I gave MovableType.ai a shot, and was happy I did

I decided to give MovableType.ai a shot, and was happy I did. I came across their advertisement on Facebook, and after watching the demo I was sold.

I've been trying to write my book for a while now and couldn't seem to structure it all the right way, not to my satisfaction, at least.

This tool, if anything, got me past the "planning stage". It saved me months of researching, structuring, outlining and coming up with the right frameworks and processes for the content. More importantly, it got me past the "analysis paralysis stage" that was holding back progress.

Pretty impressive output, too. I'd imagine it'll continue getting better as the technology matures.

No, it's not the "magic button" for publishing books. It does take work. I did some significant editing to make it my own, and to avoid being flagged for using AI on various platforms. But it got me there faster, and more effeciently. It helped transform my 'chicken scratch' graveyard into a materialized manuscript that I can work with.

If anything, I'd recommend it just for that: The planning phase. As for the manuscript, audiobook generation, text translation, and marketing materials for promoting your book -- and everything else it comes with? I'd say those features are just the cherry on top :)

Last thing I'll say is, as of now, it only specializes in non-fiction books, so I'd keep that in mind before buying with intentions of writing a novel or memoir.

Other than that, I highly recommend!

Great idea, terrible execution & support

Great idea, terrible execution. The fake live webinar and non-working earlybird lead form should have been my first clue. I really wanted to like this and for it to work. It just doesn't. Half-baked and overpriced. 5% substance and 95% marketing hype that we all hope will work. Just use ChatGPT. It will take as long and the output will be better.

Save yourself the time and money

Save yourself the time and money. The product will produce a "book" with a lot of redundancy and flowery metaphors and basic garbage writing. It takes a lot of editing to get anything you'll want to present to the public. That's the first issue.

Secondly, when asking to cancel and refund (within a few hours of the charge) they will keep over 10% of your money and say it is their "Stripe" fees that aren't refunded. If they are dumb enough to pay over 10% in credit card processing fees, at least 3 times the usual, do you really want to work with a company that accepts that?

Move away from MovableType if you want any value for your money

I have just cancelled my subscription to MovableType for a multitude of reasons.
The marketing team at MT does a good job of convincing users that their platform will produce books based on your input. It actually does do that, kind of, except that the content that it produces is garbage. No matter what or how you enter your parameters in the input, the output is nothing more than a puffed-up, wordy sequence of words that are mostly adverbs, complex words that not even Einstein would use, metaphors, double talk and outright lies or fabrications. Content that is completely unusable with extensive editing. If I have to restructure, research, and rewrite the entire book then what did I pay for?
Maybe I paid to have some sort of customer support with the issues that I encounter with their product, except that isn't true in this case. User support is a joke. The portal to submit a ticket for an issue will let you type out your issue and will send you an email confirmation that it was received. and then you will wait, and wait, and never get a response. You will be effectively ignored. Until you post your gripe on the slack space, then you will get a personal response and you'll be assured that the issue will be addressed and they will follow up. Try that and see how far it gets you. maybe you'll get farther than I did, which wasn't very far.
My conclusion is that MovableType is simply another attempt to use AI technology to develop their program and get you to pay for that development without the having the benefit. Which would probably be ethically ok if they disclosed thagt in beginning, but no, they tell you nothing, then ignore you when you try to use what you paid to use and the product simply does not do what it claims to do.
I lost $400 to learn that MT is garbage. Don't waste your time unless you like giving away your money with no expectation of a return of any kind.
