I too received a welcome pack through the post which included a direct debit confirmation for a small amount followed by £399.95 even though I had not requested anything. They are exploiting a loophole in the Direct Debit system - many years ago when I worked for a bank all new direct debits had to be confirmed by the local branch before payment demands would be accepted. We also got a warning every time a first payment was requested so that we could check that we had a valid direct debit mandate on file. Now it appears that checks are only made if the bank is concerned about the authenticity of the direct debit and then they would follow up with the originator. I suspect this will only happen if a customer complains that money has been taken without their knowledge. So while the direct debit guarantee protects people in the sense that they can get a refund, it doesn't protect those who haven't noticed the money going out - this is the exploit! The banks ARE aware based on other reviewers comments so clearly they are taking no action when in fact they do have grounds for questioning the authenticity of these direct debit mandates. I have approached the organisation that operates the direct debit system for comment.
ADDENDUM: I have already received an email reply from BACS who run the direct debit system. They suggest that if a direct debit has been set up then request the SUN (Service User Number) and the company name of who set up the direct debit from your bank and send to BACS who will then investigate. I don't want to insert links here but finding who to contact is quite easy - just google search "who runs direct debits in the UK" and their website will be displayed.

I’ve had exactly the same experience. Ringing and emailing just going round in circles. My advice is phone the police as I’ve done.

My mother in law was sent a letter with "important documents enclosed" written on the outside. Being 89 she opened it and was frightened by what was inside. All her bank details written on a direct debit mandate saying that these people were about to start taking £399.99 a month from her, remember she is 89 years old, never been in touch with this disgusting company, never given her bank details to anyone that has asked for them from this disgusting company. Would never contemplate joining any leisure club, at anytime in her life, never mind at 89 years of age. She was at her wits end with worry that her bank was about to be raided by this bunch of disgusting tripe. It was lucky for her she was able to go to her bank that still exists in the high street, where she is known. As her daughter used to work at this branch they were very good and stopped all payments to this bunch of thieving scamming scum. No words are strong enough to describe how I feel for the hatred I have for them.

SCAMMERS.
My father inlaw got letter stating he had signed up. His bank details are correct but he does not know his account details, so could not have giving them out.
When the wife got in touch with them and said she has power of attorney, they said they needed a copy before they could speak to her. Hmmm hold on while we use the zip at the back of head to remove our brains..... That will take days to get to you, and guess what you'll have already taken money out.
Been reported to bank and action fraud. If you get one report to same
They even put dates in American format.
ie. Month/Day/ Year
****** UPDATE ********

Total scam, my mum who is 88 received a letter from this company saying a direct debit had been set up and will take £399. I called the company and and spoke to a gentleman who said that a 3rd party had given them my mums bank details. When I asked who these were? He could not tell me? Then when I said my mum is 88 he said she shouldn't have been targeted as she's vulnerable. What a strange thing to say from someone whos taking money off people. But very worrying that they have people's bank details. Called bank to put a stop to it too.

This company are not to be trusted. Sending out letters with fraudulently set up direct debits to the tune of £400. Who has set them up and where did they get the bank details from is unknown at the moment. If you receive an unsolicited letter from them with a direct debit in place contact your bank as a matter of urgency.

At no point did we sign up to this club at £399 per year.
The account details quoted were also obtained by deception - I previously received a call from someone supposedly trying to issue a refund on a washing machine warranty (which we don't have). Realising that call was a scam I gave them the DWP account details. Those details are now quoted on the Leisure Lifestyle letter. Good luck getting that payment!
Update: just revisiting the reviews for this "company" and noticed that a number of new "positive" reviews have recently appeared, all flagged as "invited" and all from single review accounts... It appears that the scam deepens....

Another unsolicited letter with legitimate bank details that were not given. This company is a complete scam. Bank of Scotland said they couldn't stop the direct debit before it happens, so looks like £1.75 gone to scammers before we can hopefully stop the next debit which is £399.95.

My mother got a similar letter to the ones below. We don’t think she is now capable of giving her Bank details over the phone but the correct details were on the form and a direct debit had been set up. The bank has now stopped the direct debit, the second was for £399.75.

Mother got the same letter. She is 82. Got no idea how they know her bank details and would have thrown the letter away if I hadn't checked. Emailed the company just waiting for reply.
Hard to know who to trust. Perhaps put more info on the web page.
Finally got it sorted. They emailed man to say they'd cancel the membership and said call if she had problems with payment leaving the bank.

Totally out of the blue and unsolicited, I received a letter from Leisure Lifestyle congratulating me on qualifying for a free 12-month dining card and enclosing a Direct Debit instruction with my bank details.
How on earth they got those details - I only give them out to people I am buying from. Until this arrived,
I can only say that their methods are, to say the least, dubious.

I have received mail from this company telling me that I have qualified for a free trial of their dining card along with a direct debit mandate with my full bank details. I have never even heard of this company before or agreed to sign up to anything with them and have only ever given my bank details out to anyone when necessary. I believe them to be fraudulent and have emailed them to advise them that I will take the matter further if I don’t get a satisfactory explanation as to how I have been selected. If I hadn’t noticed the mandate hidden within the mail it would have probably just gone into recycling and I would not have been aware that money had been taken out of my account.

It then took me over 10 minutes to get to speak to a member of staff.

Got a call to offer me a free trial. Decent offers including a holiday for me and 3 friends. Not cheap but I will be quids in with that alone. B&q discount has also be useful as I am doing up my kitchen, saved about £80 already. So far so good.
