Zero support

Macmillan nurse came to fill out forms, showed no interest in my Mum as a person. When my Mum was upstairs being sick I was holding my Mum and mopping her face, while the "nurse" continued sitting downstairs with her cup of tea looking at her forms. That is not the caring nurse that I expected (don't believe the smiley adverts). We never heard from them after the initial visit and to be honest I wouldn't have wanted them. Zero advice, zero empathy, zero practical use. Shame I have to give even one star. My Mum has since passed but this still annoys me to this day. When you are confronted by the diagnosis of terminal cancer you look for support not someone to come round have tea and biscuit then disappear, totally useless!!

Hello Noel, thank you for getting in touch and sharing your experience with us. We're so sorry to hear about the loss of your mum. Please accept our condolences. We often recommend an organisation called Cruse Bereavement, which works specifically with people who have been bereaved: cruse.org.uk. Should you ever feel like chatting to someone who can understand, you may wish to keep them in mind. You can also call our Support Line for free on 0808 808 00 00 (7 days a week 8am - 8pm) for advice, emotional support or even just a listening ear.
Noel I realise that we cannot change how you have been left feeling after your experience, but I am concerned and would like to look into what has happened and ensure that this is fedback to the correct area. As we will be asking for personal information would you be able to email us at feedback@macmillan.org.uk with your mothers details, the hospital she was under and when this happened? We can look to raise a complaint within a two year period.
Noel our Palliative Care Nurses that offer support at home, are usually put in place following either a GP Assessment or a request from your mum's cancer team. It would also help if you knew if this had been done.
I apologise again that this was your experience, and look forward to your email, so I can look into this for you. Take care,

Just saw Macmillan reply to my post and…

Just saw Macmillan reply to my post and it's just waffle. There are already nurses on the cancer wards working with the patients so do not need more highly paid nurses in talking jobs.So many people dying in agony because of poor pain relief and little or no contact with Consultants. My friends Father died in terrible pain while his allocated Macmillan nurse looked on.The family spoke to a Jnr Dr who couldn't prescribe proper pain relief so had to ring another hospital. This is happening everywhere.Macmillan waste of time.

The rating says it all tbf

The rating says it all tbf. My dad had terminal cancer, they showed up up once and never bothered again. I rang them a fair few times and they weren't interested. Disgraceful service, and I have declined to give to any fundraisers since. My experience was 8 years ago now, but it doesn't look like anything has changed from the comments, and that's really disappointing.

Thank you for getting in touch Angela Parsonage, we're so sorry to hear of this experience, understandably you have been left feeling let down and disappointed. At a time when your dad, and family needed us the most it sounded like Macmillan weren't there to offer support.
We appreciate that nothing can be done now to change what has already happened, however if you would like to share some further information with us about what happened at the time, please feel free to get in touch with us at feedback@macmillan.org.uk.

Buddy review

Im writing this review about the MacMillan buddy service not the support line.
I have not been very happy with the service thus far as I feel you get treated like a child. First of all your buddy gets to withold their number so you cant contact them and have to go through a kind of babysitter to arrange talks with them.
I understand that some people do not wish to disclose their number however one person is disclosing their number and if there was really any kind of issue with harrassment they could be blocked or removed from the service.
After all presumably these are 2 adults communicating with each other.
The idea in theory is a really good one. Both of you have been through cancer and could provide emotional support but all this other gatekeeping has really put me off the whole idea Im afraid. I think I would be better off just talking to a friend!

We are so sorry to read that you were promised support and this didn’t happen. This is not what we would expect and I do apologise that this was your experience. You mention that you got support through Sam Bear Hospice. Did she have palliative care from this service? If palliative care is already in place through your hospice, we wouldn’t cross over this service. It may have been that there wasn’t a Macmillan Nurse available in your area at the time, which is why the support was put in place through the hospice. We would expect that if this is the case however, that this is explained to you fully by your healthcare team.

I realise we cannot change how you must be feeling but we would like to support you by looking into what has happened. Would you email us at feedback@macmillan.org.uk with some more information of who you reached out, who promised you support and your mother in law’s details and hospital details so we can do this?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and we look forward to hearing from you. Take care

Waste of space, McMillan Nurses

A close friend of mine was diagnosed with Cancer.
She didn't ask for a Mcmillan Nurse, but was assigned one whether she wanted it or not.
The Mcmillan nurse spoke to her for just 5 minutes and reassured her she would be there, every step of the way and could answer any questions she might have.

That was about 6 weeks ago.
Since then the Mcmillan nurse has not even rung her to see how she is. The Mcmillan nurse gave her a business card with her name and contact number on it and told her she could call her anytime.
She could too, as the number goes to voicemail every time. Nursing by remote I assume.

They are absolutely pathetic.
I don't know if this is a generation thing, or is it that they are all utterly useless.
They over promise and deliver nothing.

Should not be working with Cancer patients.

I have advanced Lymphoma. All I needed was a letter to state my condition and housing would have re-housed us. No one at Macmillan, either the admin or the hospital nurses would help. All they would say is what they can't do. Now, I am trying to close my account with them, they are saying I haven't got an account I was already logged into. An awful company that should not be working with people who suffer from cancer. Avoid them.

Give to cancer research instead

I would give less than one star if I could. My mum died of cancer, received one call from these people then nothing at all.
My 42 Yr old son also died of cancer . Missed one call from the .tried to ring ba, no answer . No furtcontact from then . Both were refferd by hospitals. These people are very poor at doing what they say they do. Give to cancer research instead of lining peoples pockets with your grief...

My wife was given a terminal diagnosis…

My wife was given a terminal diagnosis with colon cancer In April, and died on the 1st of May. All of the nurses and hca's were amazing but the one thimg that let the whole experience down were the Macmillan nurses. They were pushy, rude invasive and clearly not apt to dealing with People. They would forget to turn up to sort out the driver, they said they would sort out various things for us and just disappeared into these sunset. They failed to control my wife's pain and frankly they weren't nice people, to the point we wanted to go private to get away from them. A useless collection of people without the necessary skills to to even talk to cancer patients, let alone treat them.

Honestly disgusted with this company

Honestly disgusted with this company. They where supposed to help ease the suffering of my grandmother's boyfriend wez and they did absolutely sod all till his final hours. They left him to suffer. Along with my grandma. She had to watch the man she loved slowly lose his mind due to his blood flooding with toxins because of his terminal liver cancer. They where supposed to arrive weeks ago to help my grandma and him with whats to come and provide ways to ease the pain and suffering in his final days. This is pure neglegence and cruelty thats is borderline criminal. How this company can be allowed to continue doing business if this is what they do. Heals where dragged at every turn. This man did not deserve this. They let a good man suffer till his final moments to die in my grandmother's arms.

Thank you for getting in touch and sharing your thoughts regarding Macmillan. I am very concerned to read your feedback, and apologise that this has been your experience. Our National Support Line that can be contacted on 0808 808 0000, 7 days a week 8am to 8pm has teams of advisers waiting to take your calls. They are made up of teams of Information and Support Advisers, Cancer Information Nurse Specialists and a Money and Work Service all on hand to offer support, guidance and a listening ear when needed.

It is rare for us to recommend another charity, and we only do this if the subject is an area that we are not the experts in. An example may be that if someone contacts us as they are homeless, we are not experts in this field and we would refer them to Shelter.

I would like to look into what has happened for you to have had this experience and hoped that you could email us at feedback@macmillan.or.uk with further details of who you contacted and the number that you rung from so we can try to locate the call and explore your experience further.

It is very disappointing to read your comments and we look forward to your email.

Staff so well informed and helpful

After searching hard online to find the answer to a couple of questions I phoned MacMillan and they were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. I needed to know how long I was likely to have a low immune system after just a lumpectomy without radiation or chemo and straight away I was told 6-12 weeks. I also asked about having had reconstruction what my options would be if I wasn't happy with it, and again got a very clear answer and told that I'd have options and what they were. It was all very impressive and I got through very quickly too! Very helpful.

No acknowledgement about several contacts re counselling.

My Radiotherapy contact person contaced MacMillian abut getting counselling for me around 7 weeks ago. I heard nothing. I popped into their office in my local oncology department and a form was filled in, as the one I had phoned in myself a couple of weeks prior was not in the system. That was around three and five weeks ago. NO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. Imagine my surprise then, on doing a Google search, i discovered i could book a telephone wellbeing assessment myself direct. i hve done so. I come from a background of not trusting Macmillan due to how very bad their nurses were on visits to my dying Mother and sister in law in 203 and 4.. both lived nearby to one another in Gloucestershire. I am in East Anglia all these years later. Sorry.. what a let down. At least acknowledge that I have reached out several times due to my distress.
Plese don't lecture me that you are a charit and have finite resources. I know that. i am not asking to jump any queues - I am asking for the common decency of an acknowledgement I and others ahve been in touch about me

Hello Maria, thank you for getting in touch. I am so very sorry that this was your experience when you looked to get counselling, as we had hoped that we had set this up to make it as accessible to those who need this as possible.
Can I please check, have you organised your wellbeing assessment, which is done before the counselling or do you need further support for this?
We would like to look into where your experience broke down and look to improve in the future, as we will be asking for personal details could you email us at feedback@macmillan.org.uk so we can come back to you. Ideally we would need your details, details of the hospital where you had your radiotherapy, and the name of the person if you have this, and details of the office and whom you spoke to so we could investigate what has gone wrong.
If you would like to talk to us about your families experience at the same time Maria, we would like to hear from you. We only have the ability to investigate complaints that have happened within the last two years, as staff and processes change but we can log what has happened so we have a record of areas to look at for improvement.
We look forward to hearing back from you, take care.

Mcmillan really need to stop giving…

Mcmillan really need to stop giving false information about benefits, telling people with cancer that they cannot claim PIP unless they are at deaths door. This is wrong, you don't need to be at deaths door to claim PIP. This is the answer they gave my son when he enquired about it, also telling people with cancer that they can't claim PIP if still working, ofcourse they can. I suggest you get someone working in welfare rights or CAB to work with your people as they haven't got a clue. Or is it they just can't be bothered to help with the forms that need filling out, so give wrong information instead.

I needed to see someone face to face for guidance on how to answer the questions on the form but instead I was referred by Macmillan on to Citizens Advice. What is the point of a Cancer charity that claims to offer support but then refers patients to other services? Their failure to help me just added to my distress. I lost trust that there is support for cancer patients due to Macmillan's response. Having cancer is a dark and lonely journey made worse when you find out that the support advertised is bogus. I hope all the one star reviews shame this organisation into offering meaningful help in the future but it's more likely that this arrogant charity will ignore them just as it treats cancer patients.

Hello Ray, thank you for reaching out to us and sharing your experience. I'm so sorry to read that you were disappointed with the service you received.
As a cancer charity we would love to be in a position where we could offer support and help to everyone, with every question or need that they have. Unfortunately this is not possible as our funds are limited so we have to target certain areas that we can help.
At the moment our National Support Line that can be reached 7 days a week 8am to 8pm on 0808 808 0000, consists of Nurses and Cancer Specialist advisers, and a Money and work team. The money and work team can helps assist with benefits, completing a PIP form, support with energy costs and support around work rights.
If there are areas that our team cannot give you the support you need, we do ensure that our staff have training and support so we can direct you as to where help will be available.
Housing is one of the areas that we currently don't cover and as we have no specialists in this area, we would direct you to the Citizens Advice or a housing charity like Shelter, depending on the query.
I am sorry that you were left disappointed but if you do require support in the areas that I have listed in the future, please do come back to us and we will do all we can to help. Take care.
