Reply from JD Gyms - Greenock
I’ve trained at JD Gyms Greenock for years and have always loved the space, but I’m now at a point where I’m genuinely questioning whether this gym values women’s safety at all.
A few months ago, the glute drive and hyperextension machines were moved from their original, more private position to the single most exposed area of the entire gym — right beside the front entrance, directly under the mezzanine, and fully reflected in the mirror wall and glass staircase.
Anyone walking in the front door can see women and girls doing hip thrusts and hyperextensions. Members of the public passing the windows can see in. Anyone walking up the stairs can look directly down. Anyone on the mezzanine has a perfect elevated view. There is no privacy whatsoever during extremely vulnerable movements.
Multiple women, myself included feel incredibly uneasy or from what others have told me, have outright stopped using this equipment entirely because of how exposed and uncomfortable it feels. A number of us have even had to explain to younger girls (some as young as 14!) that they’re visible from the above angles, because they genuinely had no idea and are therefore vulnerable to being watched/ preyed upon.
We’ve raised this issue repeatedly. Staff have relayed our concerns to management. Even other male members have raised it. Even the social media complaints team escalated it to both the club manager and the area manager. And the response every single time has been: “there’s no problem.”
It is extremely concerning that neither the club manager nor the area manager see this as a safeguarding issue. I have to question whether people who cannot acknowledge something this basic should even be in managerial positions. To you and anyone else in the chain of command who may be reading this...imagine this was your daughter, wife, girlfriend, sister etc who was being perved on while trying to enjoy a workout, and hearing that those in charge actually cared so little and expected them to put up with it because they simply refused to reposition equipment? I imagine you would be upset? Sad that this is even a point that needs brought up, but alas here we are.
There is absolutely no practical reason for the machines to remain in this spot. They were fine where they originally were for years. Or be placed up behind the plate-loaded leg equipment in the back corner beside the singular boxing bag, where it could be more obscured and have more privacy. Nothing about the layout requires them to be placed at the gym’s most visible point. They did not exist there before. The gym done just fine before they were moved!
So the question is: why is it so important for them to stay here? Why is their placement being prioritised over member comfort and safety?
The experience of women in gyms is not the same as men’s. There is a reason women-only areas exist in so many facilities. JD Gyms Greenock is actively facilitating the very issue those spaces were created to protect us from.
It honestly feels like an incident needs to happen before anyone in a position of authority will acknowledge this concern at all...and even then I doubt that. And that is unacceptable.
It should not take a petition, which several of us are now considering, just to get a basic safeguarding concern taken seriously. We talk in the locker rooms. We know how many women and girls feel uncomfortable. We know the difference between normal gym visibility and being placed under a spotlight for no reason.
It is extremely frustrating that something so easy to fix is being so stubbornly ignored.
This gym could continue to be a safe, supportive place for so many of us, but right now this issue overshadows everything else it does well.
Please actually listen. We are not complaining for no reason. We are asking for basic consideration, privacy, and respect. Why are we paying memberships for a place that doesn't actually care about basic member safety over something so trivial!
If someone from the complaints team/ head office wishes to discuss this further in detail, I’m more than happy to provide my name and membership details privately to verify that this experience is legitimate.
Thank you.

I understand it's a 24/7 gym with reduced staff, but whether you visit first thing in the morning or late at night, the showers smell absolutely foul. They seriously need to be deep cleaned and bleached. The drain smell is beyond a joke. The water pressure is also pitiful.
They should also notify if they are going to turn off the sauna a full half hour before the changing rooms close. Most people only need 10-15mins sauna time. Closing that particular part so early is far from ideal.

Nice gym, well laid out. The only critism I could say was that the showers are a lukewarm

I’ve been coming to JD in Greenock since July 2022, and I haven’t looked back since I’ve joined. Plenty of space, equipment and staff so that it’s always organized and running smoothly at all times of the day. Plus it’s 24 hours now, great gym and staff are lovely!
I highly recommend JDGym Greenock, the equipment is excellent, the atmosphere is good and there’s never a need to wait for equipment!
The equipment is varied to cover a wide range of training styles they even have some specialised equipment to particularly suit strongman or powerlifting style training along side a vast amount of bodybuilding equipment!
The staff are friendly, helpful and easy to approach!
