North Somerset is an amazing county with natural beauty, wonderful people and SO much going for it! It’s such a pity that it’s NOT served by North Somerset Council. I am originally from South Africa where all of our councils are considered to be failed, in financial distress, and most are under some form of rescue intervention - but they STILL offer better service delivery than NSC.

Despite claiming to be a “green” council that cares for the environment, North Somerset is one of the filthiest places I have ever been! Litter and fly tipping is out of control in every village with zero council intervention or policing.

The A38/Colliters Way main corridor from Bristol International Airport into the city is strewn with discarded mattresses, furniture, fly tips and other litter and has not been cleaned since pre-Covid. Since Bristol Airport is the ONLY major airport in the UK with no mass transit service, every single one of the 12 million passengers every year is greeted by this filthy freeway on arrival as they travel by bus, taxi or car since this is the only route into Bristol. Every time the council contractors cut the A38 verges, they do not pick up a scrap of litter and simply mow right over the discarded suitcases, empty ad-blue containers, plastic bag and bottles and other plastic items which are chopped into ever-finer microplastics each year which pollute the many streams and lands in North Somerset. My email on this to our local councillor was not even dignified with a response of any sort.

I have raised all the above in writing, on several occasions with our local councillor - Green Party candidate and apparently the NSC “Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment” whose responsibilities are described on the NSC websites as “climate and nature emergency and ecological recovery.” Whilst I have written responses from NSC agreeing that the situation is untenable, are responsible for delivering these services AND committing to cleaning by March last year, no-one has lifted a finger. It falls on a tiny group of village volunteers to try and keep our village litter free and clear of fly tips. We haul off mattresses, bags filled with poopy nappies, urine-filled plastic bottles left by airport lay-by waiters and taxi drivers, large nitrous oxide and other gas canisters and similar hazardous waste with NSC never lifting a finger!

Naturally NSC has been granted an exemption to raise council tax by 9% for this year and there will STILL be no service delivery by this truly failed entity.
