Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 197 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people expressed dissatisfaction with the service, highlighting issues with subscriptions, unexpected commercials in paid plans, and difficulties with account management, especially when purchased through third-party platforms. Customers also found the pricing to be a concern, feeling that the cost did not align with the quality of the service provided. The user experience was frequently criticized, with many encountering problems with the app freezing, playback issues, and an excessive number of ads, even for paying subscribers. Some people were particularly frustrated by having to rewatch ads after rewinding or pausing content. Conversely, a small portion of people found the service easy to subscribe to, simple to use, and appreciated the available shows, considering it good value at the introductory price.

HBO Max is a piece of trash

HBO Max is a piece of trash. This is the only app on my tv that freezes, has buffering issues, or just straight up loses connection to the internet. No other app does this. I’m seriously considering ending my subscription to HBO Max since it barely works anyway. Do not subscribe to this trash app.

Weak platform

I subscribed to HBO for the content, but apparently also signed up to beta test a streaming platform held together by hope and duct tape.

Simple settings don’t work. Just basic, everyday options that competitors figured out sometime around the invention of fire. Change a profile setting? Maybe. Maybe not. Depends on the phase of the moon.

Playback is a constant adventure. Episodes randomly stop - things that never happen on competing platforms unless your internet is powered by two cans and a string. HBO somehow manages to interrupt playback even when nothing else on my network is struggling.

Customer service is another highlight. By “customer service,” I mean a labyrinth of non-answers, broken links, and automated responses that feel designed to gently convince you to give up and reevaluate your life choices.

What’s most frustrating is that every other major streaming service just… works. You press play. It plays. Settings save. Support exists.

Great shows. Shockingly weak platform. Watching HBO feels less like streaming and more like a recurring technical challenge I didn’t ask for.

TERRIBLE and useless

TERRIBLE. I bought a subsrciption to watch the Australian Open semifinal match. The money was deducted from my account, but the streaming would not start, with the app constantly giving an error message. The match ended, I asked for my money back.Customer service said the money was not paid and to contact my bank. I provided evidence that the money has been deducted, they said to resolve this myself and then the customer rep simply ended the conversation. It is not a matter of 10eur, but a matter of principle and proper service. Never again.

Signed up for 12 month premium…

Signed up for 12 month premium subscription. All good then 10 weeks before renewal - subscription disappears into the ether. Online support - 4 times contact - unable to assist.. sent to tech support to sort out issue.. 2 weeks later still not resolved. Happy to take the $. No refund available and support is non existent. Now getting nil response to emails. Now have sent email to CEO and Marketing director.. the silence is deafening. So at 30 March 2026 - renew.. indeed NOT.

HBO needs fixing or is it Foxtel thats the issue?

It has shows I want to watch BUT it crashes and fails all the time. We have it with Foxtel and when it crashes it sits in a lope and I have to fast forward to continue to watch. Many times it fails and I'm throwen back to Foxtel menu. 😟 Not happy Jan!

Subscription Over Charge

Monthly subscription being billed every three weeks. I contacted HBO directly to discuss my account, but they said they couldn’t view my billing history because the subscription was purchased using Apple on my mobile. I wasn’t able to get any meaningful help with my account. I ended up having to cancel my current subscription and re-open a new subscription under my existing HBO account on the web.

Probably check your billing in case you’re being overcharged, especially since HBO refuses to discuss it.

Constant verification codes.

They only allow 5 profiles and ask for a code every time I log in. I'm an invalid and have to go to my computer any time they request this number. Not to mention the fact much of their lineup we don't have any interest in. I cancelled today and they charged me $15.00 for a certified letter to cancel. (Can you believe that?!) They jack up the price every year and the website gets less user friendly.

An app for people who have a lot of time to waste

I think after I finish IT: Welcome to Dery. I am not ever opening the HBO Max app on my television again. You know how with Netflix you can start binge watching a show and you can pause it and walk away and come back and pick up right where you left off. Whether it's 10 minutes or 10 days later, you can't do that with HBO Max. It starts you from the very first episode every single time. If you pause it for more than 5 minutes so then you spend 15 minutes trying to get back to the episode you were watching and by then you're ready to get up and do something else. It's just an overall annoying app, and it's making my enjoyment of this show go way down.

Didn't sign up for porn

Finally got app on my tv after a lot of messing around. Settled into a sci Fi series & into 3rd or 4th episode, when it went into explicit gay guys in bed. What people do is their own business, but I don't need it in my face. Stopped that series immediately & went into another show. This one was full on orgies, which didn't even have anything to do with the storyline. Just wasted my 12 month subscription as I won't be going back for more.

Appalling customer service

The streaming service and its content are decent, but the customer service is appalling. I've contacted them multiple times about different issues and they never seem to even understand the issue let alone provide a satisfactory response. Quite probably outsourced overseas to people without a solid grasp of English and responding with template answers.
