Dangerous toxic products and poor customer service

Ordered two Carmel bedside tables that arrived absolutely stinking of noxious chemicals. I had to drive the packaging to the skip wearing a mask and with my windows open it was so bad.

After 3 weeks of trying charcoal bags, baking soda, ground coffee, airing them outside for days etc - nothing helped - there is clearly a manufacturing problem with this product and they have been finished incorrectly with a possibly noxious or even carcinogenic chemicals that caused us throat symptoms and headaches when sleeping next to them. We also have a newborn and so had to remove the bedside tables from our room. The smell is way beyond the usual new furniture smell - it has not faded and seems highly toxic.

I tried to return them but they said I was responsible for packaging them despite them weighing over 20kg each and needing professional grade strength packaging and reinforced cardboard and moulded foam that I would not even know where to source. And then they said I would be responsible for any damage during the return despite them booking the courier. It’s truly baffling that they would try to make their customer responsible for their own courier’s failings. They could choose to insure them with their courier but instead they would rather try to catch out their own customers.

I’m now stuck with over £700 of furniture that I cannot sleep next to because of how horrendous they smell and possibly dangerous to ours and our newborns health, and the company refusing to supply the packaging to return them, or insure them adequately.

Both points are in direct contradiction to the Consumer Rights Act, which says a company cannot cause a consumer inconvenience in a return process nor force them to be responsible for packaging.

Sneaky company with no morals selling low quality and dangerous products that should be avoided at all costs.

We’re really sorry to hear how unhappy you are with your experience, and we do take concerns like this seriously, especially where health and safety are mentioned.

When you first contacted us about the odour, we responded promptly and offered to arrange a collection of the items so they could be returned to us and inspected. As this type of issue cannot be assessed accurately via photos or videos, a physical inspection is a necessary step for us to investigate and proceed with a refund or resolution. This is standard practice, so we can verify the fault and take appropriate action with our manufacturer if needed.

You declined this collection and instead chose to open a chargeback with your bank. Once a chargeback is initiated, the case is handled directly by the bank, and we are unable to proceed with our usual returns process until a decision has been made. This is outside of our control.

Regarding packaging, we understand that returning large items can feel inconvenient. However, items do need to be adequately packaged to prevent damage in transit, as couriers will not accept or safely transport unprotected furniture. This is to ensure that items are returned in a condition suitable for inspection.

That said, our intention was never to make the process difficult; we offered to arrange the collection for you to try and resolve the matter as smoothly as possible.

We do not take lightly any suggestion that our products are unsafe. If the items had been returned to us, we would have prioritised inspecting them and addressing any verified manufacturing issues directly.

We remain committed to resolving issues fairly and within the proper process, and we’re sorry that, in this case, we were unable to move forward due to the chargeback route being taken.

Excellent customer service!

I ordered a 3-seat sofa and unfortunately we were unable to get it up the stairs and elevator in my flat. However, Melissa from customer support was super helpful - they took the sofa back, issued me a refund and I ordered the 2-seat sofa which is perfect :) They were also super quick to reply.

I have had a number of products from Olivia’s - the quality and style are superb. Each piece feels thoughtfully designed for practicality and real style. The delivery dates are clear. I love how the products fit into my home and i feel they fit with my creativity. Subtle decorative touches to standout pieces visitors have commented on the accent chairs regarding design and comfort, I like most that the products feel unique and just add a personality to my home.I have had a number of products and will continue to shop here. They also do good sales!

Questionable Build Quality

Service was good, had a query that was answered promptly. Furniture arrived within timescale.

However, a cabinet door does not fully close as the design would dictate. Possibly because a door is slightly warped. Only 3 stars because of the questionable build and quality control processes.

Incredibly overpriced for low quality products. Expensive marketing and website to cover poor quality. Ordered the Lyon drawers and they look cheap and like fake wood with that plastic sheen on top.

No customer service and damaged and poor quality items, seconds?

I’ve left a review but wanted to update it. The company suggested we contact their customer support team (a misnomer?) about our concerns and we sent pictures and a long explanation. That was 12 March. It’s 4 April and we’ve had no response..Yes, it was 6 weeks after delivery but we’d been on a long holiday. The mirror has large scratches right in the middle (how does that happen, particularly given the amount of padding around it for delivery?). Dutch Bone who made the furniture ( which included two sideboards) says on their site about their craftsmanship. The doors on the cupboard are different thicknesses and sizes! I think craftsmanship isn’t the word. I simply wish I’d never taken advantage of the sale Olivia’s offered.

Nearly two weeks ago they asked me YET AGAIN for my order number. It feels like they’re doing it to present as responding whereas nothing is happening. They simply don’t care about quality products or their customers.
