Defective vehicle - disappointing assistance
Picked up a Peugeot 208 at the Edinburgh City branch (Haymarket Terrace) on 6 May. The tyre pressure warning light was already on when I got the keys. I checked the pressures at a petrol station shortly after, all seemed fine, so I carried on — figured wrongly it was a sensor issue and Hertz wouldn't hand over a car that wasn't safe to drive.
Day and a half later, both tyres on the left side blow out on a mountainous Highlands road. Not exactly the trip we'd planned.
I had to stop on a dangerous mountain roadside. When I called roadside assistance, the first call I got bounced from one agent to another and ended up on a voicemail robot (exactly the definition I had of "emergency assistance"). On the second call, someone finally took my details but couldn't find my insurance file. A Hertz agent rang back later but couldn't explain clearly what would happen or what it would cost me, so I had to ring assistance a third time to find out if anyone was actually coming. Was also told that if the mechanic couldn't fix it on the spot the car would have to be towed to Glasgow Airport at my expense (£700+), despite having the "Super Cover" insurance bundled by default into my contract.
Several hours stranded with no warning triangle and no hi-vis vest in the car either, which was its own little surprise. I know it's not mandatory in the UK, but it's pretty odd that an international rental company doesn't include such cheap and basic kit. On a mountain roadside it would have been very welcome. I had to drive a long distance on the damaged tyre to reach a safe parking area — there was nowhere safe to stop on that stretch of road.
The mechanic eventually came, replaced both tyres on site (I had to pay upfront), reset the warning. 10 minutes back on the road, light came back on. Still on when I returned the car a week later.
The tyre cost was deducted from my final bill, which is something. But the Super Cover charge and the broader handling of the situation are more than disappointing. I emailed Hertz the day after the incident asking for a replacement vehicle, since the warning was still on. No reply. Customer Relations have been completely silent since I filed a formal complaint a week ago.
Will update this depending on how it gets resolved.
They did not provide the car booked!
They did not provide the car or category of vehicle we had booked. At pick up, we had no choice but to accept as they had no other cars, but upon complaining after the rental they insisted they category of vehicle was the same as we had booked (they gave us an SUV when we had booked a large MPV). It seems that they can decide whichever vehicle fits into each class as they see fit, and refuse to see logic or clear practical differences between the cars, and then just insist they are correct. They refused my request of a refund. Do not book with Hertz.
Hertz247 support rubbish cant change my…
Hertz247 support rubbish cant change my number as its in use. I literally own the thing! Yet they dont ask for proof of ownership. They just say sorry no can do lol. What a joke.
AVOID!
AVOID!! Used them once a year ago for a house move, paid in full. Van was returned with a full tank and in the same condition it was collected in, now a year later they think theyre entitled to take money from me because they think I owe them it when I dont!
Shocking car hire firm do not use - be warned.
Hired a car in Thailand via Hertz. Only to return home to find that I had been charged for twice as many days as I had the car. Tried to sort it out via their website and email but wasn't able to and was advised to go back to Hertz in Thailand. Never again with Hertz - should have looked at the the terrible reviews before hand. Only went with Hertz despite being more expensive than local operators as I assumed I was dealing with an international outfit with a reputation. Oh how wrong I was - lesson learned .
Tried to book a van hire online
Tried to book a van hire online, paid but got no payment confirmation, no email, no text message. Then a few weeks later they charged me for no reason or no service. Called customer service only to tell me to chat with a chat bot which leads you in circles endlessly.
I will never use Hertz ever again, absolutely crap company.
Do not use Hertz
Do not use Hertz - no support available!
We’ve arrived to collect a van from B&Q Coventry to find a flat tyre - no help or replacement van offered and won’t cancel or refund the rental!
DO NOT USE HERTZ.
DO NOT USE HERTZ.
I was quoted £445 and ended up paying £750 as tax was not included in original price. I also paid a late return fee of £50. I was late as I could not find anywhere to drop off the car as Hertz was closed. Eventually found out I had to go to Dollar. Totally unimpressed and feel cheated.
If I could leave no stars I would
If I could leave no stars I would! Vehicle was not where they said and I had to hunt it down with the GPS. Of course I couldn’t end the rental because it wanted to be taken back to the correct location. My car was there, what was I supposed to do? Get a bus back to it?? Customer service is absolutely useless and moves at a glacial pace. Never ever again!
To add insult to injury, they slapped on a late fee because their app is absolutely terrible!
I rented a car from Hertz, never again
I rented a car from Hertz and filmed a video with photos BEFORE driving the car, clearly showing the condition of the vehicle. After returning the car, they sent me an extra bill for damages that were already there before I even touched the car.
When I contacted them, they said my evidence was not good enough - even though I had exactly what they claimed to need: time-stamped video and photos taken before the rental started.
This feels like a scam. They add damage charges to customers' bills and then make it almost impossible to prove your innocence.
Stay away if you value your money.
Always Always get the attendant to inspect the vehicle with you at return
Good pickup, but at return the attendent wouldnt inspect the car with me. He said he would do it later. That was a mistake. Now I have a charge of £200 for a scratched alloy. I have a video of the pre-existing damage, so hopefully Hertz customer service will sort this out, and I can update this review. I rent regularly, and this is a new experience from an established hire company.
Update - an unresponsive telephone number at the Bristol Airport Hertz desk, and no response from customer services with respect to my email.
Update - 2 days later and no response from customer services...
Poor App. Lost a hour of hire.
I went to pick van up however had a issue with my app. To access the van, contacted support on chat, was not helpful,
Eventually got access to van. After repeated tries.
I was a hour late, and behind, in meeting, I was offered a free hour but was late for my appointment meeting.
Then I noticed I had as charged more than my quote?
Rented a car from the airport
Rented a car from the airport, and was good swift service. Returned to another airport and service was a little slower and office so busy. But other than that, good service
Charged twice and no communication
Paid in full when booked car hire for Orlando, once I’ve dropped Car off they decided to charge me another £1000. Impossible to get hold of and I have sent several emails with them explaining how much my car hire was, not explaining why they’ve charged me a separate amount. I’m now having to go through the credit card which is time-consuming and unnecessary. Will never use this company again.
Picked up a car from Birmingham Airport…
Picked up a car from Birmingham Airport all the staff at the counter were very obliging and friendly. Served by Jack he was super efficient and explained our rental in great detail. Jack made sure we were happy before we left. We definitely use Hertz again and recommend it to family and friends. It was a super smooth process. The car Jack gave us. was upgraded with a very reasonable price very happy with the service Jack gave us.
Hertz Bordeaux should be avoided
Hertz Bordeaux should be avoided. Within 3 minutes of dropping off the vehicle they had emailed me with the following additional charges: damage charge of €475.30, €262.10 loss of use charge, and €50.00 administration fee. This is for a vehicle that already 15 different existing damages, some very extensive. The photographic "proof" was anything but. The alleged damage was significant but clearly came from a different vehicle since the marking on the alloys was entirely different. Extremely untrustworthy supplier, do not use. Used Sixt 2 weeks before who by contrast get top marks!
Please don't use them,
Please don't use them,
They have thieves as a receptionist and they took £120 from my account without my permission as extra fee.
I called the bank and returned the money and they took another amount again, they stole my bank card details.
Hertz Malta are to be avoided at all…
Hertz Malta are to be avoided at all costs. We were accused of very minor scartches to a hire car which we could prove happened before our rental period and charged for 780 euros for the cost of fixing the car ( which was covered in marks) and for the loss of use which is a blatent fraudulant lie. They have moderated their paperwork to keep the same amount but to change the lie showing the fraud commited. You may ask whyvwe let them get away with it? Well we paid extra to drop off out of hours due to early flight and wrongly assumed that - due to additoonal cost- someone would be there to meet us. The result: opportunity for the company to fraudulant do a check without us and ignore our evidence. Do not make the mistake that we did and go with another company.
AVOID Hertz Dubai
AVOID Hertz Dubai
Would have given 0 stars if it was possible.
AVOID HERTZ Dubai at all costs, hired car in DECEMBER 2025. Then 3 months later in MARCH our Credit Card was used fraudulently used by this company staff. They obviously keep your card information long after your hire. Will show as (Al Futtaim) which is umbrella of Hertz.
Many emails later, still trying to get my money back, had to cancel my credit card. What a bunch of scammers 😢
Actually same happened when hired from Hertz Dublin a year ago, so please do be care with Hiring.
I would avoid Hertz at all cost.
I would avoid Hertz at all cost.
If there are ANY issues, they will simply hide behind "you signed for this in the terms and agreements"
They swapped out the car for me on my day of arrival, called it an upgrade, well i didn't want an upgrade, but i'm in a foreign country, i HARDLY have room to barter when i'm on a schedule. So when i raised this at the end they hid behind, well you signed for it.
Further to this; i got a parking charge for 9.00 that they added a 30.00 fine ontop of, when i said to them i paid for the parking in the app that the parking site wanted, they said "dispute it with the company theirselves as they don't communicate with the companies" i said how can they just charge me without them communicating to me first, or the company, again they fell back on "you agreed to this in the terms and agreements". So despite me PAYING for the parking and PROVING it to them, they still said their hands were tied.
I left my expensive sunglasses in my car when i rushed from the car to the airport (This is on me and is my fault) but when i asked Hertz to check their CCTV or whether they took an inventory of the car whilst it was cleaned, they completely declined to assist and just said "nothing in the car sorry". They then refused to provide an inventory or CCTV of the car being "cleaned". Lets be real, someone just pocketed the glasses and they couldn't be bothered to look into it.
Basically, if everything goes well, good luck to you, if there is ANY and i mean ANY issue, you have 0 chance of getting it resolved.
They will just hide behind T&C's and then ignore you.
