Terrible experience with Europcar – trying to charge for invisible damage

We rented a car from Europcar for our holiday, and everything seemed fine… until we returned it.

At drop-off, the staff claimed we had scratched one of the wheels. The supposed “damage” was invisible.

We even showed a photo of the alleged damage to another Europcar employee, and they couldn’t identify it either. That says it all.

Of course, the scratch is not visible in the video we took when we picked up the car – the car was wet, like most rental cars often are, making it impossible to notice anything even if there had been something.

This felt like a cheap trick to squeeze money out of tourists. Instead of a smooth end to our trip, we left feeling frustrated and cheated. What should have been a relaxing holiday ended with a bitter taste thanks to Europcar.

Be warned – take detailed photos and videos, and maybe bring a microscope too.

Stay away from awful Europcar

Terrible experience. Went to fetch my hire car in Stansted airport only to find the satnav was in Italien. This was followed by the woman who didn't know how to solve the problem taking the car keys with her, with the engene still running, and not informing me. I drive off and only found the keys were missing approximately 170 miles away on my journey to the south west. I then spent an extremely cold night (11 hours) in a car I could not start whilst I tried in vain to coordinate a pickup from either via the AA or Europcar but was met with total indifference. I missed a hotel booking which I had hoped to stress down with and had to go directly to my brothers funeral. Thanks Europcar. A wonderful experience?

We rented a car ongoingly from Europcar…

We rented a car ongoingly from Europcar in Denmark (monthly subscription). We knew we were going to buy our own car within three months so we specifically told them when we picked up the car that we only needed it for three months (which they confirmed - again, there was no scenario where we would have rented it longer). When we dropped the car off to be within the period of three months, they told us we had committed to 7 months minimum and that we had to pay a penalty fee for returning it too early. I cannot stress enough that we specifically communicated when we rented it, that we only need it for three months, which they said was perfectly fine and that the moment we returned it, all would be well. So… not a happy camper with their services. The car we got was of very poor quality as well.

And to add here, their post services / customer support showed no care or focus for customer satisfaction

Cheating regarding insurance costs

When picking up the Car, i had already paid for insurance. Salesman asked if we wanted the full insurance, and it would only cost 15 GBP, we then asked him 3 times that if he was sure it was only 15 GBP in total and he confirmed this every time - so of course we said yes. But then we paid, and it turned out that the full insurance was 31 GBP per day, so 220 GBP in total, which not what we agreed to and now europcar won’t do anything about it. Really bad customer service and just in it to make an extra sale.

Car wasn’t ready for pick up when we arrived, had to wait 45 minutes.

Only positive thing was the return, very easy and staff so nice.

This is by far the worst car rental…

This is by far the worst car rental company ever. Europcar Hudiksvall.
We booked a car with insurance company, and suddenly they didn't have a car. Waited for hours. And the owner came home from his vacation and seemed angry or drunk. And he just send us away without any explanation.
Stay away from this company. They shouldn't be in this busines.... The owner didn't even want to talk to the main office I Germany who was on the phone with me. They was as supprized as us, that he didn't act according to the company's guidence.
Europcar suffers a very bad review and a promise to never use them again.

After receiving a fine for crossing the Themes by bridge I get an invoice for the fine. All is fair.
But Europcar´s invoice match exactly the fine in question. I pay the invoice within a few days and belive this to be closed.

3 month later I recive a notice from Dart Charge for the same amount again.

I contact Europcar regarding this and get the information that the invoice from them had nothing to do with the fine - it was pure administration on there behalf.

So I have to pay the fine once again.

Europcar never again!
