Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 737 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people found the app's user experience frustrating due to repetitive lessons, annoying animations, and a focus on gamification over actual language acquisition. Customers also reported significant technical issues, including constant crashes, freezing, and problems with microphone exercises not picking up sound. There was widespread dissatisfaction with the lack of grammar explanations and the product's inability to effectively teach practical language skills. A significant number of users were unhappy with the subscription model, citing billing discrepancies, difficulty canceling, and unclear free trial terms. Some people also felt that the content was too repetitive, geared towards US English speakers, and contained inappropriate topics for younger audiences. However, some customers did find the app useful for vocabulary practice and appreciated the bite-sized lessons and motivational league system.

Waste of time to be frank

None of its courses have actually taught me anything, despite me using the app for almost an hour a day. Also they sometimes teach you the wrong things. Don’t get me started on the bloody adverts, popping up on my screen after every single lesson I do. It’s ridiculous the new “energy” they’ve introduced- I can only finish about 2 lessons. Super Duolingo is a scam, don’t get it. Got charged 70 quid for it even though it was my free trial. As a Brit I can’t stand the fact that they’re teaching American English for their “English” course instead of actual English. Also pls stop with the gay characters thank you.

The app keeps trying to get my attention all the time to keep me in their system. Either the banner with the widget of this angry green thing or just the fact that it keeps sending me emails notifications just way too much stuff. It's just annoying and on top of that, I had a streak of like almost a year just under by a couple of days and I still feel like I haven't learned shit.

This app constantly freezes

This app constantly freezes. The only way to unfreeze it is to re-start the phone, roughly every three log ons. When it works it is good, I learnt German well and improved my chess, but with the constant re-starting of my phone, I am giving up on it.

I really love this app. It’s really useful and helps you to learn new foreign languages step by step. And also small but cute fact is their owl) it makes you want to open the app more often and take care of it like a tamagotchi ♥️

Good and bad

Firstly, I like that Duolingo makes learning fun. Whenever I try to learn a new language chess or math the UN-duolingo way, it's tedious, boring, and it's definitely not something I look forward to every day. But Duolingo's like; I wanna wake up every morning to do this thing! it's because it has a streak, friend list, family plan, and courses! so good. the thing I don't like is that I think they should start smaller. When you're a beginner just beginning to learn a new language like Spanish, they should start with simple words, then more words, then more words, then complex words, then phrases, then simple sentences, then beginner sentences, then intermediate sentences that are still slightly slow, then challenge sentences that are normal speed Spanish speed, then expert sentences, then you can include fun things like saying multiple sentences, combing phrases, and writing opinion essays on what animal is the best.

appalling site

appalling site. NO customer service whatsoever. If you message them they say What you say is very important to us while at the same time Don't expect a personal answer. I've been trying to change my email address on their site (I reported the change several years ago) for three days and they continue to list my old, non-functioning address. The contempt Duolingo shows its customers is beyond belief. The site glitches out on an almost daily basis, and there is absolutely no way for me to contact them

Been a learner with Duolingo for over 7 years. For the first 5 I was relatively happy with the app, and, to be absolutely fair, it did help me to brush up my French to the stage of feeling confident, being able to enjoy French language tv and get my wants over when on holiday. But boy, over the past two years it’s like the program has been completely handed over to an AI algorithm, there are glitches most days, some of the content is inane and there are Temu type ‘prize’ popups after every challenge. Not much evidence of human involvement on the admin side too. It could be far far better and made to be worth the outlay for the paid subscription. As it is, I think there are far better apps.

They are crooks. thieves and incompetents. Avoid them. I have a paid subscription to the service that I have paid for, which has stopped with no notice, no excuse, and no replies to enquiries to their purported 'support line.
Wow, did they ruin a great service.

Technical glitch

I saw a few videos about how to connect for the test, also took my practice test. On the day of test. I prepared a space where no one can enter until I am done. After all the setup I started click the test. Even though I had app on my desktop I received a message to download the app again. I kept trying for almost an hour or more but to no avail. I kept getting the same message in spite of having the app in my laptop. I ended up without having a test.

I PAID TO LEARN A LANGUAGE, NOT TO PLAY GAMES.

I paid for a full year of Duolingo Super to learn a language. What I have now is something completely different.

The app has been changed to include game-based progression features that were not part of the original service. I SIGNED UP TO LEARN A LANGUAGE, NOT TO PLAY GAMES. These changes now block me from progressing entirely. I’ve lost multiple days of learning because I simply cannot get past these stages.

This is not a minor update or a matter of preference — the core functionality has changed to the point where the app is no longer usable to me for its intended purpose.

What makes this worse is the complete lack of meaningful support. The only response I received was an automated message directing me to Apple for a refund. Apple does not offer partial refunds, and the issue is clearly caused by changes within Duolingo’s own platform.

There is no real attempt to resolve the problem, no accountability, and no way to speak to an actual person.

Charging customers for a service and then changing it into something they cannot use — while offering no practical support — is not acceptable and goes against the law as set out by the Consumers guarantees act of 1993.

I would not recommend this app to anybody.

Solid for starting but gets repetitive after a while

Downloaded Duolingo three different times already. First just for a month, then later for almost half a year straight, doing lessons every single day after work and school run with my son.

The new AI stuff is actually pretty cool, especially the speaking practice and those short video calls, makes it feel more real. Also like the quick lessons when Im in a rush before dinner

The app actually helped me build a proper habit and now its not hard for me to keep doing lessons every day.
I really like the AI phone call simulation, its quite fun, and the dictionary where I can quickly check words.
What I dont like is that it keeps repeating the same stuff forever and doesnt give enough new material. Even though I once managed to do it for 6 months straight and even got top spots in the activity leagues a few times.

Hard to stay motivated

I really wanted this to work, but it didn't. It's already hard to stay consistent and practice every day, and on top of that the app doesn't really explain things clearly.

After a while it just feels repetitive and not very helpful.

Duolingo is not consistent

Duolingo is not consistent. They have changed their format more times than I can count. They say it is new words, but I learned them a year ago. They say you will get triple points the next day and it is so somtimeish/ Honestly I have been trying to learn Italian using Duolingo since 2019 and I am not able to make sentences properly with an understanding of the language cadence etc. I am just disappointed with it. I don't think I will renew my membership again. I will find a better way to learn.

Completely rubbish

I use Duolingo for free, and even the free version is bad. I use it as an extra learning tool, along with my french classes to increase my fluency. But even I know that 'Salut' does not mean bye. I think this is all because of the AI update, and that I am not actually learning anything. Because of this, I am becoming demotivated, and I am taking a break from this thing for a two weeks.

I started using Duolingo through the…Negative experience with automatic renewal and support

I started using Duolingo through the free trial, as I only wanted to test the service. Unfortunately, the annual subscription was automatically renewed without me realizing it, and I did not receive a clear notification that would have allowed me to cancel in time.

I haven’t been using the app recently, and as soon as I noticed the charge, I contacted both Apple and Duolingo support. Unfortunately, neither of them was able to assist me in getting a refund.

I understand the subscription terms, but I believe there should be more flexibility in situations like this, especially when the renewal was unintentional and the service hasn’t been used.

Given my current financial situation, this charge represents a significant expense for me, and I was hoping for a more understanding and supportive response.

Overall, this has been a very disappointing experience, particularly in terms of customer support and how this situation was handled. I expected more from such a well-known platform.
