I signed up to Coconut because my needs are very simple with only small amounts of money involved and they advertised a fee of just £3 per month for the smallest businesses. All good, no problems until they suddenly announced that £3 was rising to £9 /month in one hit! I contacted them to ask if this was right and to express my displeasure. They said I could apply for a reduced fee for a small user - but would have to apply every single month! Like I've got nothing better to do. And they can SEE my accounts and that they're still tiny. And now the monthly fee has gone up again to £9.95. I intensely dislike companies that hook you in with a promise of reasonable, realistic costs then dump their promises and start fleecing you. I'm looking for a better solution. Thought maybe Ember - but I just read the reviews. I don't even have to do tax returns anymore so I probably only need my bank statements.

Hi Aiden, It's taken me a while to get back to you. I'm enjoying using Coconut, with one or two provisos.

(1) I use it for 4 properties that I let out, helped by a Lettings & Management firm. They pay me "netted out" income after deducting expenses like management fees etc. These payments of course show up in my linked property bank account. I understand how to correct for these "netted out" payments by doing a manual correction - but I guess there may be no way of getting around this slightly cumbersome manoeuvre.

(2) The numbered "boxes" on HMRC's tax form for Property Expenses - don't really tally with the business expenses options available on your drop down menu choices on Coconut. It would be good not to have to lump things together under "Other Costs" For example - where do "management fees" go, "costs of services provided" - ie gardening, or "service Charge". All in all - Coconut is nearly brilliant. I'm using it to feed information into my GoSimple Tax form.

I realise things are evolving, as MTD-ITSA is not live yet. The HMRC boxes that I have to use are:- 26 Rent /Rates/Insurance/Ground Rents. 27 Property Repairs & Maintenance. 28 Loan Interest & Other financial Costs. 29 Legal, Management & Other Professional Fees. 30 Costs of Services provided including wages. 31 Other allowable Property Expenses. 37 Cost of Replacing Domestic Items (if need to record separately)

I think many Landlords like me would appreciate it greatly if the Coconut drop down menu choices for "expenses" included more of these areas. I hope you don't mind my rather lengthly comment. Please keep going - it's great. Brian

Perfect for book keeping my little business. So simple and straightforward to manage my accounts - separating business income and costs from my general day to day account management. I love to be able to attach my receipts to spending. I can see at a glance how much turnover and profit I’m making. The recommendation how much to put aside for tax is also a very useful feature.

After trying other well known accounting software which weren’t easy to use, I tried a months free trial with Coconut and hey presto! Very easy to use and keep up to date with my accounts/tax/income/exspenses, it also has the feature to split buisness and personal use. Needless to say I’ve signed up with Coconut on a rolling monthly basis and is very competitively priced and worth every penny, can’t recommend Coconut account software enough for sole traders/self employed etc!

This online and phone app is probably the best you will find for ease of use and functionality. Support is great, combine with their tax return software GoSimpleTax and life gets easier.

Very simple to use and a great time saver in terms of bookkeeping. The tax information is very useful in order to plan for costs down the line.

Unfortunately this Software has not worked fully since I signed up. I have flagged various problems since and the customer service is extremely slow, it comes across like they are adverse to constructive critism.
Such a shame, it could be great, but feels like its failing. I've just cancelled my subscription even though I was given 6 months free, that's how frustrating I have found it.
The combination with Go Simple Tax feels like the company cannot cope.
I should probably be offered a refund of all of my subs, but I'm guessing that wont happen either.
If you are a Private Landlord, I would suggest you look elsewhere. Sorry Get Coconut, but you've had plenty of time and chances to fix everything.

I've been looking for a simple-to-use system for invoicing clients/recording payments/preparing for self-assessment tax return. Many of the systems I looked at seemed quite complex and didn't quite do what I wanted. Coconut seems to be the Goldilocks app for my needs - not too complicated, not too simple, just right. Sending invoices is very easy and the whole app and website feels quite intuitive to use. Pleased with this so far. Price seems fair too.

Really useful tool for keeping track and it even calculates your suggested tax return as you go

Coconut is easy to use and I actually find it quite fun!

Have been running my business for a few years and recently joined coconut. It’s helped me really get my income/expenses in order and made self assessment a lot easier. Very user friendly, and love the fact I can send out my invoices through it. Highly recommend for small business accounting!
