SCAM!!!!
The credit card machine is rigged, so they can decide when to stop a payment to go through. Merchant terminals can set an internal limit for the transaction not to go through. Barclay fraud team confirm that no payment instruction was sent through otherwise I would get a text to confirm the transaction (which I typically sometimes get).

I had a truly disappointing experience…

I had a truly disappointing experience with Green Motion’s Manchester Airport branch. They charged me a fuel surcharge even though I returned the car with more fuel than when I collected it. I had photographic and video evidence, which I had sent. Even worse, when I returned the car, I spoke with a staff member, showed her the video, and she assured me everything was fine—both for the fuel and the pre-existing damages. Now, I feel misled and treated unprofessionally. Despite my clear documentation, their handling of the issue was unacceptable.

This company -Birmingham UK division - are scam artists and I would not advise that anyone use their services.

There is no doubt that the scratch was there before i took the car and I am sure that they have used this scam over and over.

This company is a scam

This company is a scam. You will regret if you rent from here. There is no customer service they’ve self admitted that the Heathrow branch line is disconnected. Even head office struggles to respond. They are scam artists. And very rude. I unfortunately hired a car here and self-admittedly lost the key. I took full responsibility and paid £400 for replacement. However, the key they replaced it with was now only a manual key. Instead of the full Electric key. Now to enter the car, I must put myself in danger. The only way of opening the car manually is by using the passenger front door. So I must walk around to the passenger door put the key in turn it open the door which then set the alarm off then I must sit in the passenger seat reach over and put the key in the ignition to turn the alarm off. And I must do that to lock it. I complained to green motion explaining that not only is this a danger as I must often put myself in the way of traffic to open and lock the car but the alarm is also highly problematic. They refuse to replace the key with a proper functioning key and they were refused to exchange the car so now I’m stuck for two months living with this problem even though I paid £400. I have emailed over 100 times with not one single response. I have unfortunately been renting cars back to back for the last two years and green motion by far are the biggest scam artist I know. I have escalated this matter with the ombudsman and all pertaining parties

My advice, avoid this company...

When we arrived our perfectly good credit card was declined (we checked, and it had been fine with another hire company previously). The guys at Gatwick said they could only take a debit card if I took out their insurance (I had my own excess cover) this cost me an addition amount, almost £300!
Their park is away from the airport and you're tired from travel, so they have you over a barrel. They refused to check the car before I left, saying there was no point as I had insurance anyway... it had various marks on it.
I reported some damages by email the next day, their central contacts said it would be passed to the Gatwick branch.
On the car return, they went over it, raising a load of damages over the car, I queried this: for instance he tried to claim a scratch on the side had just happened, but I had reported it on my earlier e-mail as already being there. I had a flight to catch, was waiting on them getting me transferred to the airport, (I am on special assistance for spine problems) they seemed to want to claim the whole car upgrade on the insurance... but you are under pressure so you can leave.
For me this just felt wrong.
My recommendation is to avoid them!

Very small car, not what was ordered

Friendly staff. But I ordered aI ordered a 4-door Golf or similar. When I arrived at the car rental centre I was given a Fiat 500, very different to a Golf and completely unsuitable for 3 well-built adults. I was offered a Mercedes for an extra £180, or an electric car for an extra £120. Any other car rental company I have used would have given me a free upgrade under those circumstances. In the end we survived a very uncomfortable weekend in the Fiat 500, but I will not be using Green Motion again.

Being scammed by Green Motion…

I hired a car at Birmingham airport to travel to my mother's funeral. I took photos as required of any damages inside and outside the car prior to leaving. While in the UK I used the car very little as I was travelling with family members in their car to the funeral itself. On arrival back at Birmingham airport a staff member of Green Motion said there was a mark on the driver side rear door. Neither myself nor my family could see any mark, then barely made out a VERY slight mark, which certainly wasn't caused by me and not photographed in advance as it was practically invisible to the eye. If anything a polish would get rid of the so called mark. There was no scratch or break in the paint whatsoever. I refused to sign off on the car hire as firstly I didn't cause it, though it was my word against that of the staff member, Secondly it was so hard to see it did not warrant being called 'DAMAGE'. I was horrified on return to my home to find that Green Motion charged me £630 for this without advising me in advance, or with any discussion. We disputed this back and forth and to just put closure on it I offered to pay £300 which they refused, stating their cars were on lease and had to be returned in pristine condition. This car was anything but pristine condition to start with, not being a new car, and Green Motion pointed out other damages already on their paperwork. They were very difficult to deal with, no compromise whatsoever and it was ridiculous to apply this amount for a mark you could barely see. They did not advise they were applying a DAMAGE SERVICE FEE also. I advised them I had the right to engage my own independent motor assessor to challenge their assessment but they said their cars were on lease for a number of years and this was not possible to do this on their side. I really feel I have been scammed by Green Motion. I would never, ever recommend hiring a car from them. They are ruthless and completely dishonest. You really are at their mercy if you use this company

Stole my 2,000 MYR deposit – full insurance paid, no damage, ignored for weeks

I rented a car from Green Motion at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (Meet & Greet) under Booking #730894720. I paid for their full "cover all" insurance, which is supposed to eliminate any excess for damage.

At pickup:
A male staff member named Johnny asked me to pay a 2,000 MYR deposit using his payment terminal. I paid immediately with my credit card via Apple Pay (last 4 digits 3144). The transaction appears on my bank statement as:
"LS TOUR KK, TUARAN MY" on 17 February 2026 for 2,000 MYR (approx. 4,093 HKD).

Car return:
I returned the car on Sunday, 22 February 2026, on time, with a full tank of gas, and in perfect condition – no scratches, no dents, no damage of any kind. Because I had paid for full cover insurance, even if there had been damage, it would have been covered.

After return:
According to Green Motion's policy, the deposit should be refunded within 28 days, i.e. by Sunday, 22 March 2026. Today is 7 April 2026 – more than two weeks past the deadline. I have contacted Green Motion multiple times by email and phone since returning the car. They have not replied once.

Conclusion:
This is not a mistake or a misunderstanding. It appears to be a deliberate practice: offer cheap rentals and full insurance, collect a deposit, then refuse to refund it while ignoring all customer communication. No damage claim is even possible because I had full cover insurance – yet they keep my money.

Do not rent from Green Motion. Even if you buy their top insurance and return the car perfectly, they may still steal your deposit. I am now pursuing a chargeback with my bank and filing consumer complaints in Malaysia.

Avoid this company at all costs.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY they catch you out with practices that although legal are designed to take your money knowing that many people will turn up to collect the car with only a debit card rather than a credit card. Once this has happened you have infringed their no show policy and they take your prepayment for the car. Many people do not have a credit card these days and they know it.

3 stars seems fair.

3 stars seems fair.
Good things: the car I hired was a good car and the price was very competitive.
Also, the staff was kind and helpful.
But still, it seems as though Green Motion business model is to try rip off its customers however it can, while being formally on the right side of the law.
So you wanna carefully read the fine print with them, to spare yourself from some nasty surprises.
For example: when you collect your car you find out that the deposit is GBP 2.500
Pretty steep, but never mind, here is my Amex card, I have enough allowance on this one.
Except they don’t take Amex (first time I go to a rental company that doesn’t accept Amex).
Then I have a couple of Mastercard cards, but I bet most Mastercards don’t have this kind of allowance, especially if you have already spent some money and therefore you have exhausted a good portion of your monthly limit.
True, it’s all written in the fine prints, but nobody reads the fine print, and that’s exactly what they count on, it’s part of their business model.
So next move is that they can graciously reduce your deposit to GBP 1.500 but then you need to pay extra and/or you get a lesser car.
Then they try to push you into buying their overpriced insurance.
Finally after much negotiation and stress, off you go and just pray that no even the most insignificant hiccup happens or you’ll pay through your nose.
For a very minor scratch on the wheel rim I was charged GBP 230 (35 of which as admin fee) and then it was painfully slow to get the docs I needed to make my insurance claim.
Only when I contacted the broker through which I had made the booking as well as purchased my insurance (CarJet) I was finally able to make my claim.
I will think twice about using Green Motion again.
My sister had a very similar experience with them in Greece.

My car voucher booking was for a Honda…

My car voucher booking was for a Honda CR-V (list price £47k) or similar from Stansted airport location Novotel hotel. On arrival I was offered a jeep avenger (list price £26k) or a Citroen C3 (list price £20k). I laughed and said they are not in the same group I had paid for, but the operative was insistent that he was right. I had to pay an extra £56 to get a car (was offered a Kia sportage or a Peugeot 3008) as an upgrade. How it can be an upgrade when my booked and paid for in advance car is double the purchase price of the car offered says only one thing “SCAM ALERT” it can only be some form of bonus scheme for employees otherwise there is no point in them running this kind of breach of contract and dishonesty. I think a braver man with more time and a better education should take them to task legally. I would like to say that in general Green Motion offerer very good quality cars for the price paid (if you get what you’ve paid for that is) but they have not always been cleaned before the next hirer takes over, as was the case with my “False upgrade” this morning. With hindsight I should have sat there and refused to budge before they gave me the car I had paid for, the queue to pickup was getting longer and the manager was getting a bit fraught with his 2 underlings speed of processing new customers.I am finding it very difficult to get an email address for Green motion to deliver my email, they keep bouncing back from the postmaster, so I have written this really too kind review instead. Good luck all.

Booked with U-Save and Green Motion

Booked with U-Save, it turned out with Green Motion. None or less, the Heathrow office charged 10 times more for not paying the holding deposit with credit card.

Also, Green Motion charged me PCN management fee £65 TWICE, even I have told them the penalties were appealed. They took the money directly from my account without informing me.

HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT and bad experience with Green Motion, will never book with them again, please be aware the low price trap on booking.com and the other third party website.

Basically extortion - BEWARE - your Third Party Excess Cover probably excludes Green Motion!

I unwittingly booked car hire from Stansted Airport with Green Motion by booking with U-Save, which as I was later to find out is a trading name of Green Motion, and found their operation is essentially a scam. To explain, I booked the Car Hire through the Holiday Extras app as it appeared to be very competitively priced for the car and as always I was going to arrange my own third party excess cover to ensure the cost was kept to a minimum. On arrival I saw the cabin was co-branded U-Save and Green Motion, which for reasons that will be come apparent concerned me. I was asked to provide passport, driving licence and credit card. The customer service guy also asked me what my job was and said to provide my National Insurance number (on thinking about this afterwards this was odd and concerning as I don't t think I need all that info for security checks). He then asked me about excess; I explained I had a 3rd party excess policy from Eversure (cost of cover £32 for two weeks) but was concerned that it may not cover me as the wording specifically states that it is not valid for Car Hire from Green Motion (he feigned surprise). I explained to him that this had not concerned me when I took out the policy as I was hiring from U-Save but obviously saw the cabin is branded both Green Motion and U-Save - I asked him to confirm who I was hiring from; he confirmed it was ultimately Green Motion (as they own U-Save) which would obviously mean my third party excess was invalid. Given this, I asked him to how much it was to purchase insurance through them. He pointed to a table which showed the different cover options, then said he would work out how much each would be for my rental. He gave me four options but he did not print anything out, he simply wrote the costs down on a scrap of paper. They ranged from no insurance and a c£1,500 excess up to full cover/excess for a insurance cost of c£670 for my two week hire! I think the cheapest excess option was c£400. I pointed out that the full cover was about and 4.5 times the cost of the hire and the cheapest over 2.5 times and he essentially just shrugged. I was obviously on the spot a bit as I was now stuck at the Novotel in Stansted with no car however there was no way I could afford to pay that much more for this car hire which had been advertised as c£140 for two weeks. In addition to this, the general manner and approach of this hire company and the guy was making me very nervous and simply did not feel right, so I said I did not want to proceed. He then tried to persuade me otherwise ('we are cheapest at Stansted' etc) but when i held firm he simply said that he had cancelled it on their system. I obviously asked him how I would be refunded and he said that he cannot refund me because, as the hire had not gone ahead and the booking had been cancelled they (U-Save/Green Motion) had not been paid. He said they only get paid once the hire has gone ahead and that to get my refund I have to contact Holiday Extra. At that point I left the U-Save/Green Motion cabin and walked across the car park to the Novotel and made a few calls to try and arrange to be picked up. Whilst I was waiting I then contacted Holiday Extra via chat facility to arrange refund. During my chat with Holiday Extra they said I had to get the refund from U-Save/Green Motion when I explained they said other wise they asked me to get the name of the guy I dealt with at U-Save so I walked back across to the cabin whilst I was still live on the chat and spoke to him again. He confirmed his name was Ibrahim but refused to give me his surname (he said that was company policy not to give out surnames). He again insisted that the booking had been cancelled at their end, meaning they did not receive the money and therefore I had to arrange a refund from Holiday Extra.
I went through the complaint process with Holiday Extra to obtain a refund on the grounds that it was not made clear that I was actually hiring from Green Motion meaning it was not covered by my 3rd party excess cover and thus, given the extortionate Green Motion insurance costs, made the car hire far in excess of the advertised cost and therefore unaffordable. Regrettably, Holiday Extra did not refund me and I am £140 out of pocket.
In light of the fact that the insurer, Eversure, specifically exclude Green Motion from their excess policy cover, I looked at reviews online to see if this was normal or just a one off; turns out Green Motion are well known for this & there was a BBC investigation into them in 2019 (may be why they have rebranded to U-Save). Finally, when arranging alternative car hire I discovered at least one other 3rd party excess provider have excluded hire from Green Motion in their terms. In short do not risk hiring from this company. BTW I got alternative hire from Enterprise for £345 plus £29 3rd party excess cover, so half the price I would have paid.

Charged for a dent that eyes can’t see.

Should have read the reviews before we booked. Charged for a dent that requires tools to prove it exists
Have rented cars through several providers in the last 10 years. Never had such worst experience.

Green motion was the actual provider of the car but carjet was the middleman along with u-save.

Two main things to note here. The fuel provided was half tank but the paperwork noted it as 3/4 which looks like extortion as I ended up paying 50 pounds for the fuel when I only used 1/4 of the tank and couldn't fill it back before returning.

Second and most important one. When the car was taken I couldn't take a full picture or video of the car of the car as it was raining heavily. But when we returned the car, the guy in the office checked the car every inch and looked as if he was searching a known spot for some time which was suspicious and then he asked if I knew of any dents when I've taken. I said no as I couldn't inspect. He then showed me an ever so light dent on the wing which was invisible to the naked eye but showed a very small dent which was only possible to check using a phone light at an angle. And was charged almost 380 pounds for that. I know for a matter of fact that this dent couldn't have happened in my rental but was somehow hidden from a previous rental. I cannot show evidence but the almost invisible dent was searched out of nowhere and was presented as a fault of mine and taking 380 pounds from me for a car that cost 35 pounds to rent doesn't seem right to me. The guy had a hard time to prove that there was a dent indeed using several tools, reflections, images etc. Not going again with carjet, u-save or green motion. Thanks.

Unsafe vehicle, zero support, total abdication of responsibility

To be clear, this review is not about inconvenience - it is about the complete lack of safety, accountability, and duty of care from Green Motion!

Let me explain.
We rented a Nissan Juke (YC25 **R) from Green Motion London Gatwick on 28 January 2026 for peace of mind and convenience. After just 24 hours, the car broke down mid-derive on the M2 motorway after multiple warning lights appeared suddenly and the vehicle losing power completely.

My family was then stranded on the motorway after only narrowly managing to coast to the last available stretch of hard shoulder on that stretch of road.

The electronic handbrake malfunctioned, blinking repeatedly and failing to engage properly which resulted in the vehicle almost rolling backwards into oncoming motorway traffic.

The RAC later attended and independently confirmed the following:
• Faulty alternator
• Engine fault
• Stop/start system fault

This vehicle was not roadworthy, clearly unsafe and should not have been in circulation.

What followed was even worse.
Instead of taking responsibility, Green Motion told us we needed to contact a Nissan dealerships ourselves to arrange a repair - despite the fault being entirely theirs. No contact details were provided, no explanation of the recovery process and no replacement was proactively arranged - we were simply left to sort it out ourselves.

The next morning, we attempted to contact the Gatwick branch over 40 times with no answer. Green Motion UK then advised us to wait up to 14 working days for the franchise to respond - knowing full well we had no working vehicle despite paying for a 17 day hire.

As a result:
• We could not get to work
• We could not do the school run
• We had to cancel long-awaited hospital appointments

This experience demonstrates a complete lack of duty of care, accountability, and basic customer service. Supplying a faulty vehicle that strands a family on a motorway is bad enough. Abandoning customers afterwards and pushing responsibility back onto them is unacceptable.

I am sure Green Motion UK will respond with something inane like "process" or "franchise responsibility", to which I would strongly counter with:

"A rental company's internal franchise structure is **irrelevant** to the customer when a family is stranded on a motorway in a vehicle that should never have been hired out in the first place. No excuse is good enough, do better!"

Avoid if you value your sanity, safety, reliability or support when things go wrong.

AVOID!!! AVOID!!! AVOID!!!
Booked 2 weeks in advance a mid size car, VW Golf, for Christmas week for 3 adults + luggage, arriving in the evening, Edinburgh Airport.
When we arrived they offered a downgraded Fiat 500, and a free tank of petrol as a ‘gesture of good will’, obvious a Fiat wasn’t big enough to fit us and so we were left stranded.
Offered absolutely no further assistance, even when we requested help in finding an alternative solution as a member of our group had limited mobility. The staff working there were shockingly unhelpful.
Ridiculous company. Appalling service
