Regret buying DR Power “PRO XLT" tow behind

I ordered a DR Power “PRO XLT Tow-Behind Trimmer” to keep horse fences clear of weeds. It was expensive, just under $2000 with options, but the concept seemed good. It’s a powerful, belt-driven string trimmer with a 9.7 pound-feet torque, ~7 hp gasoline engine and a cutting head with heavy cord. The cutting head is mounted on a spring-loaded swing arm offset to the side of the tow vehicle. The idea is that the swing arm reaches under the fence line then swings around fence posts cutting to “1/2 inch” of the post. But there are problems.
• The first was with “lift gate free delivery” they advertised for this particular machine. When I ordered by phone, they said it couldn’t be delivered to my address because they weren’t sure an 18-wheeler could turn around despite my telling them others had in the past. They also refused to off-load onto the main road about 500 yards away, so I had to travel 25 miles to a freight depot, wait there 40 min for it to be loaded on my truck, and then manage to lift the pallet-mounted machine off back home. Time-consuming nuisance but not the real problem.
Design flaws:
• The machine has a guard that guides the swing arm around fence posts allowing cutting close to posts. The cutting cords reach the guard but as soon as they begin to wear, it cuts less close to the posts so expensive cords must be changed frequently. This means cutting most weeds even with short cords then going back with new cords to get close to posts. This is a time consuming task and a design deficiency.
• The swing arm is on a powerful spring and bangs back so hard after passing a post it seems almost self-damaging. But despite the strong spring, it cuts close approaching a post but not so well moving away even with the tow vehicle travelling less than 2-3 mph. Where I can, I will cut from both sides of a fence to clean both sides of fence posts. Between having to make final cuts from both sides with new cords and the initial cleaning under the fence, that means 3 passes! This is a design deficiency.
• Briggs and Stratten used to supply the engine, but now it’s a DR Power design built in China. The B&S engine had a manual choke, but now it’s automatic as is the throttle and this is not good. If the starter rope is pulled with the engine switch off, the choke will be closed and flood the cylinder. Unlike engines with a manual choke, the choke and throttle can’t be kept open while pulling the starter rope to clear the cylinder. If the mistake of trying to start with the switch off, the machine must sit for hours before it will start. Most small engines have a “kill switch” used only to stop the engine and this problem would not occur with a kill switch rather than a “run switch” as this machine has. When it does start, it runs at full throttle immediately - that’s not good for any engine. These are design deficiencies.
• The tow vehicle I originally planned to use needed a ball hitch, so I ordered one from DR Power. What they sent did not fit the tow arm - it was a hitch for a highway trailer, not a weed cutter. Not only that, they changed $100 plus shipping for what’s available at a local hardware store for ~$35 and Amazon for $25! To their credit, they gave me a full refund including shipping both ways. But again, this was a waste of time and indicates the company did not know what they were doing.
Failure
• The second time I tried to change the cutting cords, the special cutting head spit out a spring and was toast. Despite this being a brand-new machine purchased with a 3-year extended warranty, they require I do the repair using a part they promised to send in 5-7 working days. That was mid-July but today I was told the repair part arrives August 22! Six weeks, not 5 days!
Bottom line:
• I am sorry I bought this machine, but I will continue trying to make it work.

I couldn’t be more satisfied with my DR…

I couldn’t be more satisfied with my DR Pro XL30 17.5 HP brush mower. It performs even better than I expected. I purchased this with the intention to mow my fields as well as fields of a couple of my neighbors once a year. I also purchased the snow blade to clear snow from my driveway and parking area, perfect for these Montana snows. My only complaint is the difficulty getting parts. I’ve had to order a couple of different parts, including a new battery recently and both items were on back order for an extended time. As I stated, the machine is fantastic but it surprised me that parts, especially something as common as a battery, are hard to get in a timely matter. I’m hoping that these incidents were nothing more than anomalies and not something I experience often when a part is needed. I would recommend their equipment to anyone but hoping parts become easier to get in a timely manner.

I own two pieces of DR equipment - TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE

I own two pieces of DR equipment - a walk behind brush mower, and a tow behind brush mower. Have been really happy with them up to recently.

On July 30 I phoned in for parts so that I could get my tow behind mower back up and running. Rainy summer here, lots of grass growth. Told the woman to please expedite because I really need these parts.

I called several times to check on the order. Through prompts was directed to a Dept where I sat on hold time after time for 20 minutes or more with irritating background music. No live person ever answered.

Frustrated, I called back and chose their prompt for "want to purchase a new machine". Guess what - first ring and a guy answers. He is unable to help me, reads off a script about "warehouse issues", and tells me to call the other prompt again. I do. No pick up.

Call the guy back the next day (once again he picks up on the first ring), reads me the same script. Told him I want to speak to his supervisor or the owner. After waiting several minutes another guy gets on the line and reads from the same script. Told me he would have someone call me.

Six hours later a woman calls and leaves a voicemail. This is on Aug 12. I quote,'your order has started to process for shipment yesterday. It still means that it will take to the end of the week to get processed out and then should ship and arrive to you on next week so if you have further questions you can certainly give us a call at ....."

In other words, my order of four simple parts had not even been started yet! Total word salad on her part. And with the frustration of this entire ordeal you would think that DR would OVERNIGHT the parts to me!

I don't know if this company has been bought by private equity or venture capitalists, but it has really gone downhill. At this point I would not purchase a piece of equipment from them, nor advise anyone to. Terrible customer service, but more than ready to answer the phone for a new order.

Still don't have the parts. Grass is now 2 ft high.

I cancelled my order

I cancelled my order, Aug. 13,2025. Spoke with your agent , RAJ, in customer service. I was told that I would get a confirmation number, which I haven't. Order # E003264531 was placed Aug. 04,2025, stating it would be sent in 1-3 business days. Aug. 11 , when I checked on your auto info service, Iwas told thar part of the order was shipped Aug.5th and the mower itself was shipped Aug. 8th. Finally, Aug. 15, 2025, I finally was able to talk to one Raj, who told me of your warehouse problems and that I would not have anything shipped before Aug. 18 or 19th. I can't wait any longer and cancelled my order, and am waiting for my confirmation number. L. Szabo.

DR Mower / Generac junk

DR Mower / Generac junk! In 2023, my wife wanted an easy to use mower. Knowing the reputation of DR, I spent $12,000 on a DR electric zero turn. Big mistake!! It started giving an error message and stopped working so I called tech support. I spoke to multiple support personnel that explained they were not trained in the zero turn and could not help me. They then said nothing was user serviceable and told me I had to take it to Hamilton Equipment to get it worked on (even though I purchased it directly from DR / Generac). It has been in shop 7 weeks! First Hamilton stated they could not get DR service to call them back. Now they state they are waiting on parts. DON’T buy DR / Generac unless you want a lot of pain and not to mow your grass most of the summer! PS: I considered just trading for a gasoline mower. I was offered $500 in trade for the $12,000 mower!
Update: DR / Generac states on their website one may purchase an extended warranty if their factory warranty is still intact. Given the problems I have encountered, I called and stated I wanted to extend the warranty. They stated the extended warranty is not available on that machine! DR / GENERAC JUNK! They won’t even warranty their own machine!

Don’t buy anything with a battery from this company

We have the bush hog and it’s battery operated it’s been over 3 months and still the battery has not been delivered. They said originally 6-7 weeks for the battery to arrive so we were good with that! But, it’s been 3 months and everytime we call someone else speaks To us and says oh it will ship In 2 weeks and it never does they put a pending charge on our credit card and gives us hope and then that drops off so we call again. Now as of 2 days ago you closed our original order and gave us a new order number so your system thinks it’s complete and wanted us to give you a review so here it is. Don’t buy anything electric from this company because they will blame someone else for not having the battery. Also, our yard has to be professionally mowed and that’s what we wanted to do ourselves. So we have a bush hog with no battery makes it worthless. Respectfully submitted The Davis Family

Deceptive Recall Program

The batteries to my self propelled Dr Power line trimmer were recently involved in a recall. I followed their directs to the tee and submitted my request for a voucher along with the requested picture of the batteries marked as defective and the cord to the charger cut. All I received was the run around from their customer service people. Will never buy another of their products.

Poor communication

I ordered the equipment spending $4500 and I don’t even get an email for at least an hour. I waited three days to get an update on shipping and got nothing and I called in and had to wait 28 minutes on hold to get a poor estimate that it will be shipped out later this week

My Experience

I have owned a DR Finish pull behind mower for about 3 years. My service tech told me the electric magnetic clutch needed to be replaced, I ordered the clutch and the customer service woman named Victoria was very helpful and conducted the transaction with the clutch on it's way to my house. The service tech then was able to get the machine into his shop and discovered a broken wire to the clutch. He fixed the wire and the clutch still worked. I contacted DR Mowers and Jennifer arraigned the return with excellent customer service skills. I am impressed with the service that was provided by DR Mowers and completely satisfied. Thank you for your work !!!

Electric start self propelled trimmer mower

The trimmer mower arrived a day early The box was a little damaged, but the contents were fine. Assembly took less than 10 minutes. Instructions were easy to follow.
I am 79 years old, electric starter and self propelled axle make the mower very easy to operate at my age.
