Review summary

Based on reviews, created with AI

Reviewers had a great experience with this company. Customers consistently praise the staff for their helpfulness, patience, and engaging teaching styles, which make learning enjoyable and effective. Many people highlight the flexibility in scheduling and the small class sizes as significant advantages, allowing for personalized attention and ample opportunities to practice speaking. The structured approach and well-organized lessons are also frequently mentioned as key factors in their successful language learning journeys. However, some customers also noted issues with the subscription rules, finding them strict and occasionally leading to lost credits if classes are missed or rescheduled. A few other people felt that the class level placement system could be improved, as sometimes students with varying proficiency levels are grouped together, which can slow down the lesson for more advanced learners.

I like the classes and the teachers but the classes reschedule is not good at all

I like the classes and the teachers. It has been a great experience. I just think they are too strict with their schedule and rescheduling of classes. Only being able to do it 3 days before is too strict, I was sick and had to go to the doctor a couple of times and missed classes and lost credits due to this. They should be more considerable that stuff happens in life, this makes me not wanting to continue with a lot of classes, just a few to prevent this. It is indeed sad because the program and the teachers are very helpful.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Gonçalo.

We’re glad to hear that you enjoy the classes and the teachers, and that you find the program helpful overall. It means a lot to us that you have had a positive learning experience in that regard.

At the same time, we are sorry to hear that our rescheduling policy has caused frustration, especially in situations where you were unwell or had medical appointments. We completely understand that unexpected life events can happen, and we appreciate you sharing your perspective.

Class credits are used to reserve your learning spot in a specific live classroom. When a class is booked, a teacher is assigned and prepares that lesson based on the scheduled participants. This is why the credit is tied to the reserved session.

For our regular classes (excluding Sprinters), it is possible to cancel a class and have the credit returned if the cancellation is made at least 72 hours before the class start time, or within the 30-minute cancellation window immediately after booking. This policy is in place to ensure fair planning for both teachers and other students, and to maintain consistent class availability across the platform.

We do understand that this timeframe can feel strict in certain situations. However, we also want to highlight that we do review individual cases, and in exceptional circumstances, such as illness, doctor’s appointments, or other valid reasons, it may be possible to grant a class credit refund. In such cases, supporting documentation may be requested.

If you have lost credits due to medical appointments or illness, we kindly encourage you to reach out to our Student Support team via chat or email at service@lingoda.com. They will be happy to review your situation and assist you further.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience you experienced and truly appreciate your honest feedback.

Wishing you continued success on your language learning journey!

I thought I was buying 20 lessons but did not realise I was signing up for ongoing monthly subscription

I signed up for 20 French lessons on 26th Jan, paying £149.99 for 20 lessons. I never realised I was signing up to a monthly subscription, I thought I was making a one off payment. I didn't notice the next payment taken on 26th feb because it was my Monzo card which I don't check regularly. Then I noticed they'd taken £199.99 out of my account today! (26th March) That's £500 for 7 lessons. I didn't take any more after 10th Feb because I put in a complaint about the quality of course material which they never addressed. They are now refusing a refund.

Thank you for your honest feedback, Hilary.

We are very sorry to hear that your experience with the payment and subscription process was not clear and has led to this frustration.

Your language course is set up as a subscription that renews automatically every 28 days unless it is cancelled beforehand. This information is outlined in our Terms and Conditions, on our pricing page, and during the checkout process where the subscription details are provided before confirming the purchase.

Additionally, your account was created during a New Year’s promotion, which offered a discounted rate for the first two months. After this period, the subscription continued at the standard price, as indicated at the time of sign-up.

Please also note that the subscription is only stopped from renewing if it is actively cancelled, either directly through your account or by requesting cancellation via our Support Team. Unfortunately, not attending further classes does not automatically stop the subscription.

Regarding your refund request, please note that refunds are only possible within 14 days of the initial registration . As this period has passed, we are unfortunately unable to process a refund in this case.

That said, I’m very sorry to hear about your concerns regarding the course material and the overall experience with the subscription, and I’ve passed your feedback on internally for review so we can continue improving our learning experience. Rest assured that your input is taken seriously.

In order to assist you further, our Support Team has reached out to you, offering a exceptional extension of your account activity for 3 months, free of another charge.

We hope this could give you some additional flexibility and time to use the class credits that were already purchased.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

Hard to learn when other students are not in the right level

I think Lingoda should have a better system to make sure students are at the right level. Sometimes we spend a lot of time in class just having to explain a vocab that a student should have learned 2 levels ago. Students who are actually in the right level don't benefit much in those cases.

Thank you for your honest words.

We are sorry to hear that your learning experience in some classes did not meet your expectations.

We understand that group classes can sometimes be challenging, especially when students are at slightly different stages in their learning journey. Language learning naturally varies from person to person, as some learners progress faster, while others may need more time to consolidate previous material. Our courses follow a structured and progressive curriculum, but in a group setting, these differences can occasionally impact the class dynamic.

To support students in choosing the right level, we offer a placement test before starting, as well as orientation classes for most levels to give a clear idea of what to expect. In addition, after each lesson, teachers provide individual feedback and may recommend a level adjustment if they notice that a class was too easy or too challenging.

That said, your feedback is very valuable, and we truly appreciate you taking the time to share it.

If you ever experience a class where the learning experience is not as expected, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Support Team via chat or email at service@lingoda.com. We will be happy to review the situation and assist you further.

Thank you again for your input.

After many years of being on the fence…

After many years of being on the fence with lingoda, I finally decided to pull the trigger. What lingoda does well: Teaches a generic form of Spanish. Some lessons will teach more "Spain" Spanish which is a downside for me personally. The reason I took away one star is that the typical times of 5pm EST to 9pm EST there usually aren't any slots available. So you either have to take classes on the weekends or earlier/later than expected if you work full time. It also sucks that you have to keep an active subscription in order to take classes, even if you have classes paid for.

Thank you for your honest words, Özgen.

We are very sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the frequency of teacher changes and the impact this has had on your experience.

At Lingoda, we aim to offer classes at a wide range of times every day, and we rely on a large pool of experienced and certified teachers to ensure availability and continuity of lessons.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to actively choose or guarantee a specific teacher for group or private classes. Teachers manage their own schedules independently, and while a teacher may be shown for a class at the time of booking, we cannot guarantee their final availability for that session.

Due to unforeseen changes or personal circumstances, a teacher may occasionally become unavailable. In such cases, we always do our best to assign a qualified substitute teacher so that the lesson can still take place as planned.

We understand that this may sometimes feel disruptive, and we are very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you. While booking classes where a teacher is already assigned can increase the likelihood of attending a class with them, it is unfortunately not something that can be guaranteed.

Regarding your comments about our charging and subscription model, we would like to clarify that our learning plans are monthly subscriptions that renew automatically every 28 days. Each renewal provides a new set of class credits and continues access to the platform for the next cycle, unless the subscription is cancelled beforehand. This model allows us to ensure continuous access to live classes and a high level of teacher availability across different time slots.

We understand that changes in teachers and the subscription structure may not meet everyone’s expectations, and we are sorry for any frustration this has caused.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. They help us improve our service and learning experience.

I had my first 5 conversation lessons…

I had my first 5 conversation lessons at Lingoda and so far I am satisfied. The classes last 1 hour and have small groups of 5 students maximum, which allows everyone the opportunity to speak. The teachers come prepared with materials that prompt conversations, grammar review and the usage of new vocabulary. To be even better they could add more vocabulary and prompt feedback. Recommended!

I joined Lingoda a couple of months ago…

I joined Lingoda a couple of months ago and didn't get around to using my lessons, so I paused my subscription. I have just learned that I have lost all my lessons from the previous month. It would have been nice to get a nudge to remind me I was going to lose my ten lessons, and I am very unhappy that they took my money after I had paused my subscription.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us, Tim. We are sincerely sorry to hear about the frustration you’ve experienced regarding your class credits and the timing of your subscription charges. We truly understand how disappointing it feels to think your progress has been lost while you've been unwell.

We would like to clarify how our credit system works to provide some peace of mind: class credits at Lingoda have a 1-year validity period. They are not lost if they aren't used within a single billing cycle; instead, they stay in your account regardless of your subscription status. While an active subscription is required to book and attend classes, your credits remain available until you use them or they reach their individual 1-year expiration date.

Regarding the charge you noticed, our records indicate that a pause was unfortunately not successfully scheduled on the account before the renewal. However, we have already reached out to you via email with a special one-time exception so you can catch up with your classes.

We hope this solution helps you with your lessons once you are feeling better. We value your commitment to learning with us and look forward to hearing back from you via email.

Thank you for your valuable input, Xenia!

Firstly, we’re sorry to hear that you have experienced technical issues with our website and app.

We understand how important a smooth and reliable platform is for your learning experience, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Your feedback is important, and we will make sure it is forwarded to the responsible technical team for review and improvement.

Regarding your comments about lesson timing, we appreciate you raising this and are sorry for any classes that ended early.

Please note that both students and teachers have a 10-minute window to join the classroom in case of minor delays. However, we of course encourage everyone to start the lesson at the scheduled time to ensure the best possible learning experience.

While our lessons are designed as 60-minute sessions, the actual learning progress can depend on the flow and interaction of all participants, and therefore, it is not always guaranteed that all learning materials will be fully completed within the class. That said, we completely understand your concern that lessons should not end early when there is still content left to cover.

In general, teachers may end the class a few minutes early if all planned materials have been completed, or if they have another class scheduled immediately after, allowing them time to transition smoothly between sessions.

For any technical issues or classes that did not go as planned, please note that you can always reach out to our Student Support team, who will be happy to investigate the matter further.

Thank you again for your honest input, and wishing you a great continuation of your learning journey!
