Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 95 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many customers reported significant issues with the vehicles, including poor build quality, old models, and numerous defects such as non-working stoves, blocked sinks, and missing items. Reviewers frequently encountered mechanical problems like faulty brakes, non-functional heaters, and issues with electrical systems, which often led to breakdowns and ruined trips. The customer service was widely criticized for being unhelpful, unresponsive, and lacking follow-through, with many feeling that management did not take responsibility for the problems. Conversely, a small portion of people felt satisfied with their experience, noting friendly staff, easy pick-up and drop-off, and comfortable vehicles that were well-equipped and easy to drive. Some also appreciated the design and agility of certain campervan models, finding them suitable for their travel routes.

I WISH I HAD READ THESE REVIEWS BEFORE…

I wish I had read these reviews before renting ...

Expectations:

Jucy is a budget brand here in NZ, and it used to be ok. I often travel with budget operators and expect high Kms, and older vehicles that are clean but showing wear. In my experience the vehicles hired from these companies have always run well, with no issues. I also expect to have to go to a collection point for the vehicle a little way from the airport, it's a little time consuming but you know it's part of the deal and you just allow for it.

I have always received "good service" from budget rental car companies

e.g. pickup shuttles prompt enough, service agents to take money and pass you your contract and keys etc excellent (although there might be some wait time in a queue), drop off easy and all administration covered before you leave the depot.

My expectations were based on previous examples here in NZ and in Auckland in particular.

What I got:

1. NO transport from Auckland Airport to the depot after 3.30pm (and this was a week-day). While the booking documentation states it, we are not TOLD at time of booking / nor informed of the alternative arrangements. Also when booking the shuttle it allows you to select later times.

Bad systems
Bad comms
Bad organisation.

I was literally 'abandoned' at the airport in the pouring rain and in exceptionally high humidity. That was not nice.

2. NO refund for alternative transport to the depot

Luckily I managed to track down a customer rep who was on her way home from the office which closed at 3.30 pm, who told me I could get a taxi to the depot, and my car was outside the depot waiting for me. That they would refund the taxi fare.

I have chased them at least six times for this refund. It still has not arrived. The minimum taxi fare was $45 !! (or wait an hour for an uber to arrive in the rush hour rainy day traffic while pouring with sweat, very upset and stressed and now facing the rush hour which I had planned to avoid).

3. half way through my week's rental I realised that I needed to add an extra day. I arranged a day by phone easily. Given their payment policy on booking is a few weeks in advance I expected them to take payment from my credit card at that point. They did not. What business operates like that??!

Instead, they debited me (without the credit for the taxi fare on which I am still waiting) a whole month later.

I am a budget traveller and that significantly affected my financial planning for the next month.

4. The Suzuki Swift was fit for purpose, the veins on one of the air con vents were broken but that was not critical, and the acceleration felt as though it needed sorting out but that was not critical for my 'around town' purposes.

Jucy has seriously gone downhill since I used them a number of years ago. I can only hope they sort themselves out. Until then ...

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY - IT'S A COMPLETE JOKE!

Worst rental Company

This is the worst rental Company that I have ever tried. We got a van with illegal tires which we had to get checked because the steering wheel kept turning towards the left side when driving. The tire treads were totally worn out. We used two whole days calling with JUCY and around 12 calls with them alone to finally get our van fixed at the afternoon on the second day. But the main thing is that we talked with 5-6 different employees over the last two days and only 2 of them could do anything for us and not to say that one of the employees Said she booked us an appointment at a mechanic but when we arrived he had Never heard of the appointment. This is the worst costumer service and experience I have ever had. Get your act together because you are losing all your costumers.

DO NOT RENT FROM QUEENSTOWN LOCATION!!

DO NOT RENT FROM QUEENSTOWN LOCATION!!! Jucy sends them all the very old run down vans and keeps the newer nicer ones in Auckland. Ours had over 440,000km on it and we had a major safety issue with it. The transmission was not in order and we got stuck going uphill. The camper just stopped in the middle of the road and even with the pedal to the floor, we started going backwards! Traffic behind us had to try and get out of our way. Not a good feeling. We went back to Jucy as we were just a few minutes away and they gave us another van which was just as run down. We paid the same price as people renting from Auckland but had a very different vehicle. Stay away from them, not worth the cheaper prices

NEVER AGAIN BAD EXPERIENCE

Our experience with JUCY was extremely disappointing and negatively affected our South Island trip.
We arranged to pick up the van at 8:30am but didn’t receive it until 10:00am. While we were waiting, we noticed a stranger inside the van we had been allocated, looking through and moving our belongings around before the vehicle was handed over to us. This was very concerning and did not give us confidence in the security or preparation of the vehicle.
When we finally received the van, the fuel tank was only half full.
The issues continued once we started using it. The sink was completely blocked with screws, food scraps, bones, and debris. When I cleared it myself, a large amount of dirty water came back up. We were told that all water systems and toilets are checked between customers, but this clearly wasn’t done.
Soon after, the engine management light came on. We had paid for the “stress-free” cover, yet AA refused to come out. Instead, we had to go out of our way to find a garage. Eventually, we had to drive to Queenstown to swap the van.
Unfortunately, the replacement vehicle also had problems. One of the hobs didn’t work, and the sliding side door wouldn’t open from the inside — we had to exit through the rear of the van.
Because of these ongoing issues, we didn’t feel confident using the toilet or shower for the entire South Island trip, worried that something else might go wrong.
Overall, our experience with JUCY was very poor. The constant problems caused unnecessary stress and took away from what should have been an enjoyable travel experience. I would not use this company again.

Avoid this company! Faulty equipment and no customer service

We rented a van for 1 month and had many problems : faulty equipment in the van (broken fridge, leaking shower, leaking grey water tank, broken window, broken equipement). When our window (passenger side) stayed stuck in open position, despite contacting them many times, they never replied and we had to take care of everything. The last day, when we drop off the van, they didn't want to bring us to the airport with the shuttle (as it is written in the contract), they said they would reimburse the taxi but 4 months later, still no answer from them after 5 emails.
We definitely don't recommand this company !!!

DON’T USE

We had a very disappointing experience with JUCY in WA after hiring a Star RV van, which is supposed to be one of the higher-quality vehicles in their fleet.

To begin with, we had to wait over an hour past our booked time slot just to pick up the van, which was frustrating and set the tone for the rest of the trip.

From the moment we finally received it, there were multiple issues that significantly impacted our experience. The screen was cracked and was never repaired during our two-week hire. The key for the water tank snapped in half, the hot water stopped working towards the end of the trip when unplugged, the cruise control didn’t work, and the air conditioning unit leaked all over our bed.

The air conditioning leak was so bad that we had to book a last-minute hotel for two nights of our trip around Australia Day which was stressful, unexpected, and not how we planned to end our trip. On top of that, the glow plug warning light came on, creating further stress and uncertainty during our travels.

While we were eventually reimbursed around $900 for hotel costs and related expenses, the overall compensation offered was completely inadequate considering the number of issues and the disruption to our holiday.

This trip was meant to be enjoyable and stress-free, but instead it was filled with problems, inconvenience, and disappointment. Based on our experience, I would never recommend JUCY.

Absolutely terrible experience

Absolutely terrible experience with JUCY Rentals.

We picked up our campervan in Queenstown and after the very first night we had to seriously question how this vehicle was even allowed to be rented out. It was extremely dirty. We ended up spending more than three hours cleaning it ourselves, and over five buckets of filthy water came out. Even after all that effort, it still did not feel properly clean.

The campervan is clearly very old and poorly maintained. The kitchen unit is loose, the surfaces were greasy, and the bathroom is heavily moldy. This is completely unacceptable especially considering we paid €3,800 for this rental. For that kind of money, you expect at least basic hygiene and a vehicle in decent condition.

The van has over 300,000 kilometers on it and looks like it has had its best days long ago. It feels worn out, neglected, and far from the quality that is advertised. This is not just about comfort mold and poor hygiene are serious issues.

When we contacted the local team in Queenstown, there were no replacement vehicles available. We were told to email the booking team ourselves. Being left to deal with this during our holiday is incredibly frustrating.

This has had a major negative impact on our trip. A holiday should not start with deep-cleaning someone else’s campervan.

If you are considering renting from JUCY think twice. We deeply regret this booking and would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

unacceptable service and agressive manager

I want to share the unacceptable experience my family and I had with Jucy Rental Cars in Perth.

We were left waiting for over three hours with no clear communication or real solutions. When we reasonably raised our concerns, the manager, Jason, reacted in an aggressive and completely unprofessional manner. He slammed his hand on the counter, raised his voice, and yelled at my family. It was intimidating, unnecessary, and shocking behavior from someone in a customer service role.

After such an excessive delay, we asked to cancel the reservation. Instead of offering an apology or a solution, we were told we would lose our money if we cancelled. There was zero accountability and zero empathy.

To make matters worse, after the confrontation he was not even willing to hand over the keys in person. He avoided facing us directly.

We finally received the vehicle more than five hours late, which severely disrupted our travel plans.

This was a deeply disappointing and stressful experience. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Another candid story, another 1-star review, and it’s FOR A REASON!!!

JUCY is a company full of corporate individuals who DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. Plain and simple, they rent out their extensive fleet of faulty, old, and poorly maintained vehicles. When hardworking customers pay lots of money to rent a good product for their vacation/holiday, JUCY provides a very shotty product, and then screws the customer no matter what. People who give them 5 stars are either plants or they’re just damn lucky. Don’t take the chance and rent from JUCY -- you may not be so lucky! ... Crazy enough, after we read other reviews ourselves, we realized we were one of the lucky customers. That’s how bad it is with JUCY.

What we enountered:
1) A campervan in poor condition (metal clip to secure the overhead netting was broken, plastic guards were missing near sharp edges, a window latch was broken, and window shades were unable to clip to the wall. Importantly as well, there were many screws & bolts missing at the integral junction between the van's overhead cap and its main body. This gave us a reasonable level of concern about the van's structural integrity.)
2) The foldable camping chairs we paid extra for were not given to us. After turning around to get our chairs, we were given broken ones!
3) Our front and rear windshield wipers STOPPED WORKING at the most inopportune moments. There is no way that JUCY didn’t know about this issue prior to our rental! THIS WAS CLEAR NEGLIGENCE ON THEIR PART, AND WE HOPE THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN TO YOU. IT ALMOST CAUSED SEVERAL ACCIDENTS. Seriously, WTF!?
4) The grey-water tank would back up and pool in the shower. When traveling to a dump station to rectify the situation, water would slosh everywhere. (It created many messes for my wife and I to clean up and then sanitize).
5) The kitchen knives were in terrible condition. The bread knife was exceptionally dull, and the main kitchen knife struggled to slice literally anything!
6) The plastic hose attachment (used for filling up our freshwater tank) was… MISSING! It caused inefficient dump station runs, created a mess (I got drenched each time), it wasted our time, and caused a backup of angry camper waiting behind us.
7) The spare tire was… MISSING! Traveling thousands of kilometers across NZ without getting a flat made us feel like only luck got us through our trip, but surely does not disqualify JUCY from their negligence.
8) Lastly, our vehicle decided to frequently lock itself, by itself, while we were parked at campsites. To be absolutely clear, this occurred without us sitting on the key fob, without us touching the inside door buttons, or without a magic spell. No matter the cause, this issue could have, yet again, put us in a dire situation. We feel lucky for our foresight to keep the one key fob they provided on our person at all times. If we hadn't, we definitely would have been stranded.

---> JUCY's response to all this. "You didn't notify us within 24 hours." It's their loophole to absolve themselves of all responsibility. We are responsible adults, took the bull by the horns, stayed safe, and decided to act mature and discuss it at the end. Instead, JUCY would've rather had us call them to complain when we discovered our issues without cell reception, 100's of kilometers away their nearest branch, or during another scenario that wouldn't make sense.

There’s lots of campervan companies out there to choose from… Just do you self a favor and avoid JUCY at all costs. You might spend a bit more $ with another company, but the piece of mind you’ll have on vacation will be well worth it!

To all those who appreciate this message, we thank you for reading, and hope you enjoy your time renting from another company. Take care!

Scrap car rental

Our Jucy Crib was a complete wreck with almost 500,000 km and 20 years on the clock. The paint was peeling, the headlights were cloudy, the tires were worn out, and the sliding door on the driver's side wouldn't open without feeling like it was going to fall off. Exhaust fumes leaked directly into the car, and the roof wasn't watertight. The camping material was old and worn out. The box didn't cool when the car was parked, and the photocell had probably stopped working a long time ago.

The only positive thing was that, thankfully, it always started.

Avoid this company!

Do NOT rent Jucy or StaRV van ever

Amendment: this story worth details.
Executive summary: do NOT rent a Jucy or StaRV van ever! Or you will spend your vacation in workshops, with road assistance, and on the phone with Jucy customers support.
I rent a motorhome for 4 weeks.
After 5 days, the batteries was flat. It caused my family and I to spend 1 night in a hotel while the battery was charging in a workshop. We also realized that the fire extinguisher was missing, so we purchased on.
12 days later, it is happening again. The road assistance specialist mentioned that the motorhome needed a deep electric analysis because something was consuming energy from the engine battery even when the engine was off.
I called Jucy, I had Mel on the phone, and she literally told me to wait for more instructions and hang up the phone. After hours of negotiations on the phone, Jucy agreed to organize a swap. The bus arrived at 8:50pm, it was about to be completely dark. We agreed with the driver to do the swap in the morning. When doing the new bus inspection, I called Jucy to understand how to fold the sofa at the back into a bed. As a result, the table that would help to create a bed was missing. Furthermore, after 100km drive, a message on the driver screen mentioned “break force distribution visit workshop”.
We will return the bus before the end of our rental to end this nightmare.

We recently had the unfortunate…

We recently had the unfortunate experience of renting a JUCY van.
Right from the start it was a bad experience,
The electric cable had been melted so was unusable,
No gas in the gas bottle either.
When we called the company about it they wasn’t bothered but agreed to refund us if we got the the replacements. A month on and the refund still hasn’t come through even though they guaranteed it would be done before we left.
The cassette for the toilet hadn’t been emptied from the previous renters.
The pipe from the waste tank was hanging off so we couldn’t empty the waste tank.
The kitchen tap was broken so when you turned tap on the water sprayed up the rear door.
No sink plug so we couldn’t wash up either.
The glass covers that cover the sink and stove would not stay up so I had to tie them up
These were just the worst items among many that was wrong.
If I was you and thinking of renting from this company or there sister company (star rental’s) I would immediately change my mind.
If you want cheap and crappy carry on.
JUCY still have not offered up any sort of compensation after all our complaints and emails so we are now chasing them through the travel company that we purchased through

In September/October 2025

In October 2025, we rented a camper from Jucy for 28 days, expecting a carefree and memorable journey. Unfortunately, this experience turned into a deeply disappointing and emotionally distressing ordeal, largely due to the company’s serious lack of empathy and support.

From the moment we picked up the camper, it was clear how impersonal and rushed the handover was. No personal explanation of the vehicle was given; instead, we were shown a five-minute video, handed the keys, and sent off with a brief goodbye. Within hours, the first issues became apparent: the box used to access the toilet would not open, and several storage compartments were completely missing, having reportedly been damaged during a previous rental. Despite these shortcomings, we chose to downplay them, as we had traveled all the way from the Netherlands and did not want to let what initially seemed like “minor issues” affect our honeymoon.

Two days later, the situation took a dramatic turn. During the night, we had to rush to the emergency department. My partner was hospitalized for eight days. From that moment on, it was clear that continuing our trip was no longer possible. We immediately informed Jucy and explained our situation in detail. What we hoped for at that point — basic humanity, understanding, or a willingness to think along with us — was entirely absent.

Despite repeated contact and multiple conversations, Jucy refused any form of compensation or flexibility. They strictly adhered to their terms and conditions, showing no consideration for the exceptional and serious circumstances. We were allowed to return the camper immediately, but were told not to expect any refund for the many unused days. The responses from various employees were cold, distant, and purely procedural, as if this were an administrative inconvenience rather than a genuine emergency affecting their customers.

Adding insult to injury, we had deliberately taken out an insurance policy that was marketed as “stress-free plus.” In reality, this camper — and especially this company — caused us stress, disbelief, and disappointment at a time when we were already emotionally exhausted.

While it is one thing for a company to legally shield itself behind its terms and conditions, it is another to consciously choose to show no compassion, flexibility, or sense of responsibility. In our view, Jucy failed not only in customer service, but more importantly in basic human decency. For a company operating in the travel and adventure industry, where trips are often once-in-a-lifetime experiences, this is a serious shortcoming.
We therefore cannot recommend Jucy to travelers who value reliability, empathy, and support when it truly matters.

Never Again

We rented a motorhome for 10 days for 6 people in Perth, and unfortunately the experience was extremely disappointing.

The condition of the vehicle was very poor. The fridge did not work at all, the table holder was broken so the table was unusable, and the bed that was supposed to be converted for two people had parts mixed up, leaving space for only one person. The 6th person literally had to sleep on the floor. On top of that, rain leaked into the vehicle, the extra chairs we booked were falling apart just by looking at them, and overall the motorhome was completely worn out and neglected.

We also noticed traces of an old Apollo sticker on the vehicle, which makes us suspect that Jucy/StarRV buys old vehicles from better companies and rents them out again with the bare minimum of maintenance.

When we returned the motorhome and pointed out all these issues, the staff reacted very indifferently and even tried to shift the blame onto us. There was no person with responsibility available in the entire building, and we didn’t even receive a simple apology. We were told to send all complaints and feedback by email and that they would take care of it.

I sent a very detailed email to three different addresses, including the invoices for a promised refund (for an Esky), but five days later we still had neither a reply nor the money.

Very disappointing.

My tips for future customers:

Never choose Jucy/StarRV.

If you already booked, make sure every single function of the vehicle is demonstrated by an employee before departure — even if it takes two hours. It’s better than standing in the Outback without a fridge.

If you have complaints when returning the vehicle, do not let them brush you off. Once you leave the office, you are forgotten. Insist on your refund immediately and get everything confirmed in writing, ideally with photos.

Conclusion:
I was willing to give 3 stars if the issues had been properly addressed afterwards, but unfortunately I never had the feeling that anyone cared at all.

Still waiting for compensation

We would like to share our experience with this campervan rental company.

While the local staff in Perth were friendly and helpful, our overall experience with the rental was extremely disappointing. In particular, we are still waiting for a compensation payment that was confirmed in writing but has not been received to date.

From the beginning, the first campervan already had technical issues, including a permanent service warning, overdue engine oil, and a non-functioning stove plate. After approximately two weeks, a check engine warning appeared and the vehicle lost power. Roadside assistance advised us not to continue driving.

The rental company arranged a return flight to Perth. Although the flight itself was covered, this was still a major inconvenience, as our trip was completely interrupted and we later had to drive the same route again with the replacement vehicle (approximately 800 km).

Due to these issues, we lost several travel days, had to discard food and camping supplies, incurred additional costs, and were unable to complete large parts of our planned route. We also spent many hours over several days trying to reach customer support.

After returning to Perth, we received a replacement campervan. Unfortunately, this second vehicle also caused problems, as the electric step could no longer be retracted and had to be removed by roadside assistance, resulting in further loss of travel time.

Communication with this company has been extremely poor. Phone contact required repeated attempts, and email communication has effectively stopped. Compensation was offered and accepted in writing, yet almost two weeks later, no payment has been received and no response has been provided, despite multiple follow-up emails and clear deadlines. Due to this lack of response, we have now had to involve legal counsel.

Based on our experience, we strongly advise against booking with this company. If serious issues occur, communication becomes unreliable and confirmed resolutions are not followed through. We will not rent from this company again.
