Dear Elle Fig,

My name is Brian Kaldenberg. I am the owner of ProofreadingPal.

Many of the complaints and requests you have made to our customer service department since receiving your edited dissertation have bordered on the line of academic dishonesty. You are aspiring to get your PsyD and should know better than to make requests that many would see as academically dishonest.

Furthermore, the harassing nature of your emails and lack of professionalism shown to our customer service representatives have been disappointing. This type of behavior would be frowned upon by those in the neuropsychology field. Your threats reflect poorly on both the California Psychological Association and Alliant International University.

1. We explained the scope of our service to you on March 30 and quoted you over the phone for a 5-day turnaround. Every communication from that point onward, including an email quote followed by an invoice, included a 5-day turnaround from receipt of payment. You paid your invoice at 2:25 p.m. on 4/1/24, and we started work immediately thereafter. We completed and returned your dissertation to you in slightly less than 4 days, at 1:46 p.m. on 4/5/24, an entire day before our quoted 5-day deadline.

2. We explained in detail over the phone, via our email quote, and via our invoice that our service includes the following: “The editor will proofread your dissertation for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization errors. The editor will edit your dissertation for sentence structure, clarity, and consistency of APA style and your university-specific formatting guidelines. Finally, the editor will make helpful comments and suggestions.” We have you on record agreeing that this is exactly the type of service you were looking for. At no point did we ever agree that you would receive your dissertation back without any further work required on your end.

3. Your proofreader made thousands of edits to fix formatting errors, correct sentence structure errors, and turn sentence fragments into complete sentences. At no point did we claim we would function as a content writer for your dissertation; at no point did we claim we would check the factual accuracy of your content; at no point did we claim we would expand upon your incomplete ideas to add context. These are the types of things you have complained to customer service that you did not receive. These sorts of requests would require outside research and subject matter expertise, which is beyond the scope of our service, and would certainly cross the line into academic dishonesty.

4. Your proofreader made 3,619 insertions, 3,730 deletions, 11 moves, 2,225 formatting changes, and 208 comments. This comes to a total of 9,793 revisions. This, in turn, comes out to 1 edit every 2.65 words. The proofreader provided multiple days’ worth of valuable work, correcting thousands of errors in your document.

5. We did format your dissertation, from front to end, in accordance with Alliant International University’s dissertation style guide as well as in accordance with APA 7 style. We completed an internal investigation and did not find two different fonts in your abstract. We asked you to provide specific examples of your claims, and you’ve yet to provide us with even a single piece of evidence to support the claims in your review.

6. We have promptly responded to all of your phone calls and emails.

We offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee, which is explained in detail on our website. We would be happy to continue to investigate any further claims or requests you may have as long as you are able to provide specific examples to support your claims and as long as your requests are within the scope of our service and are not academically dishonest in nature.

First, we want to assure you that two highly skilled, native English-speaking proofreaders proofread and edited your document. The first proofreader made more edits than the second proofreader, but this is to be expected because the first proofreader corrects the majority of errors before the second proofreader receives the document.

Prior to you leaving this review, we reached out via email to explain our process for editing PDFs and ensure you were viewing the edits using the correct software. An explanation of how we edit PDFs and how to correctly view the edits is also included on the FAQ page on our website.

When a document is in PDF, we use Adobe Reader’s editing tools to simulate Track Changes and also write out each revision in the pop-up note associated with each correction. We also include comments using the comment function. PDFs are essentially images of document pages and cannot be edited directly. The expectation is that the author will use our marked-up PDF as a reference when making edits to their master copy of the document in the software used to create the document.

For Microsoft Word documents, we return two versions of your completed document to you. The first, marked “showing markup,” is a complete record of every change we made to your document using the track changes feature. The second, marked “all changes accepted,” is a clean version for your convenience, with those changes implemented and only comments remaining.

Part of the editing process is the proofreaders leaving helpful comments and suggestions. Comments are often left when the proofreaders want to point out a change they have made or if they want to suggest a change they feel they do not have the full authority to make and, therefore, want to leave it up to you.
