I purchased a car from Motorshift Ltd…

I purchased a car from Motorshift Ltd for £7,000 and have had nothing but problems since.

Within weeks of buying the car, it developed an oil leak. Even though the car came with a warranty, Motorshift has failed to pay the garage for the repair work, leaving me stuck with the bill.

Now, just 3-4 months after purchase, the car has developed a coolant system leak / belt problems/ oil presure issue which was not solved on first attempt to fix issue - the second major fault in a matter of months. The car has been undrivable twice in this short period.

For £7,000, I expected a reliable vehicle, not one that breaks down every few weeks. When I've tried to resolve this with Motorshift, they haven't taken responsibility or honored the warranty they sold me.

This has been an extremely stressful and costly experience.

I would not recommend Motorshift Ltd to anyone. A used car dealership should stand behind what they sell, especially when they offer a warranty. Very disappointed.

Skoda Karoq

The car was exactly as described, spotless inside and out, fully serviced and ready to go. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and never pushy. They answered all my questions, gave me a fair price part-exchange price and even helped sort out paperwork quickly.

STAY AWAY

I have encountered numerous issues with this company, beginning with a delay of nearly a month. Subsequently, I discovered several missing items, including the boot mat, parcel shelf, and drinks divider. Additionally, there were broken components near the mirror, a damaged sun visor, and a malfunctioning light. I also had to replace the battery, as the incorrect one was installed, rendering the stop-start function inoperable and preventing the vehicle from starting. The vehicle was delivered in an unacceptably dirty condition, with the cream interior being heavily soiled. Furthermore, the mileage was inaccurate, and there is now a knocking sound from the rear. Despite promises that parts would be sent, my communications have since been ignored. I intend to escalate this matter. I strongly advise against engaging with this company.

Motorshift – Hidden Defects, “Cleansing MOT”, and Legal Threats via Lawgistics Review

I purchased a vehicle from Motorshift in January 2025, and my experience has raised serious concerns about transparency, safety, and consumer treatment.
Prior to collection, I was explicitly told by a member of staff at Motorshift that I could not collect the vehicle as planned because it was “going through an MOT.” I was told it had “failed on minor items” which were then “addressed.” A fresh MOT was issued immediately before collection, despite the vehicle already having a valid MOT from August 2024, creating a clear impression that the vehicle was roadworthy.
Almost immediately:
The clutch failed on the day of collection
Ongoing oil leaks were identified
Later inspections identified serious exhaust corrosion and splitting
An independent ACE-appointed engineer refused to drive the vehicle due to foreseeable mechanical risk, confirming it is unsafe
Despite this:
Motorshift have never requested to inspect the vehicle
They have not challenged or investigated the independent findings
They disengaged rather than addressing the defects
Instead of constructive engagement, I was contacted by Lawgistics, acting on Motorshift’s behalf. Their correspondence stated, among other things:
“Any further contact should be directed through us.”
“You are not permitted to contact our client directly.”
This was accompanied by warnings regarding costs and legal consequences.
As a consumer raising legitimate safety concerns, this felt less like dispute resolution and more like an attempt to intimidate and deter further communication, rather than investigate whether a dangerous vehicle had been supplied.
I was also advised by Motorshift not to take the vehicle to a main dealer, which in hindsight raises additional concerns given the seriousness of the defects later uncovered.
I am now left with a financed vehicle that an independent engineer has deemed unsafe to drive, ongoing unavoidable costs, and no meaningful engagement from the supplying dealer.
The matter is now with the Financial Ombudsman Service.
I am sharing this experience so others can make an informed decision.

Response to Trustpilot – Clarification of Objection Scope

Motorshift’s objection relates solely to the naming of an individual staff member, not to the accuracy of the review or the condition of the vehicle supplied.

The substance of the review — including the vehicle defects, the independent engineer’s findings that the vehicle was unroadworthy, and the subsequent handling of the matter — has not been disputed.

I have amended the review to remove the individual’s name while retaining an accurate, factual account of my experience as a consumer.

Update March 2026;

I purchased a Vauxhall Astra (SM64 JWW) supplied by Motorshift, and shortly after purchase the vehicle developed serious faults including issues with the exhaust system consistent with corrosion and leakage.
What is particularly concerning is that the MOT history shows advisories relating to exhaust leakage and corrosion as far back as 2021, and again in 2024 prior to sale. This indicates that the issues were developing over a significant period and were not new or unexpected faults.
An independent inspection later confirmed deterioration consistent with long-term wear rather than something arising during my ownership.
Despite this, Motorshift declined to take responsibility and instead directed me to the finance company. This left me dealing with ongoing issues while the vehicle was frequently unusable and ultimately returned.
The vehicle has not been in my possession since January, yet I remain financially impacted as a result of how this situation has been handled.
Based on my experience, I would strongly advise others to carefully review MOT histories and ensure that any advisories are fully investigated before purchasing.

I was actually about to purchase a car…

I was actually about to purchase a car from motor shift but not now I won’t be!
I saw a nice looking car there as well but I always look into the reviews first and it’s how many bad experiences that customers have experienced.
I am looking for a good reliable no quibble trouble free experience and Arnold Clark seem to have it all , so their reviews look like.
I can’t believe it when brokers advertise cars for dealerships with bad reviews.
Like another dealership I saw a car from and there are some bad very believable reviews there also.

My son saw a car he liked on Autotrader…

My son saw a car he liked on Autotrader so decided to go look. Upon arrival the car had done more miles than advertised. We viewed the vehicle and noticed a few little bits need sorting. We was told it would have a new MOT put on it and 2 New tyres plus a valet. Went to collect vehicle and they had put 2 part worn tyres on it not even matching and 1 a summer tyre and 1 a winter tyre. Wtf? Car had not even been washed on the outside and was filthy inside, no valet been done. Was also told fuel would be put in and soon as we left the deisel light was on. I then didn't believe they had done a service on it at all. Told my son not to purchase it at all. Salesman full of crap and no customer satisfaction what so ever if that's how they treat you and hand over vehicles. I would say they are good at taking your money for the sale but full of empty promises. Stay away from these cowboys you have been warned. DO NOT USE THESE AT ALL COSTS.

SCAMMERS WORST SERVICE EVER! STAY AWAY!

Scammers.
This has been an absolute nightmare from day one. I was assured the car was in perfect condition and guaranteed that it would never be handed over without full testing. I was told everything was up to date, including a genuine MOT, and that there was no need for an independent inspection. I trusted them — and I deeply regret it.
The car broke down within ONE DAY of receiving it.
I was reassured it would be fixed “as fast as possible,” yet I was not allowed to cancel the agreement and was constantly dismissed with excuses. Calls were rarely answered, and every time I did get through, I was told the same thing: “the manager isn’t here.”
When the car was finally returned the first time, I was reassured again that everything had been properly fixed and tested. Despite those assurances, the car broke down again within two days. They failed me a second time — meaning I gave them two chances, and both times they let me down.
They took the car back again, claiming they still needed to “collect parts,” assuring me it “wouldn’t take long.” I was promised a courtesy car if the repairs took longer — I never received one. Not even once.
It has now been FIVE MONTHS since day one, and I have been left without a working car the entire time.
Because of this, I was forced to spend a huge amount of money renting another vehicle and paying additional insurance, as I couldn’t transfer my policy. This situation has caused serious financial stress.
One colleague, Fin, was never available. Every single call came with an excuse that he was “not in the office,” which felt completely intentional.
Before returning the car the first time, the manager claimed it had been test-driven — which is shocking, considering it broke down almost immediately again.
I was promised I would get my car back by the end of November. That never happened. It is now mid-December, and instead of taking responsibility, they are blaming me, claiming the damage was caused by speeding — without any proof, with misleading information, refusing to clearly explain the issue, and refusing to show me the report, stating they will only send it to the finance company.
The lack of communication, accountability, transparency, and basic customer care is unbelievable. This experience has been misleading, exhausting, and financially damaging.
If you value your time, money, or sanity — DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY.
They will keep your car, break promises, avoid your calls, and leave you paying for problems that are not your fault.
Scammers.
