I have long left this company in dust…

I have long left this company in dust since they were acquired by iomart (left at the end of 2021). The nail in the coffin was when they emailed me saying they were moving my VPS to an alternative hardware/network/datacentre. I replied and asked if "they were not going to break things as the last time they did this, it broke IPv6". They responded by saying "we haven't got the IPv6 part figured out yet, so since you've mentioned this, we've taken your VPS off the move list". Just as well I asked them!

So it was at this point, having only 2 months left on my contract, that I realised I needed to jump ship to a new provider that actually offers IPv6, because it became rapidly apparent that iomart don't support this (really?!)

I found an alternative provider, used Memset's snapshot feature to image my VPS's disk, and then transferred this image directly over the internet to my new host's infrastructure. After a bit of tweaking, my VPS was up and running perfectly, without having to do any OS re-installation.

Sometimes all good things come to an end. Memset were excellent for over 10 years up until the point of acquisition by iomart. Judging by the comments here, I got out just in time.

IOMART have ruined Memset

What went wrong? IOMART. Gone from top tier to lowest of the low. Server "suspended" for no reason Xmas eve and NO support whatsoever over the break period, unanswered tickets, calls aren't returned, emergency tickets aren't responded to...

I can't get hold of them at the moment

I can't get hold of them at the moment, no-one is answering the phone and very unresponsive to emails. They've over-charged me and are not giving a refund. I was with them for over 11 years until they got taken over and everything has gone down the pan. Terrible company that forces you to move servers at gun-point with very little help. Avoid.

Really Underwhelming Now

Used to be great, rock solid, fast and helpful. Have used them for 11+ years. Then they got bought out by IOMart and it's been downhill ever since. Currently migrating my remaining servers away from them. Real shame.

All downhill since they were bought out.

Memset was my go-to VPS provider for my clients and my own hosting for many years.

Sadly the new owners, iomart, (Memset didn't bother to tell customers they'd been bought out) are running it into the ground.
Systems failing and over-capacity and the answer is that they are slowly migrating customers to their new parent company's systems.
Despite the issues, they're still wanting to put prices up over 9% for the privilege and can't even count the to 30 to give the appropriate number of days' notice.

Time to shop around.

It's such a shame to see iomart killing off another previously solid VPS provider (see also ByteMark!).

Used to be good until the buyout

We were Memset customers from 2011-2022. They used be excellent but after the Iomart buyout things started to go downhill. Processes such as our daily snapshots kept failing. Wasted a lot of time creating tickets for problems which never existed on the old platform. We were told "We are aware that there are some limitations with the Memset snapshot platform".

To mitigate the problem they told us they would be outsourcing all VPS accounts to a third party (OnApp) and that Iomart would provide support going forward. That rang a lot of alarm bells so we left.

Hugely Disapointing Business Relationship

Initially was charged a huge amount for a very average server, and locked into a 3 year contract when I really needed a new host urgently then they cheekily increased the monthly price about 10%, the performance was poor from the start then reduced over time, when they eventually decided to change hardware was charged £190 for the few minutes it took for them to do it out of hours. The performance never increased, now I am on new hardware (two new servers) the cost of both is below what I paid for the one Memset server and performance is lightening fast compared with slow plod of the Memset servers I had.

Really poor admin when trying to cancel the contract with the website system not giving correct information which lead to problems / confusion.

Wanted to charge me the standard price (nearly £650) per month to continue using their server outside of the contract period (3 years) which is embarrassing beyond words as its possibly worth about £150 per month comparing against similar server specifications, so much for loyal customer (paying over £600 per month for 3 years without missing a payment gets you no loyalty at all)

We also had to suffer a day long outage with zero support where their own website / hosting / phone lines were down, this resulting in myself loosing clients due to the poor support given

explained the renewal cost situation to them and was still not given any reasonable renewal cost options, terrible on every level, avoid.

I would have reviews on Google but it looks like they have removed their Google maps listing to avoid negative reviews I suspect ?

Horrendous communication during a 11hr+…

Horrendous communication during a 11hr+ outage of one of their data centres. (50% of their network) their own site and phone was also down during this time with no way to communicate with them. Totally unacceptable, clearly no disaster recovery process in place.

High Performance and Value for Money VPS

I've been with Memset for a couple of years. They provide some really good value services. I've had a VPS with them all this time to host a number of websites. Anytime I've needed to reach them with support they have been available and helpful. I can really recommend Memset if you want high performance and value for money out of your VPS solution.

Have gone downhill in recent years, shame!

I joined Memset in 2012 and for 5 years+ they were impeccable. Little to no downtime, excellent customer service and good value. Shame that all changed.

Over the last two years the downtime increased and customer service quality dropped. But to top it all the final nail in the coffin was when they stopped being transparent about the issues.

The first downtime I had this year was in the early hours of the morning and Memset decided to not notify any impacted customers. Why? I'm guessing it was in the hope that they didn't notice. They then reported the downtime it was less than the reality. I was awake as I had been alerted by downtime monitoring software that my clients sites were down so I could see exactly how long it was down. I had to argue with them back and forward over tickets to get any kind of compensation for the downtime. They apologised and said they didn't get it right this time but would sort things going forward.

Fast-forward 2.5 Months from incident #1 and we have incident #2 - another period of downtime. This time over 4hrs! They notified customers this time but then decided to update their service status to say service was 'degraded' - Not down, 'degraded'. I don't know what planet their service team lives on but when you have servers down due to hardware failure it's not degraded it's down!

When I questioned them on this, they said:

"Our intent was certainly not to downplay the severity of the incident. We aim to achieve a balance between transparency, and avoiding causing unnecessary alarm which is why we made the decision to classify the incident as a service degradation rather than an outage, as the complete IT service (in this case our Cloud VPS platform) was largely unaffected."

So there you have it, they are not completely transparent about downtime and openly admit this. This is totally unacceptable in this industry and as such I will be cancelling my service with them and no longer recommending them to anyone going forward.

Since the most resent incident they have even gone back and edited the downtime from previous months to show as 'degraded service' when it previous used to show the downtime clearly - This is deception, plain and simple no matter how you word it.

Sorry Memset but unless you go back to the quality service you used to provide I would imagine others will be leaving too.

I could have forgiven the first time but after the second time the proverb "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me" comes to mind.
