Always use HGM for my charity's scrap. Funds in the bank account the same day. Team is also happy to confirm items that are unmarked but are not for scrap, so that we can then sell ourselves. A hard working team of very nice people and great new premises.

I was ordering Gold from a listing which was described as the old britannia white gold bars however after my purchase the newer blue britannia gold bars arrived which was quite a shame as that wasn't the product I wanted. It was still a good price just a bit misleading.

“Return non-gold items” does NOT include diamonds

I think customers need to be aware of the wording Hatton Garden Metals uses when selling jewellery containing diamonds or precious stones.

I selected “RETURN NON GOLD/SILVER ITEMS: Yes, return non gold items.” I understood this to mean that anything that wasn't gold or silver would be returned, including diamonds.

The diamonds were from my mother's ring and I intended to keep and reuse them, so they had considerable sentimental value. I had also previously had stones returned by the company, which reinforced my understanding.

To be fair, the confirmation email I received before posting my jewellery did contain a warning explaining that stones are not returned and may be crushed, hammered out or melted. However, I believe the wording when making the original selection is unnecessarily ambiguous.

What has made this experience particularly upsetting is the way my concerns were handled afterwards. When I called and subsequently raised the matter formally by email, I explained the sentimental importance of my mother's diamonds. I came away feeling there was very little empathy or concern about what had happened, with the focus simply being on pointing me back to their terms.

Hatton Garden Metals has told me that stones aren't individually recorded or tracked, so they cannot tell me what specifically happened to my mother's diamonds.

Surely the option could simply say:

“RETURN NON-GOLD/SILVER ITEMS – EXCLUDING DIAMONDS AND OTHER STONES.”

That would remove any ambiguity.

I'm not claiming there was no warning elsewhere. My complaint is that something this important should be absolutely clear at the point the customer makes their selection.

If you're sending jewellery containing stones you want to keep, have them removed first. I just wish this had been clearer when I made my choice and that my concerns afterwards had been handled with more understanding.
