Musitek Corporation, based in Ojai, California, develops specialized music-recognition software for Macintosh and Windows computers. Founded in 1991, the company pioneered commercial optical music recognition with MIDISCAN for Windows in 1993 and introduced SmartScore for Windows and Macintosh in 1996. Today, Musitek’s desktop product line centers on SmartScore 64 and Music-to-XML, both powered by the company’s proprietary Prodigy Engine recognition technology. SmartScore 64 is Musitek’s full-featured music-scanning and notation environment. It converts printed sheet music, scanned pages, PDF files and TIFF images into editable digital scores. Unlike a simple conversion utility, SmartScore combines optical music recognition with score editing, playback, transposition, part extraction, page formatting and printing. It recognizes notation as well as lyrics, text, chord symbols and other score elements, depending on the edition. Users can correct recognition results, rearrange music, isolate instrumental or vocal parts, change key or clef, and create newly formatted scores. Completed projects can be exported as MusicXML for use in other notation programs, as MIDI for sequencing and playback, as PDF for printing and distribution, or as MP3 audio. SmartScore 64 is offered in several editions, including Professional, Songbook, MIDI, Piano and Guitar, allowing users to select capabilities suited to orchestral scores, vocal and keyboard music, MIDI production, piano literature or guitar notation and tablature. Current versions support Windows 11 and modern Macintosh systems, including native Apple-silicon Macs. Music-to-XML is a streamlined desktop application for musicians who primarily want to transfer printed music into another notation program. It accepts PDF scores, scanned files and images captured with mobile devices, recognizes the musical notation and converts it directly into the MusicXML interchange format. The resulting file can be opened in applications such as Dorico, Sibelius, MuseScore, Notion and many other MusicXML-compatible programs. With supported applications, converted music can open automatically after recognition. Music-to-XML uses the same core recognition technology as SmartScore 64 but omits SmartScore’s extensive notation editing, playback, score-layout and production tools. It is therefore positioned as a fast, affordable bridge between printed sheet music and a user’s preferred notation software. Together, the two products address complementary needs: Music-to-XML provides direct conversion, while SmartScore 64 offers a complete workspace for recognizing, correcting, editing, playing, arranging and publishing musical scores. Both products are designed for arrangers, performers, educators, choir directors, students and music publishers seeking to avoid laborious manual note entry while preserving the structure of printed scores for further creative, instructional or archival use.
