Got one of these scams on Facebook…

Got one of these scams on Facebook Marketplace! Buyer seemed very interested in my car, very responsive and personable. We had set up a time and a date to meet up, then they said they want this check even though I had already provided free CarFax for them. Did my due diligence with a quick reddit search and saw this was associated with a scam. Told the buyer that I would be happy to pay for the report after they came in person and they flat out refused. This has got scam written all over it,

Wasting YOUR time!

Wasting YOUR time!!

Posing as a buyer on Autotrader etc and wasting seller's time. You want to attract car sellers, not directly p**s them off (That's if you are trying to offer a service and not just scam). Hopefully nobody hands you any money.

Same story as all the reviewers below

Same story as all the reviewers below. Guy called Tyren purporting to want to buy our motorhome advertised on Gumtree. Alarm bells went off when he wouldn't exchange phone numbers. Sounded genuine but the insistence on using Elite check set off some alarm bells, thus checked on here. Yes, it's a SCAM, beware

Scam!!

Scam!!! I have experienced exactly the same as all the other threads below, but this time was emails from Nathan Bellingham asking me to pay for a check on my own car via elite check. I told him no this morning and something tells me he won’t be viewing the car this weekend as previously planned!

This is a scam

This is a scam, just like all others I advertised my car on Gumtree. The next day I received a text from "Erik" (07533818071) who expressed full interest in the car and agreed to pay the asking price.

Then he asked specifically asked for a check through elitecheck.co.uk.

I checked online and there were several other cheaper options. But he insisted that he believes elite check is thorough and authentic in comparison to others. And that he will reimburse me after I send him the report.

I unfortunately fell for it and bought one. Right after that he blocked me on WhatsApp and never responded to any texts.

Beware of this scam. ELITE CHECK.

Absolute scam beware

Absolute scam beware! My motorhome is advertised on gumtree and within 2 mins of listing it I had someone called Teyron texting me offering full asking price, after a few messages back and forth he asked me to have a vehicle check done via elite check which I kindly refused and told him the buyer purchases the check for peace of mind not the seller. He kept insisting to use elite check, I kept saying no, eventually i told him to p*ss off.

Total Scam

This website is nothing but a scam. If you advertise a car for sale on Gumtree, expect a call from someone pretending to be a buyer. They will insist you do a 'check' through this fraudulent company before they proceed with the purchase. When you ask them to pay for the check themselves, they'll lie and claim that the site only allows the seller to pay. It’s painfully obvious that this so-called 'check' site exists solely to con you into handing over your money. They deliver absolutely nothing and are clearly in the business of scamming people. Avoid this site at all costs!"

I have had the same negative experience…

I have had the same negative experience twice recently when I started receiving text messages from someone appearing to be interested in my car that I had for sale. Text messages only and not through Gumtree where the car was advertised. They asked the usual questions and then got down the business of asking me to perform a check on my own car from a company called EliteCheck. I’ve never heard of this check and why would the vehicle owner perform a check on their own car???????? They person then started to get a bit annoyed when I said it is up to a prospective buyer to perform any checks they see fit as they have everything to lose if they buy a car with a chequered past and not the owner of the car. Steer clear of these scammers wanting you to buy a bogus vehicle check saying they will reimburse you for the check. Money lost and another scam to be aware of so if anyone reaches out regarding similar circumstances you have been warned. Do not fall for this scam.

Elite check Fraud?

I placed car ad on Gumtree. Within an hour or so, I started to receive phone calls from a guy (*7476540537) wanting to buy the car, but insisted I get a car check done with elite check. I asked why he couldn't get his own done, it was because he told me they only release these reports to owners!

I told him to use AA or RAC, but he didn't know about those companies only elite check.

Elite check confirmed on their chat line this was the case and is their standard operating procedure. The wouldn't answer my question, why would an owner want to check their own car but not let a buyer do the same thing. That must be 90% of the market? They didn't answer.

Be aware, very aware.
