TOTAL RIP OFF

TOTAL RIP OFF! THIEVES, SCAM - book if you want to pay 2-3x more than expected!

I wish a read reviews before renting a car here as it seems that they scam everyone - READ IF YOU DON`T want to be SCAMMED as well.

I rented a car with EUROPCAR through RentalCars.com in Mexico Cancun from 8.2.2025

When I paid for this rental, I also paid extra insurance (FULL PROTECTION with Rentalcars.com) which should cover everything.

Me and my family (4+7yo kids) arrived to Cancun around 11pm (after about 20hours travel) and we were transported to Europcar.

Everything went well until the guy giving us our car wanted to charge us some nonsense astronomical charges for extra insurance - TWICE the price of the car rental price!

After about 10 minutes persuading him that I already bought insurance and showing him confirmations, he told me that this is not their insurance and that if I insist not taking their own, I will probably have problem to get some money if something happened but ok.

Then he continued - I had to put down refundable deposit (yes of course, I counted with that) - he told me that it will be only 700 USD.
I told him that we are ready to put refundable deposit of 2500 USD (or so as written in Rental Cars description) and he charged us only 700 USD claiming that that`s it.

Then he again told us without any other explanation that he is charging another 538.24 USD as some different kind of insurance. I told him no way and even asked if we can avoid this if I deposited more than 700 USD - he said no that is not possible and this extra insurance is mandatory and he wouldn`t let us leave without it - later I found out that I probably wouldn`t have to pay for this extra insurance if I deposited more - but that wasn`t of course even offered to us.

I argued with him about this rip off but he was literally FORCING me to pay for this. At the end he even told me that it will not be charged, but it will be also a refundable deposit - WHAT a LIE!!!

Exhausted, 2 kids at almost midnight in new country a agreed as he stated it is refundable I paid it.

I was of course charged about 5 days later when I checked my account.

I sent complaint email to Europcars and of course never got response.

When returning the car, I called for manager to tell him about their scam practices and after about 15 minutes when he claimed that he is checking my reservation - he came back smiling and stating that he can see my signature and of course he stands behind his colleagues and I can do nothing against it.

I told him that I will come to the car check in room and tell my story to all the clients renting the car. That clearly upset him and he even started to THREATEN me that if I went behind that door, I would have a huge problem (which could mean anything in Mexico), he would call police (I told him that I want to call them myself), I wouldn`t like it at all etc.

Threatening your clients - I couldn`t believe my eyes.
You really don`t feel safe here!

STAY OUT OF THIS COMPANY!

Booked my car through Economy bookings…

Booked my car through Economy bookings and paid 800+ CAD. Bought the extra insurance on their site. Went to pick up my car at Europcar and they would not give it to me as they said I needed extra insurance of 1300 USD. Asked for my refund and they won't give it to me. These guys are a total scam and fraudsters. DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THEM. I have emailed them and am waiting a reply so I may change my rating to see if their customer service does anything

Thats bad

I was given a car that was of a lower class than the one reserved through my Danish travel agency. Unfortunately, I only found out about this when I was driving from the rental at the airport. For example, there was no speed pilot in the car. At the same time, I was encouraged to buy a full tank when I picked it up, because it would be more expensive and difficult to fill up when I dropped it off. This is not correct, I could see when I dropped it off. So it was more about being able to make more money for Europcar than it was about good service for me as a customer. I think that is rude. I pointed out these things when I dropped it off and had hoped for compensation. There were no employees at the drop-off who had the managerial competence to correct this poor treatment. I will now go to my Danish travel agency and ask them not to use you in the future as this is poor customer service. I will not recommend others to use you as long as this is not under control.

Dear customer, we sincerely apologize for the experience you had. Providing a vehicle of a lower category than the one reserved is not our standard, and we regret the misinformation regarding fuel options. No refund for cancelled reservation

On Nov. 27, 2024 rented an Ertiga (6 or 7 pass.), guaranteed WEB001351648 from Europcar Puerto Vallarta (PVR) for Dec. 30. On Dec. 5 "Christian at Eurpocar PVR re-confirmed said vehicle would be available.
Attended Europcar PVR on Dec. 30 and was told by "Joya Cisneros Carlos" no such vehicle was available, but was offered a 5 pass. vehicle (unacceptable. I own a 5 pass. veh. and wanted/rented a 6 or 7 pass. veh.). Per "Joya's" direction, I called Europcar on Dec. 30 to cancel reservation and was told a refund would be issued within 24 to 48 hrs.
I called Europcar again on Jan. 2 about the refund. "Alan Berry" told me at 10 am I needed to send an email to Europcar reservations and a refund would be issued within 24 to 72 hours. I sent an email on Jan. 2.
Despite many follow-ups to Europcar (to "Connie" on Jan. 9, Jan. 13 and Jan. 20), still no refund

Tried to scam me for money

Tried to scam me for money. They wanted one price for cash (insurance) and another on card. And also, the car insurance was already covered by booking.com but still, they wanted more.
They never pick up the phone during emergencies. We had issues with the cars gear and we could not reach them for the four days we had the car.

They suck.

Scammed and Threatened with Imprisonment

We rented a car from Fox Rent a Car (which is owned by Europcar) in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Before arriving from USA, we called Fox Rent a Car to purchase insurance (as is mandatory in Mexico), and were told full coverage was what we needed, so we purchased it. When arriving in Mexico, we were directed to Europcar. They told us the insurance we purchased was not sufficient and refused to rent us the car unless we paid an additional $11,000 pesos for liability insurance for a week's rental, and refused to give a refund on the rental, since we had booked through a broker. When we tried to call the same person at Fox who told us full coverage was all we needed, the phone of the woman behind the counter next to us rang... she was the one who we spoke to earlier who had lied to us about what coverage we needed.

We asked for a business card from the employee who was demanding the extra fees so we could document it, and he said he didnt have one. So I decided to take a photo of his name tag instead - he immediately became very aggressive and started dialing the PV police, saying it was illegal for me to take photos of him,and that I would be put in jail for at least 5 days. He was extremely threatening, but my wife was able to deescalate the situation before things got worse.

We are now concerned that the aggressive employee will be there when we return the car, but Europcar has not responded to our requests for assurances of our safety. Emails to thier customer service department have gone unanswered. It sounds like this scam is quite common when reading the other reviews, but being threatened with being put in jail was even more upsetting.

Update 10/25: After fighting them for nearly a year to get them to change the way they treat customers, Europcar Mexico has offered us compensation: 1 free day car rental (if we rent a car for more than 2 days). What a bunch of crooks.

Scam

Same problems as everyone here.

They lie to your face that CDW is mandatory in Mexico and when you call their bullshit they just say ok sorry it's our policy. I just cancelled the rental altogether because their insurance would cost triple the original booked price.

Do not rent here

Do not use this company! Scam!! Booked them through Expedia. When we arrived they wanted a $5000usd deposit. They refuse to refund our money and expedia refuses to do anything about it. Ended up going next door to Hertz, and got a SUV with their insurance for a total of $200.

They force you to buy their insurance!

We rented a car in Oaxaca through Expedia. We also purchased a full-coverage insurance plan through Expedia. We then proceeded to be held hostage at the rental location while a room full of salespeople tried to get us to buy enough insurance to double the original price of the rental. They explained that they don't accept any insurance plans that don't explicitly cover 30,000 pesos, which in essence forces customers to buy insurance from them. They said this AFTER we showed them that our policy covered $35,000 pesos. At one point the salesperson put a credit card reader on top of one of our passports, which gave me even less confidence in their desire to put us at ease.

They show up as Fox on Expedia. Beware and stay away!

WORST COMPANY!!

We had the worst experience renting a car from this company, we made our reservation through discover Cars, we got a good price and full coverage, but the people from Europcar, a guy named ISCAR and some lady called Evelyn Fernanda, they were really rude to us from the moment we arrived, almost forcing us to pay extra 400 dollar minimum for additional insurance. Which we refused to get, So they charged us a 14,000 dollar deposit guarantee on our card, or they wouldn’t let us take the car. Honestly we just wanted to cancel right there but they told us in the worst way possible almost mocking us that it was non refundable , and it was late and we were traveling with 2 little kids who were so tired and crying so we had no choice. When we returned the car a week later, thank goodness the guy who assisted us was really nice and actually told us that the amount of money that they charged us as a deposit/guarantee was ridiculous and totally unacceptable. And that the coverage that we bought from the beginning was the recommended, so contrary of what those people said! At the end he closed the contract without any extra charges, but the experience with the sales people were the worst, NEVER RENTING A CAR FROM THIS COMPANY AGAIN!!

LADRONES

LADRONES, THIVES. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM or any other agency that recommend them. First of all I got an estimate from them through Expedia. Five Days for $55. When we arrived at the Cabo Airport we were told that the rental was going to be $220 plus $5000 security deposit. We agree because we had no other choice. The gave us a Kia and reported 1/2 tank of gas to be returned. The indicator showed almost out of gas. I took a picture just in case I would need it later. At return of the car they tried to charge 7000 pesos for a crack in the windshield that was there when we picked up the car, plus charges for the gas although we returned it with two lines above the original level. I refused to pay and left. They refused to let us use their convenience van to the Airport Terminal, so we walked. Two days after we were back home they charged $1309.02 to my Visa card. Try to contact them they hung up the phone. Currently opened a claim with my Visa card Bank. LADRONES, COLBONES. Me negué a pagar y me fui.

Scammers

I booked a car online and received an email that I would have to pay $467 (USD) only when I picked it up. When I arrived they put the price up to $719 for no reason. The car was an awful standard. The staff seemed more like criminals than professionals. This happened at Tapachula airport. They have refused to refund me.

NO REFUNDS!

The first time I rented a car with them, everything went rather smoothly, a 4/5 stars.
A few days later I made a second reservation but on the day of the pick-up, no cars were available. I've been trying to get a refund for a month now but they've stopped replying.

THIEVES! STAY FAR AWAY!

Rented a white Toyota license plate # DSN-996–E Chiapas dates August 3 - 10, 2024. All very well at the beginning of the contract at the AIFA airport, thank you very much to Mr. Alejandro for his help and excellent service.
However, just 10-20 minutes after returning the car to Benito Juárez airport in Mexico City, I realized that I had forgotten a sealed envelope with a large amount of money and the staff of the Europcar office at Mexico City airport STOLE it! Yes, there is a warning to remove all the personal items from the car when returning but this type of business has customers who are obviously in the stress of boarding planes. They should have the morality, ethics and principles when the client forgets something, they should not bet or count on being able to STEAL what is forgotten by haste, stress, or error! And they also have the audacity to say that my envelope with the money was not found but only the papers that are folded and also sealed inside the envelope with $10,000 dollars. They even sent me photos of the papers that they "found," admitting that they themselves opened the sealed envelope! But they can expect my lawsuit any day now. STAY AWAY FROM EUROPCAR THIEVES!

One big scam!

The price of the rent looked very good. However, when you arrive you learn that you have to buy insurance. The insurance packages are more expensive then the rent of the car itself. If you don't insure, they will ask >13.000 USD as deposit for a car that's not even worth that amount of money. They ask insane prices for any damage inflicted and are trying to find every little details they can. Never experienced this before. For every renter here, I advise you take pictures of everything, inside and out. Don't forget one spot because they will not. They will search your car untill they fiend anything they can use to let you pay more. Very poor service. One big scam!
