An equally bad place to work OR have your vehicle serviced.

I was, for a period of about six months, an assistant manager at store #415, East Meadow, New York. I had just returned to the USA from several years abroad in Europe for political asylum in connection with a severe government-sponsored poisoning and other crime during Biden's administration.

It turned out that the suggestion to return home, which had come from my aunt, an elderly NYC-area attorney, was not the right advice. After months living on welfare and trying to get a job with no luck, it was intimated to me by some foreign contacts that the ultimate intention of the US authorities was to have me buy out a nearby German specialist garage belonging to an uncle of mine approaching retirement age, so I might be able to get an automotive job in the meantime. It was then just a matter of finding the one that the corrupt US authorities would allow me into - which, it turns out, had been blanketed all over Nassau County Craigslist for months already.

So, I walked in to the OTHER East Meadow store practically across the street on a Thursday, and basically walked out with an offer to start the following Monday.

Now, I'm not a professional mechanic. I haven't taken any automotive technology training in high school, no community college auto tech degree, no journeyman training, nothing. I just used to own a bunch of nice older cars and work on them myself and occasionally hang out at the garages that I took the cars to. So I do know what I'm doing, but I'm not "on the inside" of the profession. Not at all. Nor did I ever want to be.

Here is what you find out about at Mavis as an employee. Compensation is 100% inverse to performance at Mavis, and the company does not verify immigration status or criminal record. Management are typically incompetent immigrants and other undesirables who either never figure out what's happening at the garages or don't care. The company is constantly being taken to small claims court and the communities retaliate - i.e., I had to set up a microwave and coffee machine at my garage because the techs were being poisoned at every restaurant in the immediate vicinity. The purchasing department does some things well - e.g., the brake hardware Mavis uses is of very good quality - but it's not typically safe to have your brakes done there. Other things they do are crazy. How a major nationwide tire installer can send every car out with wheel weights with such poor adhesive that they fly off the second it reaches highway speed is beyond me.

Then there are the mechanics. Want a brake job where somebody "forgets" to replace the inside pad on one or more wheels so that you run a caliper out until it seizes and has to be replaced 5000 miles later? That's Mavis for you. And if you just get that experience - if they don't pump your brake booster full of air and ruin it - you're lucky.

In a manager or assistant manager role, as I was, it is actually dangerous to try to fix anything related to this problem if you want to keep your job, as the techs will get together and lie about everything to HR to have you fired. Everybody's a beautiful unique snowflake and if they're not getting at least $70k a year they're not doing brakes the right way, period. This is what happened to me, and I was fired with the excuse that I was "threatening employees" in essence by preventing the technicians from victimizing customers. But, nobody in HR ever dared put anything in writing about that.

I don't have many good things to say about Mavis. I will say that the company is very diverse. But management are at a point where the time to start talking to the feds was yesterday about some of the things that go on.

Do not go to Mavis with anything but a totally straightforward problem. New cheap tires on steel wheels, maybe. Flat repairs. Oil changes (they actually use very good oil and filters.) Anything more is just asking for trouble.
