I’ve never had such a frustrating and stressful experience applying for a job — and it’s all because of HireRight. I’ve gone through background checks many times before, and no company has ever made the process this difficult or dragged it out this long. It’s been almost a month, and I’m still stuck on something that should’ve been simple: verifying my high school education from over 15 years ago.
Even though I submitted my transcripts and diploma, HireRight insists on calling the school directly. I provided the correct number multiple times, but the rep keeps calling the wrong line and then claims she’s “unable to verify.” I took matters into my own hands and called the school’s transcript office directly — they told me they’ve faxed everything over, and said this happens all the time with HireRight. In their words: “They never can get it right.”
Even after the transcript office faxed everything, HireRight continued to claim they couldn’t verify the information. It's like they’re not even reviewing the documents they’re being sent or they’re missing basic steps in their own process. Meanwhile, my job opportunity is on the line because of their delays and incompetence.
This entire situation feels borderline FCRA-violating — asking for sensitive, unnecessary personal information and then mishandling it, with no accountability. They’re holding up people’s employment for reasons that are completely avoidable. In today’s economy, that’s unacceptable.
HireRight is careless, inconsistent, and a liability to anyone trying to move forward in their career. If your employer uses them, prepare for delays, stress, and unnecessary hurdles. This process should not be this hard.

Most terrible BGV company I've ever seen! I would give a -5( negative 5) if that was allowed!
They know what documents they need to do BGV
- Monday ask 1 document
-Tuesday ask another
-Wednesday Ask another
-On Thursday ask me what is my legal name???Ridiculous you have my ID, SSN, And asking me this?
-Friday ask another document
Then ask me for my birthday certificate in my home country!
They will take 1 month to do basic verification other comapnies take 2-3 days to complete!

They couldn't confirm info thats publicly available in state records, and they flagged my LLC as having a different registration date from recent consulting work (yes, people usually register their companies first and then do business with them later). I became concerned by the amount of private data they asked for and found out that they've been sued for FCRA violations. Make sure you document everything and take screenshots.

I would like to leave 0 star, this company it is very slow, I got to postpone my start day, because they took so long to complete and verified the information. I never will recommend this company.

I would say make sure your resume is up to date before going into interviews. The employer will use this to upload to HireRight. Confirm start and end dates with employers before completing the HireRight forms. They will only take corporate phones numbers and the numbers need to be registrar under the corporation. If at all possible already have a letterhead from your company with role, start and end dates listed. For current employers have recent paycheck available- you can upload these documents with employer information before submitting. No mobile numbers or emails. Made it difficult when business only excepted fax numbers. They'll say emails were sent out to notify you of information needed-NOT. Check twice of day if your form was flagged with information needed. If you are having a hard time completing documentation reach out to the employer to see if they can help with the process. Once you submit the form you're not able to review any information. I did mark as poor on the survey. And it seems they can't multitask which makes the process longer.

HireRight just insults candidates nothing else they do.I could give 0 stars if possible.
illogical document requests delaying process completion which could be done within a week. Contact the HR person with email provided and thats it.
Asking manager details whom worked with 8-10 yrs before. Already shared HR details and experience letter.
What the hell you need to check with manager. As per my knowledge he even left industry and now work as a farmer. Why the hell then HR details are asked. HR is the one who confirms employment. Also Why the hell you need my sensitive information like payslips. Theses things are confidential when we sign offer letter and they ask for all stupid nonsense. What is the guarantee that Hireright does not leak info. When u people cannot work with candidates background simple things.
I decline my offer with the company hiring me and using Hireright for background verification to avoid harassment. i chose other offer though with a bit less salary but peace of mind.

It couldn’t be worse! They are asking us to contact a university’s Human Resources department to request that they send an email, even though it’s against the university’s policy. Moreover, when you speak to them on the phone, they don’t seem to understand English, act as if they didn’t hear you, and hang up!

Absolutely ridiculous. They are incompetent and lazy. They expect you to carry out the background check for them - uploading excessive amounts of documents from over 10 years ago such as payslips, enrolment letters etc. Absolute time wasters

Reply from HireRight
Be VERY careful with this company. When uploading documents, it is important to fully redact anything sensitive. If you make a mistake and upload something with sensitive information, there is NO way to have those documents removed and/or replaced.
When I asked to speak to a supervisor, they just hung up on me.

An absolute waste of time. Individual emails for each part of the required information. They also do not review the documents sent to them, as they had the information they were looking for. Ultimately the candidate who is being hired does all the work for them. It has taken a couple of days to source all the information that they require. I will most definitely steer clear of this organisation.

Terrible company. My employer, unfortunately, went with HireRight for background check, and they wasted my time by requesting one missing item per day, and the *not required* fields are, to no one's surprise, required. They rely on the materials you sent instead of doing any work. This company should stop being a leech and pay people to actually do your job

Awful service and takes far too long

Reply from HireRight
They want you to do the background check yourself. They request your paystubs from multiple employers from decades ago as if you kept those around, and then ask you to get in touch with the employer and find someone who can provide additional records. Never had a background check I had to do myself, I could have just sent my last few paystubs to the company that was hiring me and saved so much of my own time

Edited my earlier review. My difficulty was the communication with agents. They don't answer questions even if asked multiple times and on top of that start blaming me about not noticing some 7 days window. Never had such hard time to get my background check done. After some back and forth, I was able to get it done. But, it was done by pushing someone in my company who said that it is on me to check the dashboard everyday and provide things as there are no emails for missing/rejected things. Hardest part is if one of your W2 is missing, there is no way around it. I provided tax transcripts as directed but still they said it is unverified job. They wanted some specific document with company name and dates of employment, but a letter from my previous manager on letterhead is not enough. They could not say what document can substitute that requirement. I think Hireright believe that anyone who somehow cannot find an old W2 is a fraud.

I had to deal with Hireright for my background check last year. It was absolutely horrible experience all in all. They took long time to get anything done and in the end gave me wrong information about my status being completed even though it was not! This meant that I started my job over a month later (and was without any salary) because of their inexperience in what they are doing.

HireRight to hire this company is to HireWrong they "are" ineffective, inefficient and a master of none! ;0(

Service is very poor both to their client companies who hire them and the employee candidates who have to do their job for them. They charge me for their service and require my employees to have to reach out and get documents/reports that cost the candidates money. So they are being paid from both parties in essence and too lazy and cheap to pay for access to the large databases that other similar companies use to check candidates application information. Don't hire this company if you want your onboarding process to run smoothly and cost effective for all. I lost a candidate because they said they refuse to pay $180 worth of college transcript/verification codes via salary.com etc. If a company is using them, the company is cheap. Move on to a better employer who doesn't dump these cost on you!

I left the military with TS clearance, so my background check should have been so easy for them. Instead, it took this company several weeks to verify JUST my professional licenses and degrees. For one of my degrees, they spent over a week denying it because the school had changed their school designation of my second master’s degree to a “post master’s certificate” (change date was unclear) vs master’s as listed on my diploma (which HireRight had been provided). I had to call the school myself and get a letter generated to clarify, because they couldn’t seem to do it themselves. They then kept sending me missing documents emails after they essentially had EVERYTHING from day 1. I called the company and the lady kept blaming their internal review team. Bottom line, if I were running a business, I would not use hireright and would go another way with a more reputable company.

I would give these 1 star if i could! Im from the uk and a job i have received use them for background checks!
All information submitted everything they asked for, theyve come back to me 3x now saying they cant accept it? Even though its what they asked for in black and white.
Im currently self employed, have sent all my tax returns with name, address, etc UTR code and they must be the only company in the world who apparently cant accept this? Theres no more proof to give. A tax returns is definite proof my business existed, theyve also asked for a end date, but there isnt an end date as im still self employed till these checks go through. If you dare miss any jobs out against your cv to they pull you, they asked for certifications off college 15 year ago, which ive never had in any job and ive worked in government roles, and there background checks were simpler than this.
This is a very intrusive background check that i honestly dont like and its making me want to pull out the job i was so looking forward to starting. Incompetent company

Absolutely terrible service. It's been 3 weeks and I still haven't gotten past the first step in the process. My social security verification form has been rejected 6 times, with this last time being for "poor handwriting" and "scribbles". I have no clue how to get this form submitted if it's being judged on handwriting. I've never had a complaint about handwriting in my life. Further, the investigator had complaints about specific letters like my "n's" and my "r's". I am so upset.
