At Hope Macaulay, we blend innovation with tradition to create feel-good knitwear that is handcrafted and mindfully made. We proudly celebrate local craftsmanship in our home of Northern Ireland. Hope Macaulay is a family-run, woman-owned contemporary luxury fashion brand, founded by textiles designer Hope Macaulay on the beautiful North Coast of Northern Ireland. Just two years after graduating, Hope Macaulay emerged in 2020 as an inspiring, slow fashion, global brand, hailed by the fashion world as dopamine dressing. What began as Hope knitting alone in her bedroom has expanded into a team of 20 skilled knitters working from home across Northern Ireland, helping keep the traditional cottage industry alive. Hope is best known for her creation of the signature statement piece, the Colossal Knit Cardigan. Unable to find pieces to make from other’s knitting patterns, she developed her own method, just by using her hands. By mastering a unique knitting technique that uses no needles, Hope has trained her knitters to create her designs, her favourites made from sustainably sourced materials like luxury merino wool. Hope’s energetic and surreal designs have been featured in major fashion publications, such as Vogue, GQ, Sports Illustrated, Vanity Fair, and the New York Times, and have adorned celebrities including Gigi Hadid, Naomi Osaka, Jennifer Hudson, Black Pink’s Lisa and Rosalía. Her influence and dedication to mindful, local craftsmanship has also earned her a spot on the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Despite the rapid growth and international acclaim, Hope remains dedicated to her roots in Northern Ireland. She continues to support local women by providing them with meaningful work and maintaining a close-knit supply chain. Hope Macaulay is a brand that not only celebrates wearable pieces of art, but also embodies a heartfelt commitment to community and sustainability.

Beautiful garment and well worth the wait. A very very happy recipient
Just wow! Have received my cardigan this morning and can only say how delighted I am with it. An incredible, unique item, even better than the photos. Thank you so much, especially the knitters who do an amazing job.
Despite slightly longer delivery time the wait is well worth it!!! What an amazing piece of art work! Honestly I am besotted & love it so very much. X The quality, texture, quality & skill/design is amazing
The order process was great. Used FedEx for delivery.
Everything went smoothly.
Worth the wait for.
Absolutely gorgeous Bruna colossal knit cardi. It will compliment my entire wardrobe. So thrilled.
Hope Macaulay kept me informed throughout the wait via email.
The knit was packaged carefully and came complete with a little pile comb. Remember to buy your knit storage bag prior to delivery though!
Will definitely be ordering another knit later in the year. …..probably a jumper.
Beautiful cardigan. Even more gorgeous than I was expecting from the online photos. The delivery time was quite long (about 10 weeks) but it was worth waiting for something which is hand made to order & is of such high quality!

I was disappointed at the packaging it came in after seeing the videos in a lovely box mine was in a cheap looked like used cardboard box with brown tape all around. The label was quite blurry with care instructions. I wouldn’t buy again I had to try and sew the end back in don’t think it was worth £150 I was so disappointed 😢

Ordered a cardigan, I had seen on Traitors! This which was specially knitted with a lead time of 8 weeks. It was shipped literally 8 weeks to the day. Packed lovely, with a nice message in a strong box. Absolutely love my cardigan and didn’t disappoint.

I purchased the Whimsy Patchwork Cardigan knitting pattern after a request from my friend for a cardigan similar to Jade on Traitors. I knit a lot and was shocked at the cost of a pattern download being £15 - I have never paid as much as that for a pattern especially one that I print myself to use. I thought with how viral the cardigans have gone, it would be worth it.
I was wrong. The pattern was overly complicated and littered with typos. What should have been a very easy knit became frustrating.
Then came the ‘pattern updates’ - one was sent through and was exactly the same, then when I had nearly finished my cardigan, a second updated pattern arrived in my inbox which had addressed most of the typos and also had completely different instructions for the i-cord edge of the cardigan which I had already finished.
I emailed to ask for a refund of the pattern cost and received a reply after my chaser email which basically said frustrations understood, but no refund on patterns.
Not even a gesture of goodwill or anything. Really very poor customer care. A refund of £15 is probably 3 rows of one of their handknits. And thank god I sourced my own chunky wool rather than using theirs which is again extortionate and nowhere near as hard wearing as the wool I purchased for £26 total cost.
I was really shocked as I did not expect the customer care to be so terrible.

Whilst I am waiting for my custom cardi I managed to purchase a ready made sample which was delivered within about ten days - arrived in a firm sturdy box wrapped so beautifully with tissue paper and included a message, as well as the name of the person who had made it. I am enjoying wearing my ribbon jumper and grateful for all the comments!

Customer service and support is excellent. Fit and style of the cardigan wasn't. Shorter than in the visuals on the website, fit isn't flattering, despite the model in the photos being a similar size, it wasn't a true representation. Packaged it up and paid the money to get it back for a refund. All in all, cost me £40 to try something on that wasn't a good fit.

My experience with a Hope Macaulay cardigan.
After just three wears, the cardigan has become essentially unwearable due to extreme shedding, felting and pilling. Fibres are coming off heavily and transferring onto sofas, clothing, and other people when worn.
I contacted Hope Macaulay and sent photographs showing the condition of the cardigan. I was told the shedding was “minor” and “to be expected” and my request for a refund was refused.
Because the garment deteriorated so quickly and we couldn’t reach a resolution, I have now opened a chargeback with my bank and the matter is currently being reviewed.
I’m including photos here so people can see the level of shedding and felting themselves.
Since this happened, several experienced knitters have also explained to me that garments made from unspun wool roving can be prone to this type of heavy shedding and felting, and that an item made of roving wool is not fit for purpose. Which has been helpful context in understanding what may have happened here.
These gorgeous cardigans are meant to be wearable art for a glossy insta pic. They are not meant to be worn more than once or twice.
Posting my experience so others can make their own informed decisions.
