I've recently used it on a Victorian fence and gate. Yes it's gloopy as its a water based formula. It went on well, dried quickly and has cured to a reasonably hard finish. I'm satisfied with the resu... See more

A complete and utter waste of money
A complete and utter waste of money. Have used in the past and been pleased with the outcome. However, this cannot be said of Hammerite’s current ‘direct to rust metal paint’. It is so gloppy, the only comparison I can make is that of painting with a thick glue based paint. Buy at your peril.
Hammerite Ultima
Some clown put this crap in the paint section in the shop. There should be a full recall months stuff and have it taken off the shelves. I've made a lovely gate for a customer and this so called paint has destroyed it. Thanks Scammerite.
Avoid this product!!
This paint has to be the worst I have ever used (Hammerite Direct to Metal). It is really thick to apply and dries so quickly after applying meaning you are unable to get a pleasing finish. Very disappointed as I have used Hammerite products for years. Do yourself a favour and give this a miss!!

Hammerite Black Gloss Garage door paint, bought from B&Q has done a fantastic job on my driveway gates and the gate to the side of our bungalow, Highly recommend this product.

I've recently used it on a Victorian fence and gate. Yes it's gloopy as its a water based formula. It went on well, dried quickly and has cured to a reasonably hard finish. I'm satisfied with the results but time will tell as to it's durability.
Hammerite Ultima worst paint ever!!
I have given Hammerite Ultima direct to rust 1 star but only because it doesn’t give an option to rate zero. I started painting my railings and had to stop because the paint was thick, gloopy and plastic like. I have just spent my morning taking it all off.. steer clear and buy a different product!
One star is too generous!
One star is too generous!! I’ve been painting with Hammerite for 40years, my dad before me and my grandfather before him. Their latest paint is absolutely awful and shouldn’t even be sold, it’s an utter joke, 3 coats won’t even cover and the new tin to continue was a completely different colour!! I will never buy Hammerite ever again and wish I’d beeen up to date with their reviews as it would have saved me a lot of money…. Disgraceful product!
Hammerite Garage Door Paint
As I write we are trying to paint our garage door using Hammerite Garage Door Paint (Buckingham Green). After using many excellent Hammerite paints in the past, this is a big disappointment. It is very thin and watery, has no colour and will not cover. It runs and drips badly, I cannot understand how Hammerite can market such a poor product. The minimum one-star rating is too good for it.
Professional painter for 30years+
Professional painter for 30years+
Just done a job for a client garage door.
She brought hammerite garage door paint, never used it and will never again it needs to be taken off the shelves.
It's like painting with treacle and the finish is awful...I felt bad for being paid...
Bought tin direct to rust metal paint…
Bought tin direct to rust metal paint from hammerite in white to paint wrought iron garden bench, chair and foot stool. Not a quick job as ornate. It was quite thick paint so difficult to get paint into fiddly corners but as time went on, my brush was getting clogged up & paint was getting thicker. I persevered but gave up having done the bench only. The finish was looking blobby. I have used hammerite before so unsure if it was just this type of paint. I ended up buying a new tin of paint from a rival brand to finish the job. Will not be buying hammerite again as half a tin of paint & money wasted.
Avoid this paint
Please save your money and don’t buy this product. The paint colour ( muted clay) isn’t anything like the colour on the tin, a more appropriate name for it would be ‘showroom dummy’.
To add insult to injury the paint is difficult to apply and somewhat gluey, happily I abandoned the job before I done too much due to the awfulness of the colour.
I contacted their helpline and although polite, the guy I spoke to wasn’t really interested with the discrepancy between paint tin colour swatch and actual product.
To sum up - Avoid
garden furniture refurb
I painted some garden furniture with the original thinners base paint 8/9 years ago and it’s still intact. The new batch of paint is flaking off after 18 months, it’s just not the same.
must agree with other reviews
must agree with other reviews, like most of them I have used Hammerite for years with great results, never again, dries so quick you can't get it on the surface before it's drying, therefore can't get a smooth finish and looks awful when dry. again like others I now have to wait for it to harden so I can sand it off and start again.
Been using Hammerite for years
Been using Hammerite for years, this is water based useless paint. Wasted 2 days of my life to put it on and get rid of it. Never more!
One star is being generous.
Unfortunately I can’t give this zero stars, one is being generous. Unusually for me I didn’t read reviews before buying the paint. But then again why would I? It’s Hammerite, I have used it for years, It’s been a goto product. Not now though, and I concur with the reviews below. It’s like painting with glue and my gate looks like a complete amateur job. I will have to wait for the paint to harden completely, rub it down with wet and dry paper, and buy a different paint for a top coat. And I will also need a new paint brush. I try not to write scathing reviews but after eight hours of prep I have more work on my hands. Yep, fumin’!
Hammerite Direct to Rust
Used Hammerite Direct to Rust on my metal garage doors. Its like using glue, dries instantly and very difficult to work with. I used Hammerite 5 years ago on these doors and the finish was smooth; now its a complete mess. I will never purchase this product again.
Bought hammerite ultra to freshen up a…
Bought hammerite ultra to freshen up a galvanized trailer as the claims for it by the company sounded ideal for the job. Never Again. It's like painting treacle it dries to quickly, Impossible to get rid of the brush marks. Job looks a complete dogs dinner. I tried emailing the company for advice but no reply, and it's about the most expensive paint of this type. Not a patch on the old hammerite. Will never use again.
Avoid Hammerite paint
We laboriously wire-brushed loose rust and old paint off two long sections of railings and applied direct-to-rust Hammerite paint summer 2022, one year later it’s all peeling off. Hammerite used to be a by-word for quality, but it’s now completely useless. I regret the hours and money spent.
Please avoid...never had to say that before....
Used Hammerite for years. Splosh it on and a great durable finish.
Used it on the front porch supports. Stripped off the old paint, sanded down and even used their primer as some of the metal was galvanised. Holy molley - nearly had a domestic as I chastised the other half for putting it on too thin (she's a better painter). Went on thin - sagged, blotched. The end finish looks like you chucked cement into the paint. IT IS AWFUL. I note it is quick dry so presumable they have taken the VOC's out to make it Either way JUST DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR and avoid. Worth pointing out I tore a muscle stripping the beams in the first place.
I wiull never buy this product again....
