We bought a house in Victoria...Para Legal Nightmare

We recently purchased a house in Victoria and urgently needed a conveyancer. Unfortunately, we were assigned a paralegal named CM, who turned out to be the most unhelpful and disinterested professional we have ever dealt with.

To cut a long story short: CM took her own sweet time handling our urgent matter. Despite multiple phone calls and messages, she never called back. On day one, we were told she had been assigned to us and would reach out shortly—she never did. We had to call her ourselves because our contract required an urgent response.

We decided to give her the benefit of the doubt, but she refused to acknowledge any emails, including those about time-sensitive issues. We had to send repeated reminders and copy her bosses just to get a response—something she clearly did not appreciate.

For a brief moment, we thought things had improved, as she responded properly a couple of times. But soon enough, she lapsed back into her old ways: unresponsive, unproactive, and unwilling to answer pertinent questions. Worst of all, she wouldn't even acknowledge receipt of messages or emails.

Honestly, no words can fully describe the frustration and anxiety we felt being kept in the dark. What should have been an exciting milestone became a nightmare, all because we were assigned the most unprofessional paralegal we've ever encountered.

And we’ve bought and sold property many times over the years—this is the first time we’ve experienced someone so unhelpful, unproactive, and completely lacking client focus.

Our advice: If you're thinking of using LEAD, make sure you explicitly ask whether they will assign you a truly client-focused paralegal. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

ADDIT: Post reply from Lead Conveyancing. Unfortunately unable to reply directly to Lead's response. But here it is in brief.
Lead response naturally used words to navigate self out of identified problematic areas. This however does not remove the fact that we experienced the most unprofessional and unresponsive treatment from CM. Unfortunately one very unprofessional and unresponsive paralegal managed to taint the whole company.
However, I want to add that all the admins were excellent. Paula M was excellent too. She came into the scene and took over from CM at the very last 48 hours prior to settlement (Lead initiated this - probably realising CM was not performing). In the 48 hours, Paula contacted me numerous times. We spoke more than half a dozen times over the phone to ensure we were on the same page. This we truly appreciated and gave her plenty of applause and congratulated her. In comparison we suffered mental torture over the 3 months of being "looked after" by CM. We spoke only once right at the beginning - and that I have initiated the call.

Our recommendation remains the same.

*** If you're thinking of using LEAD, make sure you explicitly ask whether they will assign you a truly client-focused paralegal. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
Enough said.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are genuinely sorry to hear about your experience and the frustration and anxiety this matter has caused you. We understand how important clear and timely communication is, particularly in an urgent property transaction, and we regret that you felt unsupported during the process.

We have carefully reviewed your file and the conduct of your matter. While there were some delays at certain points, our records indicate that your paralegal remained actively engaged and responded to correspondence within a reasonable timeframe, while also working on the matter behind the scenes. That said, we acknowledge that this may not have aligned with your expectations, and we appreciate how this could have impacted your overall experience.

In terms of the work undertaken, your concerns regarding the building and pest inspection were raised and successfully negotiated, resulting in a reduction to the purchase price.

We also provided pre-settlement documentation and settlement figures to assist you in meeting your financial timelines.

We note as well that there was multiple fund transfers involved, and while we worked to reconcile these as promptly as possible, some delays arose where transfer confirmations were not immediately available, which are required for trust accounting purposes. Additionally, your request to bring forward settlement was communicated to the vendor; however, this was ultimately outside of our control as the other party did not agree to vary the contract terms.

We also understand that any instructions relating to the buyer must be confirmed directly with the buyers. For legal and compliance reasons, we are required to take instructions from the parties who are to be named on the title.

We truly value your feedback and take it seriously. While we believe your matter was handled appropriately and progressed toward a positive outcome, we recognise that your experience did not reflect the level of service we aim to provide.

We pride ourselves on our 48 hour communication guarantee. Should we have failed to contact you in this period and you wish to claim the $100 guarantee from us please email us at feedback@leadconveyancing.com.au with the details of the miss communication and we will be happy to reimburse the same. We would be greatly interested in receiving further feedback from you in relation to your matter. Should you wish to provide us with any further feedback we would welcome you to give us a call or email us at feedback@leadconveyancing.com.au.

Pros and cons

Pros: I liked how quickly they had other paralegals at the ready if one became unavailable so communication was never missed and the staff were always friendly.

Cons: However, the process was clunky and as a first home buyer, I felt very uneasy throughout each stage since I didn't know what I was signing and would've appreciated more details on what I was signing, what it's for and why it's needed.
The VOI process should've been the first step to alleviate the issues of finding documentation in physical format but instead was left till the end, I don't know if this is common practice, but I have everything in digital form which couldn't be used.

Overall was a good experience.

Fel Abrams was consistently available and made the settlement process super smooth

Fel Abrams was consistently available throughout the process and not in a cursory way, but in a way that made a real difference to me. Every question was met with a considered, helpful response, and anything he needed to look into came back to me the same day, without fail. That kind of reliability is rare and, during the stress of settlement, invaluable. We had a 30 day settlement and Fel made sure we weren't rushed and everything was lined up and ready to go with time to spare. Highly recommend.
