Cancelled course last minuet
They cancelled my 5 day course due to "venue issues" and rebooked me on the same course 60 miles away on a Friday afternoon when the course was due to start on the Monday morning. While I appreciate it may have been out of their control, no offer of hotel assistance or discounts were made as a gesture of good will. Hotels would have cost me a further £400, as someone who's self employed, this was not what I expected from a trusted provider. Now I have a week of no work and no training.

The PASMA Course Saved My Life!
I was in the process of buying a Scaffold Tower to undertake repairs around my business premises. Unsure about the components and safety aspects. After lots research on Google, I learned about 'PASMA' (the Prefabricated Access Suppliers' & Manufacturers' Association Ltd); so ultimately, I booked myself on a PASMA course delivered by HSS - IN SHORT IT HAS SAVED MY LIFE!
Mine was in Manchester - Army Reserve Centre, 33 Signals Squadron, Manchester M14 5LF. The instructor (ex-Army [he must be Royal Yorks!?]), was absolutely brilliant. I can’t thank him enough for stressing all the safety aspects, working components, but especially tower certification and the BS safety standards! I also learned about the far superior 'Advanced Guard Rail' system (AGR). HSS use BOSS Towers (the industry leader - but expensive), so you will know what quality and safety is!
I already had bought a BPS 'Trade Master Professional Scaffold Towers - 7.4m' (@ £1,088.99 - CR6 9PQ), already delivered, but I did not want to use it until I had completed this training (now I have reviewed them on 'Feefo' separately - so will not repeat it all).
However, it was absolutely unsafe to use with fake certification claims (TUV) and intellectual property, such as an invalid UK Patent! It had been delivered damaged (not visible until unpacked - which took an hour).
The PASMA course gave me the confidence to inspect the tower for safety and damaged components; and I was shocked that I found the following:
1) The two trapdoor platforms are each missing a securing bracket on one side.
2) Two horizontal braces (red) each have a damaged locking securing bracket.
3) Two of the six rung frames have quite badly bent upright ‘joint’s.
4) A locking bolt and it’s securing chain appears to have simply sheared off in transit and I cannot use one wheel and hence the whole tower.
Ultimately it was returned and I was refunded with the help of Citizens Advice and my bank (chargeback). I don’t know if they were super helpful or embarrassed?
BPS have defended the quality of their product (on Feefo); and unfortunately, Bromley Borough Trading Standards, never got back to me after a complaint was passed on to them by Citizens Advice.
I then bought a BOSS styled AGR Tower from Lewis Access (scaffold-tower.co.uk SE6 3BX @ £2,844.08); their product at first was far superior (50.8mm aluminium scaffold tubing), but as I progressed building the platform stages, some of the AGR rails and red & blue braces - SLIPPED - now at only 3 or 4 metres high, your pants still go brown!
My towers’ working height is 10.7m!! There is no way, I would even attempt that in its current unsafe state.
Even for the first two stages assembled, I have used two scaffold ties (I am on the seafront, so the scaffold is extra safe from unexpected gusts of wind!
All I can say that if you are considering buying a Scaffold Tower, firstly read the up-to date warnings and information on the PASMA website, then DO THIS COURSE.
I cannot praise it any higher, just stay safe!

Excellent course
Great confined space course today. Alistair was an excellent trainer—very knowledgeable, engaging, and made the course enjoyable rather than boring. The training was well structured with good breaks, and we learned a lot of valuable information that will help keep us safe when working in confined spaces. Highly recommended.
