Critical Failure in Diabetes Care and…

Critical Failure in Diabetes Care and Emergency Preparedness
I am a Type 1 diabetic and had provided my complete medical history to the attending doctor before beginning treatment at this centre. Despite repeatedly informing the doctor that my blood glucose levels were dropping and that I was experiencing significant fatigue, no meaningful adjustments were made to my treatment plan. My insulin dosage was not reviewed, and my glucose levels were not monitored adequately.

The situation became critical when my blood glucose level dropped below 30 mg/dL during the night, causing me to become unconscious and unresponsive. Fortunately, a friend who was staying with me noticed my condition and alerted the staff. Had she not been present, the outcome could have been far more serious.

What was most concerning was the apparent lack of preparedness for a medical emergency involving a diabetic patient. Despite admitting and treating diabetic patients, there were no trained medical personnel immediately available to manage the situation, and the facility did not have sufficient dextrose readily available. Since I was unconscious, oral glucose administration was not possible, and intravenous dextrose was required. However, the centre reportedly did not have adequate stock on hand and had to send someone out at approximately 1:00 a.m. to procure it. Treatment was delayed for nearly an hour while my glucose level remained critically low.

This raises serious concerns about patient safety, emergency preparedness, and the standard of care provided. Any facility that chooses to treat diabetic patients should have appropriate monitoring protocols, emergency response procedures, trained staff, and essential medications available at all times.

In addition to the physical risk I faced, the experience caused immense emotional distress to my friend, who had accompanied me for support and instead found herself dealing with a life-threatening medical emergency.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this centre. The lack of monitoring, inadequate emergency preparedness, and poor clinical judgment made this an extremely distressing and potentially dangerous experience.
