Tom Holland is probably one of the very best historians of his generation. Outstanding and Rubicon is a fantastic achievement, full of human detail, new stories, and a grand view of the end of the Roman Republic. The entire triology (Rubicon, Dinasty and Pax) is worthy of the summits of historical literature. To read avidely and re read. The only bad thing is that eventually you will come to the end of the story.

My first experience with a Tom Holland work . It is exceedingly clever on several levels, and very stylishly, but plainly written. It makes me sorry I didn't order Persian Fire before it went out of print. I may even sample his fiction. The volume is beautiful, a joy to read.
