Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 275 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people found the user experience to be frustrating and tedious, often describing it as a chore that causes stress and anxiety. They frequently mentioned issues with the product, including poorly explained questions, a lack of personalization, and a system that requires 100% accuracy, leading to repetitive tasks and an inability to move forward without getting every question right. Customers also reported significant problems with the app and website, citing slow loading times, glitches, and an unintuitive interface. The artificial intelligence features were a common source of dissatisfaction, with many feeling that the AI-generated questions were unhelpful, often incorrect, and contributed to the overall difficulty and frustration of the platform.

Absolute bs

Absolute bs. Here’s why:

To officially complete the homework, you need to have answered 100% of the questions correctly. That’s right. There is no room for error. This goes against literally everything we were taught all through our early schooling years. Apparently mistakes are no longer normal and to avoid a one hour detention after school you need to spend three hours sitting at the same question having a mental breakdown over the fact that you couldn’t do something which teachers never taught you.Bookwork checks are an actual nightmare. Part of the homework is that you need to write down a book work code and answer for every single question if you don’t have paper or you’re trying to do your homework on the bus or the train then this doesn’t work at all. Not only that but some of my friends who are dyslexic often write the answers wrong then look back and enter the incorrect answer because of their reading struggles. Punishment for not doing the book work checks correctly is getting more of them over and over again. I am personally horrified with how this platform forces kids to try and do things which they are mentally not prepared for. I have genuinely gone home in tears because my teacher told me that my homework wasn’t complete because I had only done 98%. Not only that but answering questions correct means that you just get hard harder and harder questions. I am in top set maths and even I have struggled on multiple occasions sometimes several times per homework and spent 2+ hours trying to work out one question. Basically, you can’t win at being good at maths or by being bad at maths. The way that this platform has genuinely made me have breakdowns and made me feel so low is despicable. If you are reading this right now then AVOID SPARX MATHS AT ALL COSTS. It will ruin any interest that you ever had in maths. This platform is genuinely horrifying and I’m surprised that it hasn’t been banned in the UK for forcing students into genuine mental breakdown.

I used to like maths.

I am a student. Maths used to interest me before Sparx Maths became the primary maths homework. My decline can be summarised to a few reasons.

- Sparx approach to learning is completely opposite to what every teacher, mentor, and peer will tell you. In their flawed opinion, to do maths and "learn" means getting everything right. They encourage an idea that one hour of learning is enough but this is not enforced by them and biased teachers will still give you a negative point or detention if you struggle to do one question and spend over even 80 minutes "learning."

- When you do need help, just "go to their videos." Oh I wish it were so simple but the videos are often a complete and utter deviation from the subject. This is most common in the niche and difficult subjects in which videos are needed most!

- The algorithm encourages failure, not difficulty. After years of use, you realise that students who need most help are given minimal help from videos and no guarantee of help from teachers. As well as this, students such as myself who are higher level are given the hardest topics. However, these topics can only get so hard and often just push the limits of one question which in some cases is just too difficult and others, it is just a long chore containing no aspect of exam-style multi-step questions. What more? When questions are genuinely difficult, those are ones with the worst and most useless help videos in existence.

- After three (used to be two) attempts of a question, you get a new one of the same topic. If you have ever done maths or learning in general, you'll understand that this is a stupid and pointless decision. Whether I just want to understand what I did wrong in a question or mistyped my third attempt at an answer, this just adds extra burden, wastes time, and has no logical reason behind. It is about as effective to learning as is knocking yourself out with a hammer repeatedly. I cannot bear it and there is a reason why they raised it to three max mistakes. Because it was an illogical policy to begin with.

- If this doesn't already sound like a scandal, here come Bookwork checks. Bookwork checks are my favourite way to torture myself. If you do not use a browser extension; literally made by us teenagers, to bypass bookwork checks, you enjoy watching paint dry while being stabbed. The concept is that you must write down a three digit code as well as each corresponding answer and you will be asked randomly about the answers to a past question. Again, no real point and completely stupid. To add insult to injury, The algorithm makes you complete more checks, taking more of your time if you are already struggling. How "fun."

- Detentions are caused frequently by all of these factors, especially how the "Not all correct = incomplete" policy sort of polarises teachers to think that one question means a lot more that it does while for example, in written homework, getting one question wrong is as simple as just one question wrong. I do not like sparx maths. This is only a summary of my complaints. Thank you for your time.

I would rate 0 stars if I could

If the goal is to make children hate maths or get them to find apps to circumvent book mark checks then this succeeds. If you want to get kids to enjoy and learn something then this fails.

I can't even start with how horrible…

I can't even start with how horrible this platform is. Asking for 100% completion,no wrong answers,is just unrealistic and completely ludicrous. And how are we supposed to remember every single answer for bookwork checks? Sure, you can write it down, but the homework itself is already time consuming enough. I don't have anything positive to say about it. Do better.

They dont help you.

When you struggle on a question instead of helping you they give you a video and even if you don’t understand that and get it wrong they just give a new question similar to the one you just did this website was meant for learning not to make people get detentions and confused about what to do and most of these are kids as well my friend was once put in detention over skipping one sparx reader question which he got a negative and a detention for

Please remove this from existence

This site may have been made for kids to hate learning. As a year 8 student this damn thing has made me lose motivation. The fact there is always one WHOLE QUSETION that makes you get a detention is ridiculous. Some kids are rather using AI instead of doing the work as well. AND THESE BOOKWORK CHECKS ARE USELESS! All you do is make you more annoyed for not writing down TWO WHOLE CHARECTERS!

Why are there so many negative views?

Sparx maths helped me on a lot of things! Not only does it have subjective independent learning, it also tries to help you to get every single question right, which I disagree the people that says it’s bad. It also helped me on the revision of my test and I actually passed. The bookmark checks it’s also pretty important to me, I am confused why are there so many negative reviews, like why?

the depressing website.

If I could give Sparx zero stars, I would. The moment you get a question right, it decides you’re clearly some kind of mathematical prodigy and cranks the difficulty up like it’s training you for the Olympics. One minute you’re doing a normal question, the next you’re basically solving the national debt.

The “personalised learning” feels more like “punishment for knowing things.” Honestly, I’d rather spend 10 minutes in detention staring at a wall than an hour battling Sparx’s endless follow‑up questions. At least the wall doesn’t judge me.
