I’m still waiting to hear from customer support how they can replace this. I have spent about £100 for an item that is totally useless to me .
I will avoid using this company in the future , expensive, unreliable, no way to contact them except through their unresponsive / slow email.
Better to use amazon or ebay sellar that have a transparent quick clear delivery & easy return policey

very unhelpful customer service once I did get a reply

I'd done so much research about buying an electric bike, finally decided to but with Dillenger but that was a mistake.
They did not advise when my delivery would arrive therefore I did not accept it - I don't accept packages I do not know what they are. They then told me I would have to pay £135 for redelivery.
This was their mistake not telling me when to expect the parcel.
I tried to arrange collection of the bike from the depot but they cancelled my order, minus the £135.
I will be taking this up with my bank as this was not my fault. They have no proof of giving me a delivery date so this is their responsibility.
Be warned no UK contact number so you can't even call to speak to them and have to wait hours for email response as all based in Australia.
And very unhelpful customer service once I did get a reply.
Certainly wouldn't recommend them which is a shame as i really liked the bike I ordered!

The conversion kit was simple to…

The conversion kit was simple to install, and made my bike super fun to ride. It worked smoothly for a month and then I got 30H error code. The sales and support team were quick to reply and within two weeks I had my replacement part.
I've been riding my bike in winter conditions, to and from work, and after 30km's I still have 2 bars left on my battery. The motor has lots of torque, and the speed that the off road package delivers is noticeably greater than other e-bikes I have ridden.
I've recommended this conversion kits to quite a few of my friends.

Power cut off

I purchased Premium Offroad Electric Bike Kit - 26" Rear × 1 in May 2020. The kit worked well for about 2 years and then the range dropped by half. And now the power cuts off at full throttle. The bike is stored in the garage and charged after every ride. I checked for loose connectors and didn’t find any. So I attribute this to the poor quality cells.

Absolutely superb kit, very pleased!

We ordered 2 Road Kits for our existing Belgian built Oxford bikes and have been absolutely thrilled with them. The kits were fitted by our local bike shop in Poole, Dorset, who recommended we consider Dillenger.

The kit seems to be manufactured to a very high quality and our early experiences are really positive. The kit provides plenty of power and if anything is a little overpowered for our 6 speed bikes, so we’re considering up grading our gear sets to make better use of it. We live in a very hilly area and those hills which would have got me off and pushing are now an easy climb. I do find the power cuts out a bit from time to time, but by adjusting the power level and dropping a gear or two sorts it out. Having not used my bike for almost a year, I’ve cycled 50+ miles in the last week. Just loving it! Great value and very usable electric kit.

I bought the Dillinger 250w street…

I bought the Dillinger 250w street legal Samsung kit. Overall it's excellent and I would recommend the kit to others. The only issue I had, was on my bike, the 2 screws for the drinks bottle were too low to fit the battery there. I already had a back rack, so after some careful research and measuring. I fitted the battery into a BTR pannier bag (the 8 litre one shaped like the battery, Bag Size = Height 13.5cms, Width 16.5cms, Length 36cms ) These bags are excellent quality and this aftermarket fix solved my battery mounting problem. Also the bag protects the battery from rain. I've ebiked 50 miles in two days and it's helped me get cycling again. :)

Cable fittings

I don't know how to remove my previous review.
I apologize for slating your product. It was my fault as l hadn't pushed the motor cable in quite far enough and that was all that was wrong.
To be fair, all the cables are a very tight fit, especially the controller to pedal sensor. Hopefully l won't need to pull that apart many times! Thought the fault was something silly and it was, now pleased with the purchase

Not working

Bought recently a 1000w rear hub kit from Dillinger UK. I can't fathom why it won't work.
So after hours of YouTube video and Facebook ebike groups, it seems l m now understanding that what l see on the display when l turn it on is an error code of 8 h. I ve been told this is a hall sensor issue in the hub motor. If this is true that's a very poor show. How Dillinger respond to this l ve no idea.

Reply from Dillenger Electric Bikes

Hello Mark,

We've been looking into this with you and based on the photos you sent we were able to determine that this error message was caused by a plug not being fully connected.
We're happy to hear that now that the plug has been pushed in more and has been fully connected the kit is working as it should.

When plugs aren't properly pushed in the components aren't able to communicate with each other and you will see an error message like that.

We would appreciate it if you could adjust your review to reflect this outcome.

Kind regards,
Dillenger Team

My Dillenger experience

At 68 years old and after a knee replacement I was still enjoying cycling but i was having a bit of a problem on the uphills. My brother told me about ebikes but I didnt want to replace my 15 yo Learsport hybrid. I investigated conversion kits and settled on the Dillenger street legal roadbike kit. The fact that they are an Australian company helped. After ordering 2 days for delivery and about 1 hour to set up. I had problemswith setting to the PAS but a quick email fixed thus to. Nearly 100km on a full charge is pretty good and I'm enjoying my cycling again.

Street Legal Electric Bike Kit

I ummed and ahhed about parting with cash to buy the conversion kit and, encouraged by online reviews, I bought one for my Bianchi. It is the best purchase I've made online. Without doubt. The whole assembly took an hour and everything fitted where it should. The system works brilliantly and has made the world of difference to my (lack of) ability to ride distances. I generally use the power assist on level 3 out of 9 which gives me a good help up hills but will let me work a bit too. I cannot rate this product highly enough.

I was looking for an ebike but wanted…

I was looking for an ebike but wanted to use my existing bike rather than buy another. The Dillinger front hub kit met all my requirements in terms of specification and cost.
I ordered 2 kits and fitted them to Giant mountain bikes. The kits arrived and were well packed and complete. One was for an 18in frame with battery on the down tube and the other a 13 inch frame with the battery on a rear rack purchased online. Fitting was straightforward and the only areas that required some thought were the location of the PAS sensors and the wiring routes.
The sensors could not be mounted easily because of the thickness of the frame tubes on our bikes and I made small mounting plates of stainless sheet which I attached to the front derailleur mounting bolt. This worked well.
The routing of the cables was easy to determine but the lengths of the cables provided were too generous and resulted in bunched cables around the batteries. I appreciate it is difficult to accomodate all different sizes of frames, so I suppose this is a necessary aspect of a universal fitting kit.
The kits worked first time and are excellent. They have given us the ability to continue cycling and for greater distances than were were achieving before. I can recommend them to anyone.

Premium Offroad Electric Bike Kit

This Conversion Kit has been one of my best purchases of all time. It is a thrill to ride as well as a good project to learn about bikes. The bike is noticeably heavier and FASTER therefore requires more braking power, so it might be good to include recommendations on how to improve breaking power (i bought new break disks). There is also a number of new components that i see as a necessity with the bike outlined here: New thicker back tire, new break discs and depending on the type of cassette you have a new one. These extras Added a total of about $100AUD which i have no complaints about but some more detailed guidance in the instructions would have saved a bit of research time. One last part is some maintenance instructions might be useful such as cleaning and tightening breaks. Overall I absolutely love this bike and highly recommend it to anyone looking into it I use it just about every day. Love it!

Street Legal BBS01 Bafang Middrive

Bought a street legal BBS01 Bafang mid drive kit and installed it myself. Installation was easier than I thought and actually quite enjoyable. Trek hybrid donor bike, I now commute 4 days a week. Love the cruise to work now, keeps me fit without too much exertion. Dillenger and Iris were great with purchase and any questions about install. Best thing I ever did!
