Arrogant, unprofessional, disrespectful and in our opinion also incompetent
The owner of this company, Michael Wagstaff, came to do a building survey on our house on behalf of our purchasers. From the moment he arrived he was aloof and arrogant, showing no respect for us or our house - he wandered around the house leaving lights on and windows open, making no effort to leave things how he found them. He left our double garage wide open for nearly the whole day with thousands of pounds worth of bikes and goods on display for all and sundry passing by. Worst of all, he proceeded to pull up the corners of all of our brand new fitted carpets without even having the basic manners to ask our permission, and in complete contravention of the RICS code of practice which clearly states that surveyors "will not lift carpets".
Mr Wagstaff asked if he could take photos - when asked what they were for, he clearly stated they were just for his own reference and recollection when writing the report. In fact they were all included in the actual survey report to the buyers - that probably wouldn't have been an issue but it's just dishonest and disingenuous, a complete lack of courtesy and professionalism.
As for the quality of his work, he reported the flat roof on our property as having "signs of significant moss growth and breakdown of the bitumen coating which could be resulting in damp ingress" and said it should be replaced. The two roofing companies who came to quote for the work both stated the roof and its coating were absolutely fine and didn't require any work whatsoever, not even the moss needed removing. In our opinion, that just makes his opinion incompetent.
Mr Wagstaff's arrogance continued when we wrote to his company to complain about his behaviour at our property and damage to the brand new carpets - he simply stated he "did not believe any damage was caused to our carpets by his actions". The fact the carpets weren't even fixed back onto the grippers and loose strands of carpet just left on top (!) is pretty clear evidence to the contrary.
In summary I can't remember a worse "tradesperson" in 30 years of owning houses, someone who behaved so unprofessionally and just had a complete lack of respect.
