Petplan is generally more expensive but they never penalise you for making claims. So the monthly cost will increase steadily every year, whether you claim or not, but you don't have to stress about the cost suddenly doubling or tripling like you would with most other insurers. Also, I cannot speak for everybody but when we had to make a claim they paid everything out in full, and it was all done through the vet, so we didn't have to stress about providing any other paperwork or information - the vet and Petplan sorted it amongst themselves, which is great, as you don't want to be stressing about bureaucracy while your pet is sick. Petplan made a very stressful and upsetting period in our lives a little bit easier to handle, not to mention the fact that we were able to afford the care for our cat that we would have otherwise struggled to afford. Vets are insanely expensive in London, and that situation was an eye opener, so I am very grateful for Petplan and I wouldn't consider any other pet insurance provider.
Note: this took place in April and May 2025, but it won't let me go back that far in the calendar, so I picked a random date. Since the review is positive I hope that this won't be an issue.
I put in a complaint , trying to put this into a nutshell, because Pet Plan didn't send me my policy renewal documents via email last November 2025- for this year 2026. At the time I had a leak in my bathroom, and so my eye was taken off the ball, with the urgency of the leak. I contacted PetPlan at various times during 2026, for different things, and not one member of their team picked up on this oversight. I was only made aware of it when I made a claim for my older cat's ongoing health issue and asked in this one instance for PetPlan to pay my vets directly. I had to sign a form at the vets for this to happen and on that form was a stipulation that I send them my policy documents for this year.
Well, I looked everywhere for it, I could find others for previous years online ... I thought I was going mad. PetPlan rang me back , when I asked them to send it to me again, thinking something had happened to the email. It turns out, the agent informed me, that they had never sent me my policy by email for this year at all.
Well, you can imagine my huge enbarrassment, explaining this to my new vets that I had joined towards the beginning of this year!!!! There was a bit of a silence after telling them this, during that conversation on the phone with someone on the vets reception. I felt like I was back at school again!
I rang the insurers - PetPlan's - Allianz - this week, who said they hadn't allocated me to a complaints handler yet, after receiving a generalised email, that they needed more time, in guidelines with the Financial Ombudsman , having had the standard first stage time allowance. They would contact me again after 30th November , and if they hadn't reached a decision by then, they would explain why.
I know I am not the only person with a complaint, but, this case is so black and white, they have admitted the issue themselves. I don't know how many case handlers they have working for them, but I have to say, having had other pets in the past, insured by them, with a high reputation for insuring pets , they seem to be going downhill somewhat. I am being the compliant, patient customer, and was good natured on the phone too, but I am exasperated that it has happened at all. An insurance company that forgets to send out another years renewal policy? That is bonkers!
I have had my claim refused, as apparently I have had full claim for Diarrhoea, firstly how can Diarrhoea be a condition it is a symptom of many conditions. The claim should never be entitled Diarrhoea in the first place. He has just been diagnosed with bowle disease, I have never claimed for this condition. He was previously treated for tummy bug all treatment was related to his tummy. The idea of calling it Diarrhoea and then refusing to pay out on any condition that may cause diarrhoea is absolutely ridiculous. I have been with Pet Plan for years all my animals have been insured by them, I have recommended to many people I won't be doing it again. If this can't be solved I will take the matter further . Starting with social media, informing all the people I recommended how I have been treated .
They didnt pay us back for a claim we made. We have paid into that insurance for 6 years and never claimed before. You would be better off putting the money monthly into a savings account for when you need it

Our Cat has been under a petplan policy since we adopted him from cats protection. He started to have a behavioural problem we spoke to our vet to confirm and he suggested a behaviourist.
We put in a claim as our policy specifically mentions they cover behaviourists. We filled out the forms for the behaviourist to fill out the forms and sent them in.
We have now been in a constant battle since the 11th of August to get what should be a simple matter sorted.
We have sent previous vets info, current vets info. Care records from both vets. A time line, had them speak to the vets. Get asked for all the same info again, been asked to give a time line as he may of been out of policy (he never has been!)
At this point it seems like they are just trying to make you give up as it feels like a pointless endeavour. We will most likely not be renewing the policy!

Very disappointed with Petplan. My dental claim was rejected despite veterinary records showing a normal oral examination before the issue was identified. The rejection was based on a gap between vet appointments, and I don’t believe the decision fairly reflects the policy wording or the evidence. I have submitted a formal complaint.
I expected much better from a pet insurance provider. Would not recommend based on my experience.

Claim has been ongoing for over 3 weeks!! sent information and it was never received. Staff always make you feel like a problem when you call and are not friendly. No one knows what is going on and my claim is still ongoing and has been over 3 weeks. I’m likely not to renew both of my pets after this experience. Petplan used to be the go to, after my first claim a while back on my dog Freddie I couldn’t speak highly enough. My current experience with my other dog is nothing short of awful, the length of time being taken on such a simple claim ( over 3 weeks) has meant I’m not being able to afford to continue his treatment and I’ve had to cancel a well needed surgery! petplan have put me in financial detriment and my dog is also suffering due to the delay. I will not be renewing and no longer recommending to family and friends.

Worst experience ever, all what I’m asking is clarity they still processing claim from 2 months .
They can’t even answer one question when I’m gonna get result

I was previously insured with another pet insurance provider, but I recently switched to Petplan specifically because their policy includes dental treatment coverage.
However, my very first claim was declined, with Petplan stating: "Your pre-authorisation request for dental treatment has been declined as no veterinary dental examination has been carried out within the last two years."
My cat underwent a dental assessment just a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, his dental condition deteriorated rapidly due to the sudden development of an abscess, resulting in the extraction of several teeth. Despite this, Petplan has refused to cover any of the treatment costs.
What I find particularly frustrating is that the policy states that a dental assessment must have been carried out within the last 12 months. Nowhere does it clearly specify that a dental examination must have been conducted within the previous two years.
This discrepancy makes the rejection seem unjustified and raises serious concerns about the transparency of the policy's terms and conditions. It feels as though Petplan is using an unclear requirement as an excuse to avoid paying a legitimate claim, leaving us to face substantial and unexpected veterinary bills.
I find this situation extremely disappointing and unfair, particularly as dental coverage was one of the main reasons I chose to switch to Petplan.
I would like Petplan to provide a clear explanation of the grounds for rejecting my claim, identify the specific policy clause supporting the two-year requirement, and reconsider its decision in light of the dental assessment my cat recently received.

My lab is 13 years old, I have been with Petplan since his birth and paid a total of over 22 k during his lifetime in monthly payments to those scammers.
Dear dog lover, save your money in a separate account for hard times or ask a financial adviser for help in investing your money rather than give it away for free to Pet Plan who is using all of us to make huge profits !!Do not get fooled by these greedy people and their advertising techniques for they know how much we love our pets and they prey on this love .

⭐ 1 Star – Extremely stressful experience. I would not recommend Petplan.
My experience with Petplan has been absolutely appalling, and I have completely lost trust in this insurance company.
My dog Rose had mastitis and postpartum metritis in January 2026, before my policy began in February. She subsequently developed pyometra in July and required emergency surgery in August. What followed has been an exhausting and incredibly stressful claims process.
I have repeatedly been asked to provide medical records and information that I had already submitted. Instead of feeling like my claim was being handled efficiently, I felt as though I was constantly going around in circles, chasing answers and having to repeat myself. The lack of clear communication and the ongoing uncertainty have caused me unnecessary stress at an already worrying time.
When you pay for pet insurance, you do so expecting support when your beloved pet becomes seriously ill. You do not expect to spend so much time chasing the insurer and repeatedly dealing with the same requests. I understand that claims need to be assessed, but I expect that process to be organised, transparent and fair.
I was so dissatisfied with the way everything was handled that I submitted a formal complaint on 13 September 2026. It is incredibly disappointing to feel that you have to fight so hard just to have your concerns addressed.
In my opinion, the whole experience has left me feeling misled and let down by a company I trusted to protect my dog. I have reached the point where I no longer feel comfortable continuing to pay for a policy with Petplan because my confidence in them has been severely damaged.
Pet insurance is supposed to provide peace of mind during frightening situations, not add another layer of stress and frustration. I would strongly encourage other pet owners to consider carefully whether this is the experience they want to risk when choosing an insurer.
I would never have expected to be left feeling this way about a company I was paying to help protect my beloved dog. My experience has been exhausting, disappointing and completely unacceptable to me.

So my dog had a cough for one day when arriving with us
Totally fine after this then about 16 days later and 18 days before we had the claim in and he got poorly and they are trying not to disguinsh a cough due to change of enviorment and use the day one cough as the same thing which it was not . Complaint is going in really as thats a big con! Using the 14 day period saying those are two of the same things when he was fine after first day .
Will be taking matters further

Petplan had already paid out on one significant claim for our cat, Elsa, in 2023. In September 2026, Elsa suddenly became ill and was referred to a veterinary hospital in Birmingham. After a £2000 CT scan, she was diagnosed with a terminal cancer that affected her lungs and spine, and we felt we had no option but to put her to sleep immediately. Petplan were excellent and paid the full claim, along with a sympathetic email. When we do get a new cat next year, we will absolutely use Petplan again.

Took out petplan whole of life cover when I purchased my dog. Even though it was a major cost for me being a single parent with other mitigating circumstances. Have paid duly even though the price has quadrupled sice taking the policy out and if you miss a payment you lose the whole of life cover. I have put in a small claim by comparison, and have been rejected due to not following the rules they keep changing so cover gets less and less. Woul not recommended. You would be better opening an account and putting a monthly sum in ready for when you need it

Was with petplan for over 10 years with my cats. My cat went missing and I was not given paperwork from the microchip company or vets when reported. Due to this I was not reimbursed for the £1k I spent trying to find her. They also did not refund me the £43 a month I was paying whilst they spent several months sending me emails requesting information I had previously corrected or provided on multiple phone calls and emails with them. Would not recommend.

I cannot recommend petplan enough, for 13 years they have paid every claim we've ever had to make for our dog. Our vets send the claims and petplan send payment straight to the vets so it's easier. We don't have to keep ringing, that way we can concentrate on getting our boy the best care. Cancer, dermatitis, infections and dental cleaning all covered. Yes they are one of the more expensive plans BUT i strongly believe if we had of gone with a cheaper company then they would not have covered as much. Our boy recently passed away and they were incredible, i didn't realise they paid for the euthanasia so that was a weight lifted. Strongly recommend

It is with heavy heart that I have had to cancel my PetPlan policy for my 2 dogs.
I was mis sold the policy when it was started:- I wanted a policy that covered all dental work. After conversation with a customer service advisor today, it became clear that one of my pets would never have been covered due to previous dental work carried out by the Dogs Trust, who I got the dogs from several years ago. I have paid 4 years worth for the policy and the company clearly knew they would not pay out. This fraud needs to be highlighted to help others avoid this company.
In my view- DO NOT USE PETPLAN.

Really disappointed with Pet Plan and their restricted dental policy. Feel really abandoned following my dog's dental and the fact that Pet Plan refuse to cover, despite me checking with them pre-surgery and being assured that this dental would be covered. Out of pocket and will not renew with Pet Plan.

This review is for existing and potential customers - I am not a customer myself.
I am writing this because I am still receiving mail for a previous occupant of my house (I do not have a forwarding address) and despite returning the mail with information that their client no longer lives here and has not done so for over 11 years, they still write each year.
It is my strong suspicion that they do this because they are taking pet insurance money annually even though it is unlikely that the pet is still alive - by chasing the correct whereabouts of their client via mobile or email it would mean verification that payments are no longer warranted.
Although I do have two pets I am really pleased that I do not use PetPlan. Their treatment of this client is awful, despite being told for 11 years that she no longer lives at the address they have. This uncaring company has done absolutely nothing to connect with her.
