Indie Campers stole my deposit. And they'll do the same to you
What the ….
We arrived at Indiecampers just outside of Paris, there were no other customers and after 15 minutes of computer checking we got the keys to our rental camper. We had been “upgraded” that is to say that after we explicitably said we wanted a short model they gave us a long model.
Unfortunately the upgrade wasn’t what we were used to from the companies we had previously rented from in other cities/countries. It was filthy. In and out. So we decided to do a through check. NO xtra gas’s bottle which we had paid for, most of the kitchen utensils either broken or missing, the stove was only working on one element. WC and waste water was full. Although only driven 16000 km it was full of dents and one of the lights was torn off.
They cleaned it while we waited, which ment that we had to revise our days route.
Off we drove, finally. After a day to calm down we had a pleasant holiday and we began to joke about indieservice. We were to catch a morning flight home so we had arranged a drop of at 7.30 by phone. Upon arrival we found the gate locked and another couple with their drop off camper in panic as their 07.00 appointment had not shown. They had an Uber waiting patiently to take them to the airport. Time went and nobody showed up. No phone response. Another customer arrived at 8.00 and still a locked gate. We gave our keys to the other customer. And took our uber to the airport. What else could we do?!
I just hope that you, as a customer, can be the wiser by this rating and I certainly hope that Indiecampers consider weather they have the right staff for the job in Paris.
I would not recommend this company for hiring your campervan. We rented a Mercedes campervan from the Marseille depot. The van is suitable for 4 people, apparently. We don't agree so luckily there were only us two. They are small and cramped and with no A/C. None of IC's models have it, we were told. Not ideal for the South of France in 35 degrees. We should have checked, but as we've hired small RVs in the States which all have A/C, we assumed IC's would have it connected to the battery.
On the 2nd last day of our holiday we found a small screw in one of the tyres. Even public roads are not always great in France - we had not been off-road, just driving on normal streets and side streets. We had a mechanic help us change the tyre as we couldn't find the jack. He offered to repair the tyre, cheaply. We decided to be honest and tell the staff what had happened at check-out, leaving them to repair it/replace it and let us know the cost. The van was exactly the same as ours at home in the UK - a top-of-the-range tyre for that model is £120 including fitting. We were gutted to see, when we got home, that IC had taken 449 Euros out of our deposit! For one tyre! We have complained, and as it's impossible to speak to a human being all they have done is send us a schedule of charges. No personal response. The money is gone, and all we can do is warn other potential customers off Indie Campers. They are greedy and unprofessional, and worst of all they don't actually care. The vans are not cheap to hire. None come with AC, the bedding packs are tatty, old and insubstantial. The seats were stained. To be charged 4 x the actual cost of a tyre is horrible! We were gutted. On FB there is a group called Indie Campers Ripped Me Off. It has 1.4k members. What does that tell you?
They charged us 543€ after giving us an "all good" mark regarding the vehicle statement.
After we contested, they promised us our money back but it was all bluff.
We're still fighting for our money till this moment.
We rented a van for use and it cost us around €400. we gave back the van and it was all good. Three days later they took an amount of €500 from our bank account and tried to withdraw another €1000. Thank god our bank notifed us!!! Now we're battling to get our €500 back.
Please avoid it; it's a scam!
Firstly I have to say, we had a fantastic holiday in our van, we drove all over France, into the alps, and into Germany, and our vehicle did not put a foot wrong. It was easy to drive, with plenty of power.
We slept well on the bed, it was comfortable, lots of room for the two of us(we had a 5 berth Atlas Knaus van)
The hot water/ heating system worked well and heated up the water quickly. The fridge worked well, kept everything cold, once we got to grips with it. No issues with the gas. We did a fair bit of wild camping too, so relied on the fresh water, the gas for cooking and heating the water, and the waste system.
Having read the previous reviews there is a few things I would say.
Yes its far out of Paris. However We took the RER to Mitry- Claye. Took about 40 mins from the centre of Paris. Cost 10 euros. Would be a similar cost for airport RER with one change. We then used Bolt app to get a Taxi to the location. Even on a Sunday morning we managed this. Cost was a 12.90 euros.
We arrived early, but wasn't an issue. Yes we were charged a security deposit, even thought we were 'Fully Paid Up' This is standard, for any hire company, car or van, and it was quite clear on your booking info. Read the small print people!
Yes the van had external damage, but was superficial. Some idiot had not realised the width of the van. It was cosmetic and didn't affect the vehicle performance. The only thing was the looks we got from other van people, who thought we had done it 😂
I guess in a busy summer season it's hard to replace everything immediately.
At the end of the day, you check everything prior to leaving the depot, but you should do this with any hire vehicle. Things go wrong, sensors fail. but these can be working one moment and not the next.
There was a few minor issues internally such as rattling bathroom door and fly screen/ blinds missing clips, but surprisingly we found these in the van and fixed. Not a big issue.
Some idiot had broke the freezer door, and wasn't able to be repaired. We just didn't use the freezer. Did it affect us... No
Was it clean. Well yes, but was it as clean as if was my own van, no, but it took a quick clean to get it ok. It definitely went back cleaner than it left.
The young girl who checked us in , came with the wrong bedding, but hey not a biggy to be honest.
The hose we were given had an attachment which would couple to a tap which had a garden hose attachment and we were given an additional hose with no attachments. The first aire we arrived in had a different tap. What a disaster. All it meant was a visit to a Super U for a connector set, and we bought a coupling attachment to join both hoses.
The customer service/ mechanical team were contactable by What's App/email. I used this after first speaking to a customer service person via the website help chat. We spoke to them re the oil level on the van, and to find out which oil to buy incase had to top up. I have my own driving business, so had been keeping an eye on it, as anyone would sensibly do. The trouble with vans is the sensor in the engine fluctuates depending on how level the van is when parked up. I got good service from them, even speaking to them late at night on a Saturday night.
When returning to the depot, we got great service with the team and manager taking time to speak to us, and as how our holiday was , first and foremost. They listened to the points we had recorded. We did not feel as if paying lip service to these points.. They offered to cover the small costs we incurred buying extra bits we needed. They returned our deposit right away even though a small bit of previously damaged bumper had fallen off that morning. We felt valued customers
Would we hire from them again, Absolutely yes.
If I could give them 0 stars I would.
I rented a camper and within 1km I discovered that the brakes were faulty. I immediately returned to the depot and was refused a replacement van. 2 days later the Brakes failed completely and Indie Campers left me stranded at the side of the road for 24 hours. Eventually I left the keys with a local business and found alternative accommodation. Indie campers did not refund me for the cost of the alternative accommodation, instead they tried to charge me an extra £500 for abandoning the veichle. I disputed this charge and eventually got my £500 back
We have been charged £1859 for a small dent in the roof that we have no recollection of. At drop off we were told the van was fine and we'd be refunded our full deposit. Several days later, this huge cost was taken from our credit card. When I try to ask for a breakdown of the repair, I'm told they can't give me one - only the total cost. We are so shocked, angry and upset. Our holiday is ruined.
