Written by the company

Initiative to help garment workers impacted by Covid. Lost Stock allows shoppers to buy a mystery box of clothes cancelled by leading brands and retailers. For every box bought a garment worker and her family for a week through the Bangladeshi NGO, Sajida Foundation. This initiative was set up in May 2020 in response to $2bn of clothes being cancelled by leading brands with no payments being made to factories. In 7 months 125,000 boxes were sold, surpassing the initial target of 10,000. To do this a new global supply chain was built during a pandemic from scratch.

Not what was promised. Appalling. A con.

This is an appalling con. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY. They purported to be a charitable organisation selling off cancelled stock from reputable retailers at effectively half its value. The stock took 3 months to arrive, it was not worth anything like the promised £75 value (I found it online for less than £40 at full RRP) and was not from the retailer brands advertised. When I asked for a return I needed to email and tweet them 5 times before I got the address to return to. Then they wouldn’t refund the postage or pay for the return. It is such a scam I am furious they did this in the name of charity and have then tried to guilt customers into not complaining. Appalling. Dishonest. Misleading. Should be criminal. Order number 11412.

We’re sorry you didn’t enjoy your experience with Lost Stock. Throughout this initiative, we’ve tried very hard to create a great experience for consumers in the face of numerous challenges created by the situation facing workers and also in building a totally new supply chain in the middle of a pandemic.

At no point did we make the claim that we were a charity and always provided a breakdown of all the costs behind each box, this was available as one of the first links on our site. Instead we partnered with SAJIDA Foundation, a local Bangladesh NGO to support workers and a number of other charities to donate items to.

Lost Stock was designed specifically to help garment workers and factories impacted by cancellations by brands of completed items. In just 7 months we were able to generate enough funds to support 113,000 people for just over 4 weeks each by selling cancelled items in a mystery box. This work and the full financials behind Lost Stock can be accessed in our impact report - https://loststock.com/blogs/news/the-impact-of-lost-stock

The scale of building Lost Stock during a pandemic was a huge undertaking and we’re really sorry that this resulted in a less than positive experience for you, but this does not mean we were a scam. We hope you'll get a chance to look into our report above.

I understand the premise of this was…

I understand the premise of this was noble, but we were lied to a lot. I got told several times my order had been shipped. I ended up cancelling when people received cheap clothing with tags that said “made in China” on them despite the company stating their clothes were coming from a completely different country. I received my refund from PayPal after I received no communication from Loststock. When I originally emailed asking for a refund after 8 months of emails that lied to me, I received a response that tried to emotionally blackmail me into being grateful for whatever I received. I believe they seemed to have noble intentions, but if they’re making a profit from this service, they need to give that money back to the charities/people.

As outlined at the start of the project, whilst the aid element was focused on helping workers in Bangladesh we did on occasion buy items that had been cancelled in other production countries where factories had seen large cancellations. With this in mind, we bought some items from India and a very small number from China – under 5%. Before we bought any stock, we checked the accreditation of the factories and would only buy direct, to ensure transparency of the supply chain.

We updated on this multiple times during the initiative on social media and in blog posts as it was never our intention for this to be, in any way a secret. However, we’re sorry if you didn’t feel this was made clear to you when you purchased.

The premise was great....

The premise was great; order a box of clothing for £35, get at least 3 items of clothing worth double the RRP value 6-8 weeks later, and support a family of workers who’d had their livelihood stripped away due to a national pandemic. Amazing! Unfortunately, the execution was not so great.
I waited, and waited, for my box. 6, then 8, weeks went by. 11 weeks later my ‘box’ (plastic bag) arrived. I knew then that I hadn’t been lucky enough to receive one of the fabled Topshop leather jackets, BUT, not one to be easily disheartened I still felt excited about what may lie within. Being the kind of girl who never spills unless they’re wearing a white top, I’d selected medium, plain darks as my preference. I received 3 white, sleeveless vest tops. Deflated, and dubious about their worth, I was still happy about my charitable contribution. Off I went to try on my tops. Finding care labels still left in, my inner sleuth spied a little stuck on label at the bottom, maybe obscuring the brand!?? Where can my 3 sleeveless white tops worth at least £70 be from??? MATALAN - that’s where! Inner sleuth was now on a roll and found two of the tops actually on sale on the Matalan website, for the grand total of.....£20!! Eh?? That would mean my last white sleeveless top, origin of which still to be identified, was worth at least £50? I think not. I doubt it was worth the £15 it would need to be to just ensure I broke even on the £35.
It also raised questions about where the clothes were being sourced and the whole Loststock premise. I was under the impression that these clothes were destined for landfill as these ‘leading brands’ had cancelled their orders and the families had no hope of any income. Here they were, being sold online to the masses by a discount retailer. After some research, I realised I wasn’t alone. Others had similar experiences and despite the call for clarity on pricing from their customers, Loststock stood by their product and insisted they could not share original RRP. I also discovered they were blocking people on social media for their honest feedback, which felt a bit too Orwellian for me to be comfortable with.
At this point this did not just boil down to my bad experience. I felt there was a much deeper issue and I emailed the company my thoughts to let them know how disappointed and misled I felt. The stock email reply, which did nothing to ingratiate me to them, suggested ways I could get a refund if I wasn’t happy, so I did choose to follow that path. I raised a case with PayPal as I felt more confident with an intermediary overlooking the process and did receive a full refund.
Bitterly disappointed by the whole experience, unfortunately Loststock has made a sceptic out of me and I’ll definitely think twice about supporting a similar scheme again.

Throughout this initiative, we’ve tried very hard to create a great experience for consumers in the face of numerous challenges created by the situation facing workers and also in building a totally new supply chain in the middle of a pandemic.
We bought stock cancelled by over 50 different brands and retailers due to the coronavirus pandemic, directly from factories. Due to this being cancelled stock, all brand tags had to be removed from products to allow them to be sold, which in some cases can make items feel lower quality. We’re sorry that you weren’t happy with the quality of the items in your Lost Stock box.
With Lost Stock we only bought items that had been cancelled by brands and retailers. By the end of the project we had bought products that had been cancelled by over 50 different companies. In a couple of small instances, brands returned to buy some of their originally cancelled stock from the factories we were working with and then sold these items at a price lower than the outlined RRP. Whilst it is commended that brands returned to purchase this stock and helped factories and workers of course this caused some confusion.

Don’t miss the point of this

I ordered during the first lockdown and I was immediately made aware that the parcel would take a while to arrive, and then given subsequent updates on the delays. I received both mine and my sister’s orders (which I then sent onto Belgium for her) and the clothes were of a good quality, and an opportunity to try out something we’d perhaps not normally choose for ourselves. This is a good scheme, carried out painstakingly by the team at Lost Stock. The timing with which the clothes arrive, or their quality, or their colour and fit is not the most important thing aspect of Lost Stock - it is the opportunity to help out those most affected by the impact the pandemic has had on fashion production

Disgraceful

Never mind the poor review I could give for the delivery (took months) and the quality of clothes (advertised £70+ worth of goods- received matalan vests) the main problem I have with this is someone has made money out of this scheme- there is no report as to how much money has gone to charity. It’s left a really bad taste in my mouth- wish I’d bought new clothes and donated straight to charity. Scam. Avoid!

Struggling to hit the mark...

Ordered a box back in May and annoyingly it took until around August/September to arrive.

The contents of the box were average to say to least. Not really the value that was advertised. One of my items was actually in sale at Matalan at the time for around £8-£12 So given that my other two items were a small tie dye vest and a thin summers dress it's obvious these did not match the advertised value if £70 nevermind the £35 I paid for the box

This scheme had so much potential but has fallen flat, delays have been ridiculous (but given the current climate understandable) however the garments offered have been cheap, the handling of issues has been pretty dire and I've come out rather disappointed by it all.

This idea showed such promise ....

This idea showed such promise and I fully supported the ethics of the company. Sadly the idea was not followed through, either by quality product or a comprehensive or trustworthy response in delivering either the items or an accurate timescale - the suggested dates came and went multiple times. I was left disheartened by the whole process, ultimately receiving a refund, which was actioned quickly and without conflict.

PayPal refunded me thankfully

Had I not requested a refund from PayPal within the 180 days allocated by them, I would never have received a refund. I was told multiple times the order couldn't be refunded as it was on its way, it was on it's way for at least 6 weeks from receiving tracking information to a refund. I received terrible customer service. The order itself was already 6 months late when I received the refund. I feel ashamed to say I bought into this company under the pretence of supporting garment workers. I chose to donate directly to charity instead.

To build Lost Stock, we had to create a global supply chain from scratch at a time of significantly reduced air freight. Instead, the order had to be delivered and then returned. We’re sorry this was the case.

Covid box order

Ordered a box during then start of the pandemic, order took a wee while which was expected (lockdown, global pandemic etc) but the box arrived with clothes that fitted my preferences. Got three really nice tops and a dress that wasn’t my style which I swapped for someone else’s top- great and zero waste. Really happy with the overall experience and to have given some money to charity in a really difficult time.

Left with a feeling of deep disappointment

Order my box at that start of lockdown one and it did not arrive until August 2020. Very sparse email updates from Lost Stock. Boxes were advertised as being worth £70 on the UK high street. I received 3 tops, one was too old for me, one too young (and far too small) both very poor quality. The third was (after some investigation) from a German chain. Better quality but not flattering at all. I understand that there was an element of lucky dip but my overall emotion about using this company is a deep disappointment. Long lead times, lack of communication, poor quality product.
I did not request a refund as part of my money was going to charity. I wish I’d missed out the middle man and donated directly to the charity.
Lock stock is a profit-making organisation. Customers should not have to put up with poor quality service and goods because a portion of the proceeds go to charity.
It is clear that they became overwhelmed with orders and could not cope. However, they could have stopped taking new peoples’ money when it was clear that their logistics were unsatisfactory. But they did not and that is wholly inexcusable.

A big nope from me

My friend told me about Lost Stock and not only was I impressed with what they were doing, I was also looking forward to a little retail therapy after a few months stuck at home.

Originally, the parcel was meant to take 12 weeks. After double this period of time, poor, confrontational and downright misleading communications from the Lock Stock team plus some terrible quality items being received by other customers, I requested a cancellation. It was refused, despite the distance selling regulations being breached.

I eventually contacted PayPal (who by this time were well acquainted with Lost Stock) and raised a dispute.

I would highly recommend staying well clear of anything to do with the people involved in this. Lovely idea, terrible execution and downright dishonest at times.

Like many others I ordered back in May after press coverage, thinking I was doing my bit for charity and looking forward to what I would recieve. 4 months on, numerous conflicting emails, I received tops which were not worth what I paid, let alone original cost. Complete and utter con , don't go near them.

Terrible company

The clothes took forever to arrive and were awful quality. Not the sizing or style I asked for. Certainly not what was promised. The whole thing is very sketchy and I think dishonest. Customer service was terrible. Any negative feedback on social media was removed by them. This was never about supporting workers in India. I wish I had just donated directly to a charity.

The company certainly wasn’t perfect but they kept communicating the issues around delays and how they were working through them. I can’t imagine the amount of work that goes into setting up something of this size in a pandemic.

The tops I got were great, even if they might not have been the normal thing I would have bought.

I think people need to remember what this was all about instead of just having a witch hunt to make themselves feel better whilst in lockdown.

Great idea but disappointing experience

Great initiative, but as others have pointed out, it was incredibly poorly executed.

The clothes being sent out were apparently from cancelled orders, meaning they're surely all sat around waiting to be sent out to some lucky recipient. The estimated delivery time of 6-8 weeks was never achievable and should never have been put on their website. Right from the start it was taking months and months for orders to be dispatched, and this never improved.

The garments were apparently made by workers in bangladesh. No other country was mentioned, yet all my items had 'made in India' tags. No issue with this except the transparency. It makes me question all of their other claims.

My order took 3 months to be delivered (not bad in comparison to many others I've heard from).

The value of the box is nowhere near the £70 that was promised. I'd actually say it's worth less than what was paid.

We’re sorry you didn’t enjoy your experience with Lost Stock. Throughout this initiative, we’ve tried very hard to create a great experience for consumers in the face of numerous challenges created by the situation facing workers and also in building a totally new supply chain in the middle of a pandemic.
Of course, even with these circumstances, we’re sorry you didn’t enjoy your experience with us. You can view our full report on the project in our Impact Report - https://loststock.com/blogs/news/the-impact-of-lost-stock

Give to charity

Ordered a box very soon after the scheme launched. Updates were sporadic and asked for a refund after 6 month. Great idea very poorly executed. Give to a charity instead..

We’re sorry you didn’t enjoy your experience with Lost Stock. We really tried to create a positive experience for customers against the challenging backdrop of helping garment workers and setting up a new supply chain during the pandemic.

Of course, even with these circumstances, we’re sorry we fell short for you and you didn’t enjoy your experience with us. You can see our full report on the project in our Impact Report - https://loststock.com/blogs/news/the-impact-of-lost-stock
