Standards and Legal Duty of Care
It has been reported in the local newspapers that Brimhams Active will
temporarily be taking over from IHL in September 2024. Apparently some
improvements to Selby Leisure Centre have already taken place by this company there. Notably
Brimhams Active website prominently display their 'Safeguarding and Equality'
policies as well as their stance to a legal duty of care for the customer's physical
and mental health and wellbeing and ensures that staff are fully aware of the
implications of such policies. One advert for a job reads : 'In carrying out the
duties and responsibilities of this job, it is required that
staff positively implement all current Brimhams Active Ltd’s policies and
regulations, and Codes of Practice at all " I believe IHL is a an accredited
member of Sport England who highly recommend the abovementioned policies
as ’good practice’ too. Worryingly I have not been able to find any references to
any policies on SLC's website nor any signposting within the building. Having
experienced intimidating behaviour in a pump session and witnessed others
being intimidated in zumba sessions, I have come to the conclusion that I had no other option but to resign my
membership from SLC as my experiences have deeply affected my emotional
wellbeing. It's a real shame as the choreography in the zumba and aqua zumba sessions is excellent. Recommendations for the abovementioned policies and for a specific safeguarding officer have been passed on to management at SLC. I can only hope that essential improvements will be made as soon as possible for the sake of the inclusivity and wellbeing of all the customers there.
