Before trusting John Berger with your…

Before trusting John Berger with your home energy system, I’d encourage you to look into what happened at his last company.
I was a Sunnova Energy PPA customer. I’m a 100% permanently disabled Navy veteran. Over the course of more than a year, I made multiple documented requests to enroll in Sunnova’s AutoPay system. Each time, their representatives failed to properly set it up. Because I believed autopay was active, I had no idea payments weren’t being drafted. By the time I found out, seven late payment marks had been reported to the credit bureaus.
When I discovered the problem, I paid every balance immediately and began escalating. Sunnova opened four separate cases (Case-16606048, Case-17505293, Case-17791694, and Case-17801130). Their own Issue Resolution Specialist acknowledged in writing that their records showed I had requested autopay. Another representative opened a goodwill letter case and explicitly acknowledged “the damage done to your credit score.” The complaint was escalated to their executive team. A Senior Issue Resolution Specialist was assigned. None of them fixed it. Not one.
The damage was real. My Navy Federal Credit Union refinance application was denied specifically because of the credit score damage caused by Sunnova’s reporting errors. That denial cost me financially in ways I’m still dealing with today.
In my experience, Sunnova’s business model was predatory. Long-term contracts that follow the property, billing systems that conveniently malfunction, and a resolution process designed to exhaust you into silence. I believe elderly homeowners and military families are particularly vulnerable to this kind of arrangement because the contracts are complex, the PPA obligations transfer with the home, and the customer service infrastructure is built to deflect rather than resolve.
John Berger resigned as Sunnova’s CEO in March 2025. Three months later, Sunnova filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy with $8.9 billion in debt, laying off over half its workforce. The company’s assets were sold off. Berger then immediately launched Otovo USA — a company that, by his own description, targets the very customers his old company abandoned.

Customer Service and Communication was very poor

The PV system was installed by a Sub properly and as agreed. However, the dismantled solar thermal unit was not disposed of, which I had expected to be included. A major issue was the communication: after multiple follow-ups, a staff member explicitly asked me to withhold the remaining amount until the issue was clarified. Despite this, I received a payment reminder including a warning about Schufa reporting. I still haven’t received a proper response. Installation was fine, but customer service and communication was very poor.

Consultation was very competent and transparent

The advice from Otovo was very good and the atmosphere was very friendly. Questions about technical and commercial issues as well as the process were answered perfectly and competently. Overall, it made a very transparent and honest impression.
Even after the consultation, the consultant was very easy to contact by email and telephone.

At my wits end.

At my wits end.

Months later, nearly 10 months after installation, and life-threatening issues with the electrical installation have been found. No date to fix. No answer to texts, emails or telephone calls.

Stay away from these guys and shop local. Nice people, but utterly overwhelmed.

Good people in sales

Andreas, the sales manager with whom I dealt, was very professional, knowledgeable, open and friendly. He explained the product and the process to me very clearly in English, and he answered all of my questions satisfactorily. I felt at ease throughout our conversations and in no way felt pressured into making a snap purchase decision. It felt like Andreas' main concern was to ensure that I had the right product for my needs, and not just to make a quick sale for the sake of commission. Overall, although I ultimately didn't purchase a solar electric system from Otovo, I had a very positive experience.

appointments cancelled without explanation

Nice conversation, the guy on the phone took his time to explain everything in detail, we made an appointment for a few days later to go through the offer he would have made.

Then the appointment simply got cancelled, by E-Mail with no explanation whatsoever.

Dont spend the time filling out their forms or replying to their E-Mails, in the end they simply cancel everything without explanation.
