I did a review of Heraklion Airport 2 years ago. It hasn't changed a bit! Toilets are still disgusting. Lounge is still average. Boarding still haphazard. Ho hum.....

Probably the worst airport I ever will…
Probably the worst airport I ever will visit. We visited in summer with my 6 month old child. There were no luggage trolleys. So, I walked over to the area where the trolleys were supposed to be collected by the airport assistants. There were none. The two assistants were having a kip in wide view. I woke one and asked him for help only to receive a stern reply, " do you see any around?". Its an experience to remember. Not in any good way.
Crete stay ruined by airport experience.
This is third decade of a XXI century and in my opinion such place should simply not exist! Shockingly small airport where time stand still since probably mid 90s. Not enough sits in waiting area, Toilets with no toilet desk!! You squatting over, disabled toilets mostly unavailable, everything stink urine, hinges, locks, toilet paper rolls...broken, you will be lucky if your toilet door closes. Everything and everywhere dirty and falling apart. Announcement system very loud with lot of hiss in it. Information system very chaotic with changes being made in a very last minute and no airport staff able to help as they are confused too. I know they are building new airport so probably just let this one to slip into absolute ruin but there are authorities that should be responsible for this forgotten by God place! For my being there was a safety hazard all the time. Absolutely disgusting place to be and fly from.
Heraklion airport is the worst…
Heraklion airport has to be the worst airport we've used (I'd wiped it from my mind from 2020) We came back to Newcastle last night on a 9pm flight.
☆ Their security machines are prehistoric and they weren't even looking at the screens when bags went through.
☆ Too small for number of flights.
☆ Mens and womans toilets in departures stunk of stale wee. Most toilets didn't have locks or loo roll. My toilet had what looked like a thin paper clip to hold door closed (i was lucky it closed 🤣) , hole in door so people could see in, no loo seat, no loo roll and push button broken so wouldn't flush.
- The loos at the gate were similar.
☆ On arrival 3 flights were using one carousel and had about 700 people waiting which was carnage. Carousel kept breaking / stopping too.
☆ €5.40 for a small bottle of water. 😱
☆ The 180+ people on our flight waited 25 minutes or so for buses to take us to the plane. No seats for older or disabled people waiting on the tarmac / stairs.
Won't be hurrying back...
Definitely one of the worst airports I…
Definitely one of the worst airports I have ever flown from. Ling queues at security, there was a huge crowd behind with by far not enough seats anywhere and the whole building was dirty and in bad shape. All toilets were among the dirtiest I have ever seen and nobody is cleaning.
First time using this air port
First time using this air port, staff where fantastic, the police at past port control where brilliant I had left my phone so I thought at check point border control, the police took me back though check points, no problem so helpful, an returned my phone, brilliant service by all staff thank you so much 😊
Just used the airport this month
Just used the airport this month, returning to the UK. Absolute bedlam, cattle market, people sitting on pipes or on the floor. Ten minutes of the tannoy shouting out missing passengers to a flight. The whole airport is a joke. As I got to the gate i reached to finish off my water which was snatched out of my hands. When we finally got downstairs, plane was already half an hour late. Nobody cared.
Worst airport I have ever visited!
Heraklion airport is by far the worst airport I have ever visited.
We arrived late on the 18th September. Bags were delayed by around 45 mins to 1 hour for no apparent reason. Went to use the toilet in arrivals landside before we left, and they were filthy. I can understand they might be a bit unkept after a day of use, but they were disgusting. Signage to the Jet2 reps was non-existent - managed to find them in the end.
We departed late on the 24th September. Signage to our check-in desk was again non-existent. Only way we found it is because Jet2 have those massive flag things. We went in through the furthest door from the desks...typical!
Check in and security was ok, didn't take too long to get through considering the amount of people. Then we got into the departure lounge...
We did our shopping in duty free which was alright. Lots of stuff at reasonable prices.
Then we left duty free... talk about being in a cattle truck. You could barely move for people all crammed in.
Finding somewhere for a coffee and a snack was a mission. Had to take our initiative and wade through the packed in masses of people towards our gate, through a passport check point and then managed to find a cafe. Once again, no signage or anything about the check point before the gate.
Once you were past the point of no return there was a small cafe outlet which served nice coffee and snacks to be fair. There were nowhere near enough seating for the amount of people in the area.
Whichever way you turned there was another passenger in your face just trying to get out of the way or find a seat.
The boarding process was also miss-managed by the staff - not Jet2 people, think it was Swissport staff(?). Herded all the passengers at the same time to the bussing lounge downstairs. Resulting in a massive queue on the stairs and once again herded us onto the bus until it was full. They did get the special assistance passengers on first, which was a good move although it took ages to do that.
All in all, I have never been so glad to get on a plane, there was actually more room!
one of the worst if not the worst airport in the EU..
one of the worst if not the worst airport still operating in Europe, as if you arrive at a neglected african country, no passenger steps, planes park away and there , the good old boiling hot bus, like sardines despite COVID, you just walk into a labyrinth of passages, collect your bag and off you go...for the departure on 18/5/22 an absolute chaos, with public announcements so loud to be heard in Santorini, a chaos which is beyond any description, exit A7 with one dangerously broken seat, public announcement stuck screaming group one and two, group one and two, group one and two, 15 mins to walk down the stairs like sardines, up you go on the bus and finally on board... a disgraceful experience alltogether as if you are in the 50s...at Athens again the good old bus, first bag started at 12.58 on the carousel, and my bag, arrived at 13.40 that is one whole hour from landing time, parked away from terminal, 40 mins to one hour for the baggage to arrive, the bus, though there was only one other domestic flight from Mykonos at Athens vast airport, the only one in
the EU without any moving walkways for passengers, walk a whole kilometre from entrance to conveyor belts. Unbelievable....all this in such a tourist country !!!!!!!
