Absolutely Awful 'Spa Day' Avoid

This is not even worth the one star!

I booked a Spa Day with 2 treatments and from arrival was nothing but a massive dissappointment:

1. Arrival was very robotic grouped with others to sit and wait for a 'tour' whilst listening to cafe staff chattering and hot tub guests noisy in an over crowded pool.
2. Tour was literally an arm point in various directions.
3. Changing rooms small, stuffy and toilets dirty. Lockers impossible to get one to work and so small having to reach over other guests. Showers were a dribble impossible to wash properly.
4. Through to the 'Spa'.... A tiny pool in a dark room, slippy floors, dirty tiles and loungers so close i was swimming into guest feet really disgusting. The hot tub in this room was full with about 8 loud people and the foot Spa is 2 raised sinks that you sit either side of! Really not personal especially for lone guests. Steam room so small it held up and close about 4 people and I didn't even look in the steam room as people loud. Basically that's it for the 'Spa'
5. Sleep room should of been snore room and there were no beds available so had to sit in a wicker nest on a tiny cushion whilst another guest snored behind me.
6. 4 attempt to try the outdoor hot tub but it was rammed with people taking root from arrival and having endless drinks brought to them
7. Restaurant I walked out as my basic salad order never arrived so gave up. No drinks offered and sat in the middle of the room feeling uncomfortable.
8. Treatments I felt like I was being slapped with oil in a rushed massage. Facial felt like I was being scrubbed and slapped.
I could go on but honestly would of left after 1 hour had I not got treatments booked. Worst Spa visit I have ever had.

Very poor

1 welcome was very poor
2 tour of venue missed half facilities out so was unaware of indoor pool, steam room, and outdoor plunge
3.bathrooms were filthy, faeces in toilet in restaurant,
4.restaurant floors dirty food everywhere
5. Hair in food, nothing offered complimentary ie free drinks considering half my meal had been left
6. Service slow
7. Spa was noisy, people shouting, doors banging, fans on and off, very hot rooms, music playing in room and in reception, very hard yo relax, massage therapist was going over bone quite heavily, beds very uncomfortable, left with a migraine, my friend felt faint and reported the same position of the bed and left with swollen face and eyes
8. Sleep/relaxation room had wet towels and used blankets on majority of beds, wonder when these get replaced for other guests
9. Lockers were a joke the fob things didn't work we spent an hour trying to find a locker to work, changing rooms were rammed at all times
10. At check out amazed to see service added for a couple of drinks and not one member of the team asked us about our day/experience. Tbf I was ready to leave. Very dissppointed.
Nothing unique or relaxing about moddershall like a conveyor belt.

A stunning venue but shocking afternoon tea

A stunning venue and set up for my friends baby shower but the £35 we paid each (30+ of us) for an afternoon tea wasn’t worth it. Three dry triangles of dried bread and a couple of dry cakes were shocking . The worst afternoon tea I’ve ever had. We were asked once for a tea or coffee.

Unfriendly and unwelcoming

From first arriving, immediately nothing felt warm or welcoming. Someone was checking in ahead of us so we waited only a couple of seconds but the girl who called us over didn't even look up, I wasn't sure if she was even speaking to us at first. She took our names and my card and asked if we'd been here before (we hadn't) we were then sat down to fill out our forms and given a drink-- which was nice. We then headed back to reception as asked and took the spa forms with us - this time a different member of staff, again no warmth or a smile, just said you need to keep those to take to your treatment and asked if we had one booked? We were given no information of the location of anything ie: where the spa was, treatment rooms were, or where the restaurant is, how to access the outdoor pool, where the private pool is. Literally nothing. We were given a slip of paper with our key with some opening times on it.

The rooms are warm and decorated nicely with all amenities and little touches - this has not gone unnoticed. However we quickly noticed there were no flip flops or slippers in the room. Which i know is not unusual these days with hotels being more environmentally friendly, however this was not mentioned in any of the booking process to either make sure you bring some (lots of hotels make this known) or we can provide some at a cost, which wasn't communicated to us at check in. I called down to reception, as I had already got changed I had to ask reception if they wouldn't mind bringing them up - which appeared to be a big inconvenience.

We had a treatment booked for 4:30pm but having not been told where to go we headed back to reception only to be sent back the other way. After the treatment we wanted to use the spa, I asked for a couple of towels and the reception staff were ust leant on the wall and said they're over there just take them yourself. No smile, no warmth, just made to feel like I was an nconvenience for asking for a towel.

The spa is nice but no idea where or if there is a sauna, another guest also said the same thing to me when she overheard me looking for it. The outdoor pool was a nice touch but again we weren't told where it was or any info.

We headed up to the bar for a drink before dinner, again the decor is lovely and a great setting. The girl behind the bar was nice. However there were 3 young men at the bar who appeared to know the girl working, not sure if they were staff having a drink after work but they were loud, swearing and having phone calls on loud speaker.

The dining experience is where the wheels really came off. We were seated promptly and our order was taken swiftly. However that was where it ended. While I appreciate that it was a busy evening, 90 minutes after being seated and receiving only our starters — along with a single drink offered at the beginning — falls well below acceptable service standards. I eventually raised my concerns with the host/restaurant manager, who appeared genuinely perplexed when I explained the situation - which only highlighted his lack of attention and awareness of the restaurant. Within minutes of doing so, our mains arrived. While that may have been a coincidence, the condition of the steak suggests otherwise. It was completely dry and cooked well done, despite us ordering it medium rare. This leads me to believe it had been sitting at the pass for a considerable time and had continued to cook itself before being served.
Aside from the young man working behind the bar, the service team appeared largely disengaged. Several waitresses were standing around talking while basic service tasks were overlooked. The couple seated next to us waited approximately 30 minutes just to receive their bread and oil, and their table remained uncleared for at least another 30 minutes after finishing their mains. Interestingly, once they requested the bill, the card machine appeared within seconds — which unfortunately speaks volumes about the priorities demonstrated that evening: minimal customer care, yet impressive efficiency when it came to taking payment.
Frankly, I would be embarrassed if this were the standard of service delivered by my staff — particularly as part of a £700 spa package experience. With The Tawny just up the road, whose service I have always found to be impeccable, you either need to significantly improve your standards or reconsider your pricing structure.

Atrocious Service

I don't know whether I kicked Santa in the shin in a past life, but I must be on the naughty list to be put through that absolute nightmare of a Santa visit.

We arrived on time for our Santa's breakfast and shown to our table. So far so good.
We sat at our table for over an hour before someone comes up to us, "What would you like for breakfast?" I'm asked.
"I don't know, what's on offer?" I reply.
"Oh don't you have a menu?!"
She brings us a menu and says that she'll give us some time to review - frankly there were 4 things on the menu, it didn't require long. 20 minutes later she returns and takes our order.

Another hour passes without so much as a crumb appearing. Eventually the food arrives, my son is given the incorrect food, but at this point we are all ravenous so we just eat. Clearly everything had been under a heat lamp, but beggars can't be choosers.

We then site for, you guessed it, yet another hour of waiting to be let in to see Santa - we are the last people in the restaurant, music is turned off and tables are being dissembled around us. Really comfortable.

Santas had a long day, he cannot remember my daughter's name for the life of him, but that's a part of the charm I guess.
Lastly it comes to the presents. They have run out of presents for older children and they have to have younger presents, two books that they are clearly both far too old for. But at this point I just wanted to leave all of this behind and forget about it all.

£20 admin fee for amending a booking date?!!

I have visited Moddershall oaks several times in recent years for spa days and overnight stays with friends and family and always had a great experience. Unfortunately i had a different experience today. I had used gift vouchers to book an afternoon spa for myself and my mum but realised that i had got the dates wrong. I called back within 7 days to amend the date (the booking was 7 weeks away) to be informed that there would be a £20 admin fee!! £20 for changing a date on the system which took less than 60 seconds?! The voucher had 4 months left on it to book and the booking was 7 weeks away! I was told by the person on the phone that they would have given this information on the call at the time of booking (this hadn’t happened) and that they could ‘listen to the recording of the call to check!’ So rude and unexpected! They returned my call after listening to the recording of the original call (very insulting) to inform me that in fact, I hadn’t been given that information on the call at the time of booking.

Whilst i appreciate T&C’s need to be in place so that people aren’t calling all the time to make changes and amendments, calling once to change a booking which is 7 weeks away should not incur an admin fee in my opinion. So disappointed with how this was handled on the call also, very insulting.

False promises

I had booked afternoon so I thought, After finally finding the restaurant through a maze of narrow corridors, thinking we were in the spa. We were told we hadn't booked afternoon tea, just a table?
Obviously disappointed but reassured by the staff there was cake!
Ordered our food , came out looking really good, but the chicken was tough and the bacon was to hard to cut. The chips were ok when warm but awful when cold. We then had to call a member of staff to get another drink and they asked if we wanted the desert menu. After waiting over an hr no one had been to us to take the order, we went to the bar to find out if they were still serving,as it had been so long , just to be told yeah, and oh. When they had all finished their chats at the bar and decided to come over to us, we didn't want a pudding off there menu, we said we would have some cake which we had been told they had, only to be told we dont have cake, and they wanted the table back in half an hr, because being the only people in the restaurant maybe there wasn't enough empty tables?
After chatting we decided to leave and a waitress came over and said do you guys need a room for the night, I felt like saying, we wouldnt still be here if any staff wanted to wait on us.
On leaving, walking out through the maze of corridors with everybody in robes. We noticed at the spa reception area, there was a selection of sandwich cakes for sale, under glass domes. Strange as we had been told there was none left?
The place looks nice, food not so , staff even worse.

Blissful

Blissful! Myself and 3 friends booked in for a spa day package and had the most amazing time. We were welcomed with a lovely drink on arrival and got straight into the outdoor hot tub where staff were very attentive asking if we wanted any further drinks brought over. Our lunch was a real highlight, served to us by the lovely Lori who made us feel so comfortable and went the extra mile to make our experience so special to celebrate my friends birthday too. Can’t praise her enough! We also had treatments too which were amazing. I had Emma give me a very relaxing hot stone massage and she was so lovely too. Would certainly recommend to anyone!

Absolute perfection!!!

Booked an all day spa day with two treatments each and two course lunch for myself and my mother in law following a very tough 12months!

Around two weeks prior to our visit I was contacted by the spa to inform me that some work would be going on externally during our planned visit and we were given the option to move our date or keep the existing booking with some added extras as a gesture of good will, which consisted of: a free treatment each and upgrade to a three course lunch with drink, PLUS a discount on a return visit with a free treatment each on that visit too!!

We decided to keep our existing booking due to work schedules and hoped the external work wouldn’t be too disruptive to our day.

Boy are we glad we kept the existing booking!!! The external work caused no disruption at all…. Even when sitting outside the noise levels were minimal!!

Upon arrival we were greeted by very helpful receptionists who explained everything to us and brought us our welcome drink whilst we filled out our forms (elderflower spritz was delicious) we were then given a quick tour and we headed to the changing room to get ready for our first treatment.

We had three treatments each spread throughout the day and we had three different staff members for each of our treatments (I didn’t take note of names unfortunately) all of the treatments were INCREDIBLE and the staff were wonderful!! Each treatment left us feeling TOTALLY blissful!!

After our first treatment we headed to the indoor spa area and took full advantage of the steam room, experience shower, jacuzzi pool and heated loungers before heading to the restaurant to get lunch, which was absolutely delicious!! We were stuffed by the time we finished! The vibe in the restaurant was totally chilled and we didn’t feel at all rushed, the view of the pond was so tranquil and all dishes came out promptly and well prepared! The waiting staff were very good at checking in on us, clearing our plates and bringing drinks.

Following lunch we waddled over to the outside spa area, at that time there was absolutely no ground works going on (I’m assuming the workmen were on their lunch breaks) the sauna was great and the outside jacuzzi pool was a perfect temperature! There was an abundance of sun loungers available and thankfully the weather was beautiful so we were able to enjoy a little sunshine in these glorious surroundings also!

Following our second treatment we headed to the sleep room which was like stepping into a cuddle!! The room was dimly lit with a central fire roaring surrounded by an abundance of cozy options to settle into, we chose the egg chairs and happily dozed there until it was time for our final treatments.

We finished the day by stepping back into the steam room and experience shower followed by a little sunbathing (by this time work had resumed but the noise was minimal and barley noticeable over the ambient music playing).

It really was a perfect and relaxing day and we are both looking forward to returning again soon!!

Staff, facilities, food and treatments were all fantastic…. No it isn’t cheap BUT you get what you pay for!! Also worth a mention is the showers…. They are fantastic!! Great water pressure, perfect temperature and the soaps and shampoos etc that are provided smell DEVINE!! So much so I bought the entire set!! 😂😂

The only con of the day was the lockers in the changing room. A few of them don’t actually work and mine ended up locking me out at the end of the day!! I had to get a member of staff to override it so I could get my belongings out! 🙈😂 but apart from that the entire day went without a hitch.

Disappointed by Poor Communication and Lack of Transparency

The day itself was fine overall. The treatments were average — nothing particularly memorable — and my friend’s Indian head massage was well below expectations. Lunch was okay, but the service was slow and we waited far too long for our food. What also stood out was the fact that no drinks were included with lunch, which feels unfair given the cost of a full spa day experience.

However, the real issue — and the reason for this review — was the poor communication around additional charges. We were told that no extras would be charged, yet we were later informed that payment had already been taken without our knowledge. There was no clear explanation provided at the time on the processes.

What’s most frustrating is the refusal to take responsibility for this lack of transparency. Rather than owning the error or acknowledging the miscommunication, we were met with defensive responses and no offer of resolution. It felt as though this situation was managed in a way that prioritised the business’s convenience over fairness to the customer — and that comes across as deliberate.

For a spa that claims to offer a premium experience, this handling was completely unacceptable. I left feeling frustrated and let down. I will not be returning to Moddershall Oaks, and I would not recommend it to others based on this experience

The Oak House Restaurant
Redefining the Word "mediocre."

Our family first visited The Oak House on a quiet weekday evening in January to celebrate our granddaughter’s 20th birthday. The food and service were excellent, and I didn’t hesitate to recommend it to several friends.
Encouraged by that experience, our daughter booked a table for us once again—this time to celebrate my birthday last night, which was a Saturday. Unfortunately, the experience couldn't have been more different.
We placed our order shortly after arriving. Among the starters, we ordered two portions of warm rustic breads with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. After a 45-minute wait, the starters finally arrived—one portion short and the other missing the balsamic. We pointed this out to a young staff member, who brought the missing order shortly after. Sadly, this came with cold bread instead of the originally listed “warm rustic” version. The same applied to the first serving: cold toast with no balsamic.
When the mains arrived, my ribeye steak was cooked to my preference, but that was the only highlight. It was tough, gristly, and difficult to enjoy. The grilled tomatoes were burnt and cold, and the chips were also both cold and burnt a perfect duo.
When my daughter asked how it was, I didn’t want to seem ungrateful, so I simply said the steak was good but the vegetables were slightly cold.
As the meal progressed, it became clear that everyone at the table was very disappointed. All plates were left unfinished, and we all decided to skip dessert. It became apparent that we were all disappointed.Despite the mistake with the starter, both portions were still included on the bill.
Prior to this experience, we had considered booking a private room for our granddaughter’s 21st birthday next January. That plan is now off the table. There’s simply no excuse for a restaurant that claims to be high quality with prices to match to serve subpar food.
It occurred to me that perhaps the staff were overwhelmed due to a large event elsewhere in the building, leaving the main restaurant understaffed and neglected. Regardless, this kind of service and quality is unacceptable.
Sadly, this was our last visit to The Oak House.

Very little privacy as you have to walk…

Very little privacy as you have to walk in a bathrobe past open glazed patio windows alongside the carpark and through reception. Staff including groundsman and security are perving on you. If you are looking for a relaxing private spa...this is Not a go to. There are plenty in the counties of Staffordshire & Shropshire

Probably the rudest staff we have ever…

Probably the rudest staff we have ever encountered.

We arrived out of the blue on passing as we were staying locally at Alton Towers and decided a pamper day might be good. We had our swim gear already in the car as we will wild swim where the opportunity allows.

Anyhow we arrived in reception to be met by a lady with an ultra sturn face! Rather than say hello or ask how we were she simply barked NAME!

I explained we didn't have a booking and hoped there'd be room at the last minute. This time she smirked and said, our treatments are booked in advance. I reminded her that I didn't ask about a treatment but the use of the facilities.

Rather than acknowledge our point she did some typing (reminiscent of the computer says no sketch from Little Britain). She then came back with a price which I think was something like £109.00 (I think). Before even confirming we wanted to accept or not she spoke over our shoulders to a house keeper behind about something and followed up with text me later. Utterly unprofessional.

The time was around 2pm at this point so we didn't feel as though wed have value for money at that point.

In all honesty her matter was gross and put us off anyway. Instead we got back the hotel and booked H.oar Cross Hall the next day which was PHENOMENAL.

The service was super friendly and welcoming and the facilities second to none. What a shame the staff member at Moddershall Oaks pushed us to a competitor instead, still win, win for us!

Incredible

Me and my wife had our wedding at moddershall on Thursday 25.4.24.
All we can say is wow!! From beginning to end the staff were absolutely phenomenal, pulling out all of the stops and making our whole day run smoothly, particularly Gemma and Mason (thank you both so much).
Also the spa experience the following day was incredible, just what we needed to wind down and relax after all of the madness.
We already can’t wait to book a nice spa break here for our first wedding anniversary.

Amazing gem of a place

What's not to love? The setting is beautiful and tranquil. Though open for day and evening spa experiences there are only ten rooms so a wonderful peaceful choice for an overnight stay. Facilities are clean and well maintained, with gym and classes also available at the Made Wellness centre. Indoor and outdoor hot tubs (including one you can privately book for your party). There's a good range of treatments available. The food is excellent. We had several allergies in our party and both the restaurant and the deli were able to adapt meals so that no one missed out. I can't rate the staff highly enough, all very friendly, seemed to genuinely enjoy working there and showed great initiative. Will definitely be going back.

As a wedding photographer

As a wedding photographer, I recently had the privilege of capturing a beautiful wedding at the luxury country retreat in Staffordshire. The 72-acre private countryside setting was breathtaking and provided the perfect backdrop for the couple's special day.

The first class indoor and outdoor spa facilities, as well as the spa treatments offered in the cosy former farmhouse, added an extra layer of luxury and relaxation for the couple and their guests. The lakeside dining in the newly refurbished restaurant, The Oak House, was stunning, and the Balcony Bar overlooking the private lake and woodlands was the perfect spot for pre-dinner drinks.

The venue itself was top-notch and provided a first-class setting for the wedding ceremony and reception. The couple was able to fully customize the event space to their liking, and the staff were attentive and professional throughout the day.

The various day and evening spa packages offered were a real highlight, and the outdoor pool and spa facilities were a true oasis for the guests. For those looking for an even more indulgent experience, the 5-star luxury boutique suites with private terraces and premium spa products in the bathroom were truly exceptional.

In conclusion, the luxury country retreat provided the perfect setting for this beautiful wedding. From the spa facilities to the dining options to the venue itself, every detail was well thought out and executed flawlessly. I would highly recommend this venue for anyone looking for an indulgent spa stay or a special event location.

Kindest regards
The Kensington Photographer
