Disappointed

This used to be one of my favourite small businesses. Such a quaint little shop with really lovely unusual merchandise that you dont find on the high street however, after years of shopping there a small incident has put me off going again. It really is only a small issue but the principle of it made me question my choices.
I purchased over 1% items on my last visit and when I got home one was missing from the bag (but was on the receipt) it was a small value item, only £5.99 and it was handed over the counter last as I was waiting on confirmation from my mother that she wanted me to buy it. I realised it must have been left on the counter so would go back the next day.
When I went back they looked at the counter and couldn't see anything so said it must have been put back to stock and that was the end of that. No checking the cctv, no checking the stock levels etc, I was just expected to buy another as it was my loss.
If something is left behind by a customer it should be logged and kept to one side to see if the customer reclaim, not just put back to stock so they get to sell it twice.
I was really kind of miffed with the whole thing.
